But even without this professional motive for its acquisition, it is, and must be an essential part of legal education, if it be really intended to supply the student with those attainments which will adequately qualify him for his Profession, and render the success of its exercise dependent on himself and on the extent of his attainments, and wholly independent of all adventitious and extrinsic advantages. The Civil Law has had so extensive an influence upon every judicial system in Europe, and such is its own intrinsic excellence, that the student can take no step in the study of any particular system of juris prudence without feeling the necessity of directing his attention to it.
