Book Giacomo Zabarella De rebus naturalibus 2 vols

Download or read book Giacomo Zabarella De rebus naturalibus 2 vols written by José Manuel García Valverde and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 1301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giacomo Zabarella (1533-1589) was a Renaissance Aristotelian who enjoyed extraordinary prestige in life, especially in the fields of logic and natural philosophy. The De rebus naturalibus libri XXX was completed by Zabarella at the very end of his life: the dedicatory letter to Pope Sixtus V is dated just a month before his death. This writing had great impact and a large influence, as its editorial success in Italy and abroad (especially in Germany) reflects. It represents a massive effort to collect all the issues that come under the heading of “natural philosophy” and that had been taking shape from antiquity to the time of Zabarella within the vast and multifarious field of Aristotelianism: hence its encyclopedic character and extraordinary extension.

Book Fate Providence and Moral Responsibility in Ancient Medieval and Early Modern Thought

Download or read book Fate Providence and Moral Responsibility in Ancient Medieval and Early Modern Thought written by Pieter d’Hoine and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on key moments in the intellectual history of the West This book forms a major contribution to the discussion on fate, providence and moral responsibility in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Early Modern times. Through 37 original papers, renowned scholars from many different countries, as well as a number of young and promising researchers, write the history of the philosophical problems of freedom and determinism since its origins in pre-socratic philosophy up to the seventeenth century. The main focus points are classic Antiquity (Plato and Aristotle), the Neoplatonic synthesis of late Antiquity (Plotinus, Proclus, Simplicius), and thirteenth-century scholasticism (Thomas Aquinas, Henry of Ghent). They do not only represent key moments in the intellectual history of the West, but are also the central figures and periods to which Carlos Steel, the dedicatary of this volume, has devoted his philosophical career.

Book Revolutions and Continuity in Greek Mathematics

Download or read book Revolutions and Continuity in Greek Mathematics written by Michalis Sialaros and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a number of leading scholars working in the field of ancient Greek mathematics to present their latest research. In their respective area of specialization, all contributors offer stimulating approaches to questions of historical and historiographical ‘revolutions’ and ‘continuity’. Taken together, they provide a powerful lens for evaluating the applicability of Thomas Kuhn’s ideas on ‘scientific revolutions’ to the discipline of ancient Greek mathematics. Besides the latest historiographical studies on ‘geometrical algebra’ and ‘premodern algebra’, the reader will find here some papers which offer new insights into the controversial relationship between Greek and pre-Hellenic mathematical practices. Some other contributions place emphasis on the other edge of the historical spectrum, by exploring historical lines of ‘continuity’ between ancient Greek, Byzantine and post-Hellenic mathematics. The terminology employed by Greek mathematicians, along with various non-textual and material elements, is another topic which some of the essays in the volume explore. Finally, the last three articles focus on a traditionally rich source on ancient Greek mathematics; namely the works of Plato and Aristotle.

Book Aristotle and Philoponus on Light

Download or read book Aristotle and Philoponus on Light written by Jean De Groot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991. Philoponus’ long commentary on Aristotle’s definition of light sets up the major concerns, both in optics and theory of light, that are discussed here. Light was of special interest in Neoplatonism because of its being something incorporeal in the world of natural bodies. Light therefore had a special role in the philosophical analysis of the interpenetration of bodies and was also a paradigm for the soul-body problem. The book contains much about the physiology of vision as well as the propagation of light. Several chapters investigate the philosophical theory behind what came to be known as ‘multiplication of species’ in medieval light theory. These issues in the history of science are placed within an analysis of Neoplatonic development of the distinction between Aristotle’s kinesis and energeia. The book treats Philoponus’ philosophy of mathematical science from the point of view of matter, quantity, and three-dimensionality.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique bibliography of literary works that survive from Greek antiquity, this Canon is a register of all the information stored in the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, a vast computerized database of Greek literature whose coverage is now being extended to the end of the Byzantine empire (c. 1453). The book encompasses nearly 3,200 authors, representing over 8,000 individual works and some 64,000,000 words of Greek text. It includes invaluable information on each writer's dates and geographical origins, their works, the genre to which each work belongs, the form in which each work survives, and the number of words each contains. Of particular usefulness is information on the standard or best textual edition of each work, as recommended by a special committee of the American Philological Association. This new third edition includes bibliographical information on some 7,000,000 additional words of text and includes nearly 300 additional authors. Older entries have been entirely updated.
