Book A Commentary on the Gospel of John

Download or read book A Commentary on the Gospel of John written by Johannes Beutler and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Testament scholar Johannes Beutler brings together a lifetime of study and reflection in this acclaimed commentary, first published in German in 2013 and now available to English-speaking audiences for the first time. Moving through the Gospel of John with a careful and critical eye, Beutler engages the relevant primary and secondary sources; summarizes the existing discussion; and presents syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic analyses of the text. As he meticulously examines the Fourth Gospel, Beutler pays special attention to the influence of Old Testament and Early Jewish traditions, to the overall structure of the Gospel of John, and to evidence suggesting a later stratum of contextualized "re-readings" in the composition of the Gospel. Bold, literary, and theological, this volume represents a landmark work of German biblical scholarship.

Book Anti Judaism and the Gospel of John

Download or read book Anti Judaism and the Gospel of John written by Mirosław Stanisław Wróbel and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the light of the research undertaken in this book the author concludes that the so called "anti-Jewish" texts in Johannine Gospel are not directed against the Jews being an ethnic or religious community. The object of the polemic and attacks is not the entire Jewish nation across the span of all the ages but a group of the Jewish leaders or opponents to Jesus in the First Century AD. Looking through the prism of the aposynagogal polemics, one can notice that the state of tension between the Johannine community and the rabbinic Judaism is inter-Jewish, not anti-Jewish, in character. The source of the polemical language of the Fourth Gospel is the Christological discussion in the historical and sociological context (the Messianic confession, the excommunication from the Synagogue, the presence of Samaritans in the Johannine community, the struggle for the preservation of the identity).

Book Asceticism and Exegesis in Early Christianity

Download or read book Asceticism and Exegesis in Early Christianity written by Hans-Ulrich Weidemann and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning many of the early Christian communities led an ascetic lifestyle, although a good number of New Testament texts do not seem suitable for justifying radical ascetic and encratite practice. The question thus arises how the different forms of asceticism could be justified on the basis of those scriptures. The articles of the volume focus on the interpretation and application of New Testament texts in various ascetic milieus and in the works of several early Christian authors and on the reception history of New Testament texts either supporting or resisting an ascetic relecture.

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2013-03-20
  • ISBN : 1620326051
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book The Self Donation of God written by Jack D. Kilcrease and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Self-Donation of God, Jack Kilcrease argues that the speech-act of promise is always an act of self-donation. A person who unilaterally promises to another is bound to take a particular series of actions to fulfill that promise. Being that creation is grounded in God's promising speech, the divine-human relationship is fundamentally one of divine self-donation and human receptivity. Sin disrupts this relationship and therefore redemption is constituted by a reassertion of divine promise of salvation in the face of the condemnation of the law (Gen 3:15). As a new and effective word of grace, the promise of a savior begins the process of redemption within which God speaks forth a new narrative of creation. In this new narrative, God gives himself in an even deeper manner to humanity. By donating himself through a promise, first to the protological humanity and then to Israel, he binds himself to them. At the end of this history of self-binding, God in Christ enters into the condemnation of the law, neutralizes it in the cross, and brings about a new creation through his omnipotent word of promise actualized in the resurrection.
