Il est ici traduit en français pour la première fois. L'Abrégé, traduit dès 1596, inspira le jeune Bérulle et compta bientôt une cinquantaine d'éditions européennes. Ce petit ouvrage, qui enseigne une doctrine des plus hauts degrés de l'union à Dieu cohérente avec la vie active, marqua profondément la spiritualité du XVIle siècle. Recommandé par François de Sales, Surin et d'autres maîtres à l'égal de l'Imitation de Jésus-Christ, il nourrit le courant mystique qui se répandait alors chez les laïcs aussi bien que chez les religieux. Gagliardi est le témoin insigne d'une tradition, que l'on aura grand avantage à redécouvrir aujourd'hui. Son interprétation des Exercices nous fait saisir sur le vif avec quelle fidélité et quels accents ils étaient alors donnés. Voici un "directoire" éminent qui, avec le relief du temps, éclaire singulièrement les pratiques d'aujourd'hui.
