Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Twelve Prophets, Vol. 2 of 2: Commonly Called the Minor The necessity of including within one volume so many prophets, scattered over more than three centuries, and each of them requiring a separate introduction, has reduced the space available for the practical application of their teaching to modern life. But this is the less to be regretted, that the contents of the nine books before us are not so applicable to our own day, as we have found their greater predecessors to be. On the other hand, however, they form a more varied introduction to Old Testament Criticism, while, by the long range of time which they cover, and the many stages of religion to which they belong, they afford a wider view of the development of prophecy. Let us look for a little at these two points. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Minor Prophets, Vol. 2: With a Commentary Explanatory and Practical, and Introductions to the Several Books; Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi Micah, according to the title which he prefixed to his prophecy, was called to the prophetic o ice somewhat later than Isaiah. His ministry began later, and ended earlier. For Uzziah, in whose reign Isaiah began to prophesy, was dead before Micah was called to his office and Micah probably was called away early in the reign of Hezekiah, where as some of the chief public acts of Isaiah's ministry fell in the 17th and 18th years of the reign of Hezekiah. Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, had doubtless been withdrawn to their rest. Hosea alone, in grey-haired might, was still protesting in vain against the deepening corruptions of Israel. The contents of Micah's prophecy and his relation to Isaiah agree with the inscription. His prophecy has indications of the times of J otham, perhaps also of those of Ahaz; one signal prophecy, we know historically, was uttered in the reign of Hezekiah. Book The Twelve Minor Prophets Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Twelve Minor Prophets Classic Reprint written by Conrad von Orelli and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twelve Minor Prophets The order of the writings in LXX is not the same as in the Hebrew canon. Hebrew: 1. Hosea; 2. Joel; 3. Amos; 4. Obadiah; 5. Jonah; 6. Micah. LXX: 1. Hosea; 2. Amos; 3. Micah; 4. Joel; 5. Obadiah; 6. Jonah. Both: 7. Nahum; 8. Habakkuk; 9. Zephaniah; 10. Haggai; 11. Zechariah; 12. Malachi. The first arrangement seems more original; yet neither the one nor the other is of importance for determining the date of these writings, as in both, while the chronological element plainly appears towards the end (Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi), the question of time in the other books does not seem to have been so present to the mind of the collectors, so that here other considerations had influence; thus Hosea stands first, as the largest of the pre-exilic minor prophets (cf. the Epistle to the Humans at the head of the Pauline Epistles). Cf. an attempt to exhibit the genesis of the whole book in detail in H. Ewald, Propli. of Old Test. vol. i. 91, 98 f. Delitzsch (Rudelb. and Guericke's Zeitschr. 1851, p. 92 f.) tries to construct an arrangement by mottoes and association of ideas; lie is followed by Keil, Introd. to O. T. i. 305. With chronology as our rule, we should get (in our opinion) the following order, in which we recommend the books to be read: 1. Obadiah; 2. Joel; [3. Jonah;] 4. Amos; 5. Hosea, (Zecli. ix.-xi.); G. Micah; 7. Nahum; 8. Zephaniah; 9. Habakkuk, (Zech. xii.-xiv.); 10. Haggai; 11. Zechariah (i.-viii.); 12. Malachi.
