Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the terrorist attack of September 11th America has been filled with clouds of evil. They have darkened our reason and covered us with ashes of anger. How do we sort out our feelings of revenge and retaliation with those of understanding, compassion and love? Some of us believe knowledge of American history will give us the insight and maturity that we need to help our nation through this war on terrorism. American citizens need to understand the basic principles of democracy and freedom because they must know what we fight for. Americans need to rededicate themselves to the cause of freedom to face the future. Freedom should not be taken for granted because there are those who would take it from us. People need to understand that some governments terrorize and abuse their people. These governments intentionally control their people by keeping them oppressed and ignorant. The history of our country is great but as Thomas Jefferson warned: "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be". A recent alarming ACTA report which polled seniors at the nation's top 55 colleges indicates that we have a generation of Americans who are historically illiterate. The survey revealed that almost half would fail the basic test in American history required for immigrants who seek citizenship in the United States. American Symbols Commemorative Edition has the common information about the different state flowers, birds and trees as well as information about the many new symbols which the states have enacted which includes their scientific names and dates of inception it also includes the active and colorful history of each state and interesting facts and trivia about the states.

Download or read book Creating Freedom written by Laurie A. Wilkie and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians' conception of plantation life in the American South, both post- and antebellum, derives almost exclusively from the written record, hence mainly from the white owners' perspectives. In Creating Freedom, historical archaeologist Laurie Wilkie pulls the half-opened curtain wider by seeking out the experiences of the majority of people who made their home on plantations: the African American laborers. Specifically, Wilkie examines the lives of four black families who lived at Oakley Plantation in south Louisiana's West Feliciana Parish over the course of one hundred years. Using an innovative blend of archaeological evidence and oral interviews, as well as written documents, she builds a composite of their daily existence that is at once riveting and humanizing in its detail and invaluable in its broader applications. Creating Freedom is in part Wilkie's attempt to understand how African Americans at Oakley Plantation, and by extension most southern blacks, endured the violence and oppression of slavery, Reconstruction, and Jim Crow. It is through their material culture, enhanced by a range of other data, that she descries the complex but uplifting process by which they retained their ties to a cultural past while renegotiating their identity as free persons.

Download or read book Cajun Country Guide written by Macon Fry and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 1999-02-28 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's just nowhere else but South Louisiana to find real knee-slapping, crowd-hooting Zydeco music. Even the big-city chefs can't cook up a Cajun meal the way they do at the roadside restaurants deep in the bayous of Acadiana. Likewise, no other guide matches the amount of in-depth information presented in Cajun Country Guide. It's a study of Cajuns that tells visitors how to find the sights, sounds, and flavors of one of America's most culturally unique regions. Take a vacation to a part of our own country that, in some places, didn't even speak English until nearly fifty years ago. While modern technology is weeding out some of the one-of-a-kind qualities of this subculture, not all of them are gone, or even hard to find, if you know how to hunt for them. And there are no better hunters than authors Macon Fry and Julie Posner. With the handy maps, reviews, and recommendations packed into the Cajun Country Guide, a trip to the bayous won't leave one feeling like a visitor, but more like a native who has come back home.

This book was released on 2005-06-22 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though they speak several different languages and organize themselves into many distinct tribes, the Native American peoples of the Southeast share a complex ancient culture and a tumultuous history. This volume examines and synthesizes their history through each of its integral phases: the complex and elaborate societies that emerged and flourished in the Pre-Columbian period; the triple curse of disease, economic dependency, and political instability brought by the European invasion; the role of Native Americans in the inter-colonial struggles for control of the region; the removal of the "Five Civilized Tribes" to Oklahoma; the challenges and adaptations of the post-removal period; and the creativity and persistence of those who remained in the Southeast.
