Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Gospel of John One of the most eminent Biblical scholars, not alone of our country, but of our age, in imparting some of the impressions derived from a sojourn in Europe, says: "To the American Christian who travels on this part of the Continent, Tholuck is undoubtedly the most interesting person whose acquaintance he will make. He possesses a greater personal influence and reputation than any other theologian in Germany." Prof. Park in his Sketch of the Life and Character of Tholuck, makes these remarks: "As a Commentator he has many excellencies. This would be anticipated from the fact that his reading has been so various, and his memory is so retentive; from his almost unequaled facility in acquiring language, and his peculiar intimacy with the Hebrew and its cognate tongues. He is able to write and converse in a great variety of languages, as the English, Italian, Dutch, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Arabic, Persian and others. He is, of course, qualified to illustrate the sacred texts by a multiplicity of references; and he quotes with peculiar pertinence and effect from the Oriental, and especially from the Rabbinical writings. For a single specimen, read his comment on John vii. 37-39. The classical quotations, too, in his Commentaries, are eminently valuable." Kaufman observes in the preface to his translation of the fourth edition of Tholuck's John: "Nothing is perhaps more wanted in the theological domain than a good Commentary on the Gospels. On this part of the Bible our language affords the student little that is valuable in a critical and doctrinal view. - In commenting on St. John particularly - the Plato of the inspired circle - it requires a mind of a peculiar order. This mind Tholuck possesses: a happy combination of deep and meditative thought with a Christian heart; a quick apprehension, a glowing imagination, an accurate acquaintance with language, and a nice perception of its force, together with a clear insight into the spiritual nature of man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. John: The Authorised Version With Introduction and Notes In examining the indirect evidence which the fourth Gospel furnishes as to its authorship, it will be most convenient, as well as most satisfactory, to consider the available materials in relation to successive questions which become more and more definite as we proceed. How far then can we infer from the book itself, with more or less certainty, that the author was, or was not, a Jew, a Jew of Palestine, an eye-witness, an Apostle, and, last of all, St John, the son Of Zebedee? Book A Commentary on the Gospel by St John Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Commentary on the Gospel by St John Classic Reprint written by George A. McLaughlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Gospel by St. John It may be objected that the author sees Holiness everywheresin the Scriptures because he is determined to see it there. In reply we would say that doubtless the objector may not see it there, because he does not wish to see it. The scribes and Pharisees, who were certainly as well acquainted with the text of the Old Testament as any of the modern divines or scholars, did not recognize the portraits of Jesus of Nazareth in those writings at all. We would say still further that the great proof of the inspiration of the Scriptures is in the power and privilege of proving them true by experience, if we come candidly to Jesus seeking to know and do his will. The doctrines of the new birth and the witness of the Spirit, as taught in the Scriptures, have been proved true again and again in human lives. And the testimonies to this effect are accepted in the Church to-day. The doctrine of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, a work subsequent to conversion, whereby the heart is cleansed from all Sin, is just as clearly testified to by the saints from all the denominations, men and women of sober judg ment, scholarly wisdom and consistent lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to St. John: Authorized Version, With Introduction and Notes If, now, we approach the matter of authorship with clear minds, unpossessed by prejudice in favour of any particular theory, and at the same time confident that an ordinarily simple method of investigation will suffice for the attain ment of a definite result, what course shall we adopt? The first point to be settled, surely, is the account which the book gives of itself. What does it say or imply concerning the writer from whose pen it came? That inquiry is the obvious starting-point, and to that inquiry we will now give the brief reply which is all it needs. His mother Salome appears to have been a pious woman, because she attached herself at a later date with so much love to Jesus - It is likewise pro bable that she had occupied herself with the hopes respect ing a Messiah, Matt. From which account it also ap pears, that she cherished a strong affection for her children. Such a mother must necessarily have been well qualified to develops early in her children a pious disposition; and this may have been fostered by the peculiar character of a haber man's life. John must often have awoke during the silent nights, near the water, in a delightful part of the country, resembling the environs of the lake of Geneva, (bitter, Erd kunde, Th. II. P. When John, the Baptist, appeared, and announced every where the near advent of the kingdom of God, it was natural that our John, prompted by a pious desire, should join himself to this powerful herald of Christ. Besides, according to the uncertain tradition of Theophylact, he is said to have beeri a nephew of the father of the Baptist, by which his joining the latter would be still more easily ex. Plained. The Baptist described in prophetic vision the sub lime destination of Jesus; from himself as preparatory mes senger, he directed his hearers to Him who was the true light of the world. The docile disciples now turned to Jesus; among them were Andrew and John; the latter immediately, at the first conversation, felt so greatly interested, that he remained with the Messiah, whom he had at length found, fi'om the fourth hour in the afternoon until night. N otwith standing, Jesus did not yet attach him permanently to his society. It belonged to the divine wisdom which character ized the teaching of the Redeemer, that he never imposed more on the mind than it'was just able to bear. He threw a germ into the soul, and left this to develops itself gradually. This likewise distinguished Christ so greatly from the t'each er, who, tilled with mere human enthusiasm, is desirous of. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel, Epistles, and Revelation of St. John: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes The application of this principle to the present case seems to follow naturally from what has already been said. St. John's work is a gospel: accordingly, like the other gospels, it will be made up of the the Acts and Sayings of Jesus. But its prologue has set forth a very special pur pose for the narrative the support of a theological position. In accordance with this we find, as a fact, that the 'acts of Jesus become in St. John's narrative 'signs, ' and the 'sayings' are all of the nature of 'witness.' From this point of view the work falls into natural divisions: seven incidents constitute the Earlier Signs and Witness of Jesus, seven more his Signs and Witness to the Jews; four divisions comprise the Signs and Witness among his own Disciples, and the three phases of the final Passion and Resurrection history may again be treated as Signs and Witness. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Gospel of St. John, Vol. 2 We begin here with the investigation of the question whether the sinner of Luke vii., Mary Magdalene, and Mary the sister of Lazarus, were different persons, or only different designations of the same person. The result of this inquiry is of great importance in the explanation of the present section. The more ancient material for its solution Deyling gives in his Observ. Sac. iii. 291 seq. Clemens Alexander. assumes only one anointing, which he ascribes to the woman who was a sinner. Tertullian says that the sinner, by the washing of Christ's feet, presignified and presymbolized His burial, and therefore identifies her with the sister of Lazarus. Origen (Tract. 35 in Matt.) remarks: "Many think that the four Evangelists have written concerning one and the same woman." He himself declares against this opinion, though it was the current one of his time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book An Illustrated Commentary on the Gospel According to St John written by Lyman Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated Commentary on the Gospel According to St. John: For Family Use and Reference, and for the Great Body of Christian Workers of All Denominations The Apostle John. The Apostle John was probably a native, certainly a resident, of Galilee. His mother, Salome, * early became a follower of Jesus. She was probably one Of the women Of Galilee who accompanied him on his mission ary tours, and ministered to him of their sub stancet She was with him on his last journey to Jerusalem, and during the passion week, and was one of those women who were last at the cross and first at the sepulchre.1 Like the other followers of Jesus, she anticipated the establish ment Of a temporal kingdom, was ambitious for her sons James and John, and made an applica tion for special favors for them when the king dom should be established. From a comparison of Matt.' 27 56 with John 19 25, it would appear that she was own sister to the Virgin Mary, in which case John was own cousin to Jesus. This Opinion is not accepted by all critics, but I believe it to be the correct one. See note on John 19 25. John's father, Zebe dee, was a well-to-do fisherman on the shores Of the sea of Galilee. Of him we know very little. He was sufficiently prosperous to own several boats and to hire men to work for him. Tradi tion makes him of noble birth; and this tradition is perhaps confirmed by the fact that John had some acquaintance with the high-priest. John has been characterized by those critics who wish to make out that his character is in consistent with the idea Oi his authorship Of the Fourth Gospel, as ignorant and unlettered, on the authority of Acts 4 13, and as a vehement and bigoted Jew on the authority of Galatians, chap. II, and Of the peculiar Hebraic tone Of the Book of Revelation. Both characterizations are quite gratuitous assumptions. In connection with every Jewish synagogue was a parochial school, in which the pupils were taught reading, writ ing, and the rudiments Of such natural sciences as were then in existence. The Jewish children of the common people were far better educated than those of Greece or Rome. There is every reason to believe that John received this com mon education of the age and community in Which he lived, and there is absolutely no reason whatever to suppose the contrary. It was only by the Pharisees that John was considered as ignorant and unlettered, and they affixed the same stigma upon Jesus himself. To the Phar isees the only learning worth the name was learning in the traditional lore of the church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
