Book Coming to Britain The Discretion Factor

Download or read book Coming to Britain The Discretion Factor written by Edwin Goodwin and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of immigration in Britain has become a dark minefield especially for asylum-seekers and irregular migrants. This is as a result of arbitrary changes in legislation and probably the politics of Brexit. Unsettled migrants, it seems, are completely at the mercy of the Home Office decision-makers - because the Home Office simply change the immigration rules when it does not like the answers the courts are giving. The current bureaucracy is hostile, cynical and hardened to every sob story under the sun. Arbitrary policies tear apart families and ruin lives. The treadmill of unfair bureaucratic decisions is a direct result of a relentless drive towards unrealistic migration caps that don't take real lives into account. Indeed, there are ever so many ways in which these faceless bureaucrats ride roughshod over the rights and legitimate expectation of migrants. It is hoped that this essay will do something to lessen the heavily tilted playing field on which migrants and their representatives must contend.

Book The Police and the Expansion of Public Order Law in Britain 1829 2014

Download or read book The Police and the Expansion of Public Order Law in Britain 1829 2014 written by Iain Channing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incidences of public disorder, and the manner in which they have been suppressed, have repeatedly ignited debate on the role of policing, the effectiveness of current legislation and the implications for human rights and civil liberties. These same issues have reverberated throughout British history, and have frequently resulted in the enactment of new legislation that reactively aimed to counter the specific concern of that era. This book offers a detailed analysis of the expansion of public order law in the context of the historical and political developments in British society. The correlation of key historical events and the enactment of consequent legislation is a key theme that resonates throughout the book, and demonstrates the expanding influence of the law on public assemblies and protest, which has continued to criminalise and prohibit certain social behaviours. Crucial movements in Britain’s social and political history who have all engaged in, or have provoked public disorder, are examined in the book. Other incidents of riot and disorder, such as the Featherstone Riot (1893), the Battle of Cable Street (1936), the Inner City Riots (1980s) and the UK riots (2011) are also covered. By positioning legal developments within their historical context, the book demonstrates the ebb and flow between the prominence of the competing demands of the liberties of free expression and assembly on the one hand and the protection of the general public and property on the other. This book is essential reading for academics and students in the fields of criminology, history and law.

Book The Territorial Factor

Download or read book The Territorial Factor written by Gertjan Dijkink and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays political territoriality is profoundly put to the test by globalization, the rise of the network-society, international migration and new types of risk that state governments find hard to control. Yet, new political configurations do not invalidate the relevance of territory and territorial identity right away. Moreover, people who want to escape or forget foreign dominace still reach for the traditionally sovereign state (Eastern Europe, Asia). In this book an international group of political geographers analyse the meaning of post-modern transfromation in territoriality at different geographical scales: global, (inter) national and local. They cover such varied topics as the probability of a clash between civilizations, the rise of World-cities, the disintegration of African States, ethnic conflicts and politics in Europe, the meaning of a supranational territorial order (European Union), the end of the welfare state, nation-building and its symbols, Israeli cultural politics, urban regimes and local conflict-defense mechanisms. The perspectives put forward, match more general theoretical geography and political science and involve case studies from different parts of the World. This important new study is of immediate interest to students of all levels of politcial science, sociology, social geography, administrative science, international relations, contermpoary history, and to policy makers and politicians.
