Book Seductive Resistance The Poetry of Th ophile Gautier

Download or read book Seductive Resistance The Poetry of Th ophile Gautier written by Constance Gosselin Schick and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gautier's poetry merits an attentive reading which respects his own essential criterion of poeticity, namely, textuality. This is a poetry which puts on display its literariness, that is, its existence as cultural artifact. In so doing, however, it also puts on display the absence of and its resistance to whatever personal or real signified it would evoke or name. Its beauty and self-indulgent pleasure reveal their hollowness and inadequacy. Its chiseled, polished surface renders its borders or limits and its play unsatisfyingly and teasingly perceptible. Its very superficiality allows, invites and seduces the reader to go entre les lignes and perceive the mystery, not of what has been symbolically buried/unburied, concealed/revealed, but of the truly absent, the abîmes superficiels. Chapter 1, focusing on texts from the Poésies of 1830, studies the intextual repetition of Gautier's poetry, the citations, imitations and transpositions which make evident the poetry's displacement of the significant and the personal into aesthetic simulacra. Chapter 2 deals with the poems of Gautier's second collection, Albertus, and analyzes the use of allegory and of humor as further markers of textual substitution. The inherent lifelessness and illusoriness of the textual artifact is revealed in the poems of La Comédie de la Mort, the collection examined in chapter 3. Chapter 4 analyzes the so-called descriptive, referential poetry of España, and finds that the monde extérieur of Gautier's poetry functions to express an absence of self and is itself always shown to be other than the Other. The dimunition of the poetic effected in Emaux et Camées is the subject of chapter 5, and chapter 6 deals with the contextuality, the fetishism, and the eroticism revealed in a miscellany of poems - in particular the libertine poems - which do not figure in Gautier's five major collections. By short-circuiting significations and transforming them into seductive appearances, Gautier reveals himself to be the acknowledged maître of both Baudelaire and Mallarmé.

Book L criture du bonheur dans le roman contemporain

Download or read book L criture du bonheur dans le roman contemporain written by Ruth Amar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the ages, the pursuit of Happiness has been at the heart of the needs and desires each individual would seek to fulfill, while as a concept, Happiness has always resonated strongly in poetic as well as philosophical, sociological and psychological contexts. But what about Happiness today, in a world dominated by technology, driven by productivity and dictated by efficiency? Does Happiness still feature in contemporary fiction in any significant way? Or has it perhaps gone underground, adopting different guises? Would we still call that “duty of happiness” that Pascal Bruckner saw as “present at the second half of the twentieth century” a relevant force today? Or has it waned perceptibly? The articles brought together in this volume seek to work out answers to these and similar questions, creatively addressing the imminent risks but also eagerly following up the intriguing possibilities one encounters when interrogating Happiness in the contemporary novel. Originally based on an international conference organized at the University of Haifa, Israel, in May 2010, the volume is structured around the axes we found useful as a basis for the various approaches towards Happiness in Europe and the historical and social events that influenced the writing of Happiness as they defined the 20th century and have impacted on the 21st: the Holocaust, the Soviet dystopia, consumerism, postmodernism, “everyday life,” the various as yet unarticulated new modes of life they have given rise to, and so on. A new writing of happiness then? At the very least this volume targets the contemporary novel without wanting to solidify works, instead taking into account the fluctuations Happiness has been subjected to, and the diversity and especially the paradoxes it has created, while we have been keen to preserve a “precise” reading of the texts and have felt compelled to respect and preserve the particular features that make the writings of the authors we focus on stand out.

Book Translations Into English

Download or read book Translations Into English written by Denis Devlin and published by Dedalus Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Denis Devlin's poetry was formed in the Modernist mould, self-aware and kaleidoscopic. An aesthetics of fragmentation encouraged diversity which remained diversity despite the necessary process of defining a poetic identity. Integrating components from many sources did not imply assimilation to the point of blandness but a delight in provocative and frequently ironic juxtapositions." So begins Roger Little's Introduction to this collection of the translations from French, German and Italian made by the Irish poet Denis Devlin whom John Montague has called "the most resolutely cosmopolitan of recent Irish poets". First published in 1992, Irish poet Denis Devlin's Translations into English, edited by Roger Little, is reissued now in conjunction with Collected Poems of Denis Devlin, edited by JCC Mays (first published in 1989). In making these two major collections of Devlin's work available again, Dedalus hopes to introduce a new readership to the work of one of the most influential and, according to Samuel Beckett, along with Brian Coffey "without question the most interesting of the youngest generation of Irish poets".
