Book Commentaries on the Twelve Minor Prophets Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Commentaries on the Twelve Minor Prophets Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Jean Calvin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the Twelve Minor Prophets, Vol. 3 Contained in this Volume, as in the last, are the Writings of three Prophets: and they are explained and elucidated in the Author's peculiar manner; every sentence being dissected and examined, and the meaning ascertained according to the context, without the introduction of any extraneous matters. The main object throughout seems to have been to exhibit the genuine sense and design of the Sacred Writers. The Book of Jonah is a plain narrative, and no part is supposed to have been written in the style of poetry except the prayer in the second chapter. Some things in this Book have furnished Infidels with objections, and have induced some learned men, bearing at least the name of believers, to indulge in inventions. To satisfy Infidels or themselves, they have endeavoured to prove, that this Book is either an historical allegory, or a parable, or a dream, or a moral fiction, or something else still more absurd and extravagant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries, Vol. 4: On the Twelve Minor Prophets The present Volume, though it contains the Works of Three Prophets, is yet considerably smaller in size than the preceding Volumes; but the last will more than compensate for this deficiency. The two first Prophets, Habakkuk and Zephaniah, lived before the Captivity; and the other, Haggai, began his prophetic office about sixteen years after the return of the great body of the people from Babylon by the permission given them by King Cyrus. It is commonly thought that Habakkuk prophesied after Zephaniah, though placed before him in our Bibles. The reign of Jehoiakin is assigned as his age, about 608 years before Christ, while Zephaniah performed his office in the reign of Josiah, about 30 years earlier. Like the other prophets he is mainly engaged in reproving the extreme wickedness of the people, on account of which he denounces on them the judgments of God, while he gives occasional intimations of a better state of things, and affords some glimpses of the blessings of the gospel. Book The Book of the Twelve Prophets Commonly Called the Minor Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Twelve Prophets, Commonly Called the Minor, Vol. 1 of 2 The Prophets, to whom this and a following volume are dedicated, have, to our loss, been haunted for centuries by a peddling and an ambiguous title. Their Twelve Books are in size smaller than those of the great Three which precede them, and doubtless none of their chapters soar so high as the brilliant summits to which we are swept by Isaiah and the Prophet of the Exile. But in every other respect they are undeserving of the niggardly name of "Minor." Two of them, Amos and Hosea, were the first of all prophecy - rising cliff-like, with a sheer and magnificent originality, to a height and a mass sufficient to set after them the trend and slope of the whole prophetic range. The Twelve together cover the extent of that range, and illustrate the development of prophecy at almost every stage from the eighth century to the fourth. Yet even more than in the case of Isaiah or Jeremiah, the Church has been content to use a passage here and a passage there, leaving the rest of the books to absolute neglect or the almost equal oblivion of routine-reading. Book The Twelve Minor Prophets Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Twelve Minor Prophets Classic Reprint written by Conrad von Orelli and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Twelve Minor Prophets The order of the writings in LXX is not the same as in the Hebrew canon. Hebrew: 1. Hosea; 2. Joel; 3. Amos; 4. Obadiah; 5. Jonah; 6. Micah. LXX: 1. Hosea; 2. Amos; 3. Micah; 4. Joel; 5. Obadiah; 6. Jonah. Both: 7. Nahum; 8. Habakkuk; 9. Zephaniah; 10. Haggai; 11. Zechariah; 12. Malachi. The first arrangement seems more original; yet neither the one nor the other is of importance for determining the date of these writings, as in both, while the chronological element plainly appears towards the end (Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi), the question of time in the other books does not seem to have been so present to the mind of the collectors, so that here other considerations had influence; thus Hosea stands first, as the largest of the pre-exilic minor prophets (cf. the Epistle to the Humans at the head of the Pauline Epistles). Cf. an attempt to exhibit the genesis of the whole book in detail in H. Ewald, Propli. of Old Test. vol. i. 91, 98 f. Delitzsch (Rudelb. and Guericke's Zeitschr. 1851, p. 92 f.) tries to construct an arrangement by mottoes and association of ideas; lie is followed by Keil, Introd. to O. T. i. 305. With chronology as our rule, we should get (in our opinion) the following order, in which we recommend the books to be read: 1. Obadiah; 2. Joel; [3. Jonah;] 4. Amos; 5. Hosea, (Zecli. ix.-xi.); G. Micah; 7. Nahum; 8. Zephaniah; 9. Habakkuk, (Zech. xii.-xiv.); 10. Haggai; 11. Zechariah (i.-viii.); 12. Malachi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Minor Prophets: With a Commentary Explanatory and Practical and Introductions to the Several Books To this end, it is our purpose to use those more thoughtful writers Of all times, who have professedly, or, as far as we know, incidentally developed the meaning of portions or texts of the sacred volume, men who understood Holy Scripture through that same Spirit by Whom it was written, to whom prayer, meditation, and a sanctified life laid Open its meaning. For He Who first gave to man the words of eternal life still hides their meaning from those who are wise and prudent in their own eyes, and giveth wisdom to the simple. Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. The reading Of the Scriptures is the Opening of Heaven. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
