Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistle of Paul to the Romans Biblical science has progressed rapidly during the past few years, but the reader still lacks a brief, com prehensive commentary that shall extend to him in usable form material now at the disposition of the student. It is hoped that in this series the needs of intelligent Sunday School teachers have been met, as well as those of clergymen and lay readers, and that in Scope, purpose, and loyalty to the Scriptures as a foundation of Christian thought and life, its volumes will stimulate the intelligent use of the Bible in the home and the school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans This Commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Romans was written at the request of the Board of Publication whose imprint it bears. It was the desire of the board, as expressed by Dr. W. J. Darby, that I should base my work on the King James version of the epistle, and that it should little exceed a hundred thousand words, being only a handy commentary intended chiefly for those readers who, in all Churches, will ever be the majority. And yet it is hoped that the volume may not be without value to many ministers of the gospel, who may not often have opportunity to study those works which deal at greater length with questions of critical detail. Not only, however, was the previous intellectual prepara tion on the part of the reader for commentary study to be taken into consideration, but his purse as well; for if the book had been much larger it would also have cost much more, and hence while it might have done a greater good to the few, it would have done less to the many. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans Coleridge calls the Epistle to the Romans the profoundest book in existence. Chrysostom had it read to him twice a week. Luther, in his famous preface, says This Epistle is the chief book of the New Testa ment, the purest gospel. It deserves not only to be known word for word by every Christian, but to be the subject of his meditation day by day, the daily bread of his soul. The more time one Spends on it, the more precious it becomes and the better it appears. Melanchthon, in order to make it perfectly his own, copied it twice with his own hand. It is the book which he expounded most frequently in his lectures. The Reforma tion was undoubtedly the work of the Epistle to the Romans, as well as of that to the Galatians; and the probability is that every great Spiritual revival in the church will be connected as effect and cause with a deeper understanding of this book. This observation unquestionably applies to the various religious awakenings which have successively marked the course of our century. The exposition of such a book is capable of boundless progress. In studying the Epistle to the Romans we feel ourselves at every word face to face with the unfathomable. Our experience is somewhat analogous to what we feel when contemplating the great masterpieces of mediaeval archi tecture, such, for example, as the Cathedral of Milan. We do not know which to admire most, the majesty of the whole or the finish of the details, and every look makes the discovery of some new perfection. And yet the excellence of the book with which we are about to be occupied should by no means discourage the expositor; it is much rather fitted to stimulate him. What book of the New Testament, says Meyer, in his preface to the fifth edition of his commentary, less entitles the expositor to spare his pains than this, the greatest and richest of all the apostolic works? Only it must not be imagined that to master its meaning nothing more is needed than the philological analysis of the text, or even the theological study of the contents. The true understanding of this masterpiece of the apostolic mind is reserved for those who approach it with the heart de scribed by Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount, the heart hungering and thirsting after righteousness. For what is the Epistle to the Romans 2 The offer of the righteousness of God to the man who finds himself stripped by the law of his own righteousness (i. To understand such a book we must yield ourselves to the current of the intention under which it was dic tated. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans This is the second circumstance in the providential prepara tion of the apostle for his work, which is worthy of notice. As Luther was educated in a Roman Catholic seminary, and tho roughly instructed in the scholastic theology of which he was to be the great opposer, so the apostle Paul was initiated into all the doctrines and modes of reasoning of the Jews, with whom his principal controversy was to be carried on. The early adversaries of the gospel were all Jews. Even in the heathen cities they were so numerous, that it was through them and their proselytes that the church in such places was founded. We find, therefore, that in almost all his epistles, the apostle contends with Jewish errorists, the corrupters of the gospel, by means of Jewish doctrines. Paul, the most extensively useful of all the apostles, was thus a thoroughly educated man; a man educated with a special View to the work which he was called to perform. We find, therefore, in this, as in most similar cases, that God efi'ects his purposes by these instruments which he has, in the ordinary course of his providence, specially fitted for their accomplishment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans Of commentaries published since the first appearance of this work in 1877, I may mention that of Godet, published in 1879, '80, marked by keen insight into the apostle's meaning and great charm of style, but not always reliable in grammatical and critical details and that of Oltramare, published in 1881, '82, careful and scholarly, especially in grammar, but, as I think, less in harmony with the thought of Paul. These works we owe to French Switzerland, their writers having been professors at Lausanne and Geneva respectively. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1 Sacred criticism, which prepares for the exposition of the books of the Bible, has for its object to elucidate the various questions relating to their origin; and of those questions there are always some which can only be resolved with the help of the exegesis itself. The problem of the composition of the Epistle to the Romans includes several questions of this kind. We could not answer them in this introduction without anticipating the work of exegesis. It will be better, therefore, to defer the final solution of them to the con cluding chapter of the commentary. But there are others the solution of which is perfectly obvious, either from the simple reading of the Epistle, or from certain facts established by church history. It cannot be other than advantageous to the exposition to gather together here the results presented by these two sources, which are fitted to shed light on the origin of our Epistle. It will afford an opportunity at the same time of explaining the different views on the subject which have arisen in the course of ages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Romans: With an Introduction, on the Life, Times, Writings and Character of Paul Both of Paul's parents were of the seed of Jacob. 80 that phrase, a Hebrew of the Hebrews, clearly teaches. Like king Saul, our apostle was of the tribe of Benjamin. He was a native of Tarsus, in Cilicia, no mean city. To all its freemen Augus tus had given the freedom of Roman citizens, because of their fidelity to his interests. The time of Paul's birth is uncertain. From something said by Chrysostom, in one of his homilies, some have inferred that Paul was born two years before our Lord. But this is pretty certainly a mistake; for he was still a young man at Stephen's martyrdom, which occurred certainly as late as A. D. 33. And a man from thirty-five to thirty-seven years old would not be so spoken of. It is therefore highly probable that Paul was considerably younger than Jesus of Nazareth.
