Book Questions on the De Anima of Aristotle

Download or read book Questions on the De Anima of Aristotle written by Synan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text of Oxford "Questions" on Aristotle's De Anima, assembled before 1306, conveys a number of philosophical positions for which modern scholars often depend upon theologians. The single manuscript in which this series has been found is a collection of texts useful for students in Arts. A number of the authors represented, including Adam Burley, are known solely through this collection; others, including Walter Burley and Richard of Campsall, would make their reputations later as theologians. Adam, Master in Arts, and Walter, a Bachelor, here dealt with strongly controverted issues from a rigorously "philosophical" perspective; the 'unity of intellect' and human freedom of choice are debated without reference to Church or Bible. Albert, Henry of Ghent, and Giles of Rome are the sole scholastic masters whose arguments are invoked.

Book Avicenna s De Anima in the Latin West

Download or read book Avicenna s De Anima in the Latin West written by Dag Nikolaus Hasse and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 12th century the "Book of the Soul" by the philosopher Avicenna was translated from Arabic into Latin. It had an immense success among scholastic writers and deeply influenced the structure and content of many psychological works of the Middle Ages. The reception of Avicenna's book is the story of cultural contact at an imipressively high intellectural level. The present volume investigates this successful reception using two approaches. The first is chronological, tracing the stages by which Avicenna's work was accepted and adapted by Latin scholars. The second is doctrinal, analyzing the fortunes of key doctrines. The sense of the original Arabic text of Avicenna is kept in mind throughout and the degree to which his original Latin interpreters succeeded in conveying it is evaluated.

Book The Embodied Soul

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marek Gensler
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2022-06-01
  • ISBN : 3030994538
  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book The Embodied Soul written by Marek Gensler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of papers devoted to the problems of body, mind and soul in medieval Europe between 1200 and 1420. Modern discussions of the mind-body relationship seldom look back into the past further than the psycho-somatic dualism of Descartes which started the mechanistic approach in biology and medicine. The authors of the volume go beyond that fault line to investigate the tradition of medieval natural philosophy and its ancient sources and analyze the issues forming a borderland between physiology and psychology. They also demonstrate that the medieval tradition was rich and diverse for it offered a wide variety of the discussed problems as well as the methodological approaches. This volume is the first attempt to cover a diversity of topics and methods employed in the medieval debates on body, mind and soul as well as their interrelationships. The Embodied Soul is a must-have for all those interested in puzzling dilemmas of how a living organism functions and how its inner life can be explained as well as for all those interested in the history of thought in general. Book Encounters with Aristotelian Philosophy of Mind

Download or read book Encounters with Aristotelian Philosophy of Mind written by Pavel Gregoric and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays engages with several topics in Aristotle’s philosophy of mind, some well-known and hotly debated, some new and yet to be explored. The contributors analyze Aristotle’s arguments and present their cases in ways that invite contemporary philosophers of mind to consider the potentials—and pitfalls—of an Aristotelian philosophy of mind. The volume brings together an international group of renowned Aristotelian scholars as well as rising stars to cover five main themes: method in the philosophy of mind, sense perception, mental representation, intellect, and the metaphysics of mind. The papers collected in this volume, with their choice of topics and quality of exposition, show why Aristotle is a philosopher of mind to be studied and reckoned with in contemporary discussions. Encounters with Aristotelian Philosophy of Mind will be of interest to scholars and advanced students of ancient philosophy and philosophy of mind.
