The Paraphrase by Themistius, who ran his own philosophical school in Constantinople in the mid-fourth century, has been one of the most important texts in the Aristotelian tradition. This is mainly due to the influence of his interpretation of Aristotle’s noetic on the great medieval thinkers, especially Averroes and Thomas Aquinas. That influence was also prominent on Renaissance Aristotelians and on later scholasticism. Themistius offered an interpretation of the account of the so called active intellect in the De Anima III.5 that rejected the identification of that intellect with God previously proposed by Alexander of Aphrodisias. But he also discussed other philosophical problems. His method was largely pedagogical. Themistius aimed to provide a clear restatement of Aristotle’s textual basis which would be accessible as an elementary exegesis. To do so, he executed an interpretation of Aristotle’s psychology that was faithful to the original text. But he was also aware of the need for some reconstruction and reformulation of those ideas that were far from being perfectly delimited by Aristotle himself in his text. This new critical edition is based on a thorough analysis of the manuscript tradition, which has been arranged and schematized by means of a stemma codicum. Medieval translations have also been considered, as well as the various printed versions of the text from the Aldine edition to the 19th century.

Revisiting scholarly assumptions about the tactility of sight in the Byzantine world, it demonstrates how the haptic language associated with vision referred to the cognitive actions of the viewer as they grasped sensory data in the mind in order to comprehend and produce working imaginations of objects for thought and memory. At stake is how the affordances and limitations of the senses came to delineate and cultivate the manner in which art and rhetoric was understood as mediating the realities they wished to convey. This would similarly come to contour how Byzantine religious culture could also go about accessing the sacred, the image serving as a site of desire for the mediated representation of the Divine.

For this background to come to light, it took a ground-breaking exposition of Anaxagoras’ philosophy and its legacy to Classical and Late Antiquity (Plato, Aristotle, Stoics, Origen, Neoplatonism), assessing critically Aristotle’s distorted representation of Anaxagoras. Origen, formerly a Greek philosopher of note, whom Proclus styled an anti-Platonist, is placed in the history of philosophy for the first time. By drawing on his Anaxagorean background, and being the first to revive the Anaxagorean Theory of Logoi, he paved the way to Nicaea. He was an anti-Platonist because he was an Anaxagorean philosopher with far-reaching influence, also on Neoplatonists such as Porphyry. His theology made an impact not only on the Cappadocians, but also on later Christian authors. His theory of the soul, now expounded in the light of his philosophical background, turns out more orthodox than that of some Christian stars of the Byzantine imperial orthodoxy.

Book excerpt: This book offers for the first time a comprehensive study of the reception and reworking of the Peripatetic theory of the soul in the Kitāb al-Nafs (Book of the Soul) by Avicenna (d. 1037). This study seeks to frame Avicenna’s science of the soul (or psychology) by focusing on three key concepts: subject, definition, and activity. The examination of these concepts will disclose the twofold consideration of the soul in Avicenna’s psychology. Besides the ‘general approach’ to the soul of sublunary living beings, which is the formal principle of the body, Avicenna’s psychology also exhibits a ‘specific orientation’ towards the soul in itself, i.e. the human rational soul that, considered in isolation from the body, is a self-subsistent substance, identical with the theoretical intellect and capable of surviving severance from the body. These two investigations demonstrate the coexistence in Avicenna’s psychology of a more specific and less physical science (psychologia specialis) within a more general and overall physical one (psychologia generalis).
