Book The Quest for Drug Control

Download or read book The Quest for Drug Control written by David F. Musto and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1960 and 1980 various administrations attempted to deal with a rising tide of illicit drug use that was unprecedented in U.S. history. This valuable book provides a close look at the politics and bureaucracy of drug control policy during those years, showing how they changed during the presidencies of Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter and how much current federal drug-control policies owe to those earlier efforts. David F. Musto, M.D., and Pamela Korsmeyer base their analysis on a unique collection of 5,000 pages of White House documents from the period, all of which are included on a searchable CD-ROM that accompanies the book. These documents reveal the intense debates that took place over drug policy. They show, for example, that staffers and cabinet officers who were charged with narcotics policy were often influenced by the cultural currents of their times, and when the public reacted in an extreme fashion to rising drug use, officials were disinclined to adopt modified policies that might have been more realistic. Musto and Korsmeyer’s investigation into the decision-making processes that shaped past drug control efforts in the United States provides essential background as creative approaches to the drug problem are sought for the future.

Book Assassin of Youth

Download or read book Assassin of Youth written by Alexandra Chasin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Assassin of Youth" is a lyrical, digressive, funny, and ultimately riveting quasi-biography of a little known man: Harry J. Anslinger, the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. The J. Edgar Hoover of pot busts, Anslinger played a major role in the creation of America s prohibitionist drug policy and the racist and ineffective carceral state that resulted. But Anslinger himself was dull, ordinary, a square. How then does Alexandra Chasin write his biography? Her treatment of Anslinger, his times, and the mentalities that arose and prevailed around and through him is part cultural history, part lyrical meditation, and only part biography. Each of her short chapters is anchored in a historical document a piece of legislation, a court decision, snatches of popular literature and the chapters engage with the voices, presumptions, insights, and blind spots of those documents to illuminate Anslinger and his world. "Assassin of Youth" is as riotous and loose a history of drug laws as can be imagined and yet, it is rooted in very close attention to language and context. Today, even as marijuana is slowly being legalized, we have not yet fully reckoned with the haze of influences and mentalities that have enabled our long embrace of severe punishments for drug possession and use. Alexandra Chasin here shows us the deep, twisted roots of our love and hatred of drugs of all sorts."

Book The Oxford Handbook of Global Drug History

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Global Drug History written by Paul Gootenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This essay reveals how a global "New Drug History" has evolved over the past three decades, along with its latest thematic trends and possible next directions. Scholars have long studied drugs, but only in the 1990s did serious archival and global study of what are now illicit drugs emerge, largely from the influence of the anthropology of drugs on history. A series of key interdisciplinary influences are now in play beyond anthropology, among them, commodity and consumption studies, sociology, medical history, cultural studies, and transnational history. Scholars connect drugs and their changing political or cultural status to larger contexts and epochal events such as wars, empires, capitalism, modernization, or globalizing processes. As the field expands in scope, it may shift deeper into non-western perspectives, a fluid historical definition of drugs; environmental concerns; and research on cannabis and opiates sparked by their current transformations or crises"--

Book excerpt: A comprehensive look at the beginnings of the current drug problems in the United States Federal Drug Control: The Evolution of Policy and Practice presents an overview of the key issues and key individuals responsible for the creation of the federal government’s efforts to control illegal drugs in the United States, from 1875-2001. The book focuses special attention on federal legislation that constructed the federal drug regulatory machinery and the Supreme Court cases that interpreted these laws and their implementation. An esteemed panel of scholars, including co-editor Joseph Spillane, author of Cocaine: From Medical Marvel to Modern Menace, and William B. McAllister, author of Drug Diplomacy in the Twentieth Century: An International History, traces the internal tensions between factions favoring medicalization and criminalization throughout the 20th century, examining the difficult choices that continue to be made in this ongoing debate. The central question in the government’s response to the crisis of illicit drugs in the United States has remained the same for more than 125 years: Should the government rely on educational and treatment programs or turn to the criminal justice system for answers? Federal Drug Control examines the historic turning points of the debate, including the 19th Century origins of the controversy, legislation and subsequent Supreme Court decisions in the 20th Century, international attempts at drug control agreements, and the emergence of new illicit drugs. The book also looks at the influential figures of the debate, including Levi Nutt, Lawrence Kolb, Richard Pearson Hobson, A.G. DuMez, and Harry J. Anslinger who ran the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN) for more than 30 years. Federal Drug Control examines: the history of cocaine use in the 20th Century the history of marijuana use in the 20th Century the advent of psychotropic drugs in the 1960s the origins of the Harrison Narcotic Act the federal government’s efforts to limit the pharmacy profession’s control over prescription drugs and much more! Federal Drug Control: The Evolution of Policy and Practice is an essential resource for criminologists, historians, social historians, sociologists, anthropologists, public policymakers, academics, and anyone interested in the broad issues involved in how the federal government deals with the problem of illicit drugs in the United States.

Book Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment

Download or read book Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment written by Committee on Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-02-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly three decades, methadone hydrochloride has been the primary means of treating opiate addiction. Today, about 115,000 people receive such treatment, and thousands more have benefited from it in the past. Even though methadone's effectiveness has been well established, its use remains controversial, a fact reflected by the extensive regulation of its manufacturing, labeling, distribution, and use. The Food and Drug Administration regulates the safety and effectiveness of methadone, as it does for all drugs, and the Drug Enforcement Administration regulates it as a controlled substance. However, methadone is also subjected to a unique additional tier of regulation that prescribes how and under what circumstances it may be used to treat opiate addiction. Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment examines current Department of Health and Human Services standards for narcotic addiction treatment and the regulation of methadone treatment programs pursuant to those standards. The book includes an evaluation of the effect of federal regulations on the provision of methadone treatment services and an exploration of options for modifying the regulations to allow optimal clinical practice. The volume also includes an assessment of alternatives to the existing regulations.
