Book excerpt: Unsigned, undated study, probably from around 1856, on the commercial relations of Japan with China, Korea, and the western powers of Great Britain, Russia, Portugal, Netherlands, and the United States. In his introductory remarks about the advantages of free trade and the limitations of protectionism, the author questions how Japan and China, who have existed under the strictest protective trade barriers, have enjoyed such economic prosperity. Attempting to answer this paradox, he discusses the commercial history of Japan, beginning with the Portuguese and the Dutch presence there during the 16th century, expulsion of the Portuguese from Japan during the early part of the 17th century, attempts since 1800 by the U.S., Russia, and Great Britain to establish trade relations with Japan, and present-day commerce of the Dutch with Japan. Other chapters discuss Chinese trade in Japan, with tables of imports by the Chinese to Japan, and exports to China; commerce between Japan and Korea and the surrounding islands; and the changes which have occurred since 1850 in Japan's trade relations with other countries, namely Russia, Great Britain, and the U.S. In 1851, Commodore Perry visited Japan in order to obtain permission for American steamships to dock in Japanese ports and replenish their supply of coal en route to China. The treaty between the two countries was ultimately signed, thus opening up Japanese ports which had long been closed to foreign nations. The author also discusses the treaty between England and Japan of 1854, and includes the text of the treaty of 1855 between the Netherlands and Japan. He concludes with a general assessment of potential trade developments related to the steamship and to free trade policies, specifically new trade with Japan.

Book excerpt: By the end of the sixteenth century, Japan and the Philippines established their first commercial and diplomatic relations, and during the Keicho era (1596-1615) an attempt of cooperation between Madrid and the government of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1598-1616) was planned. This allowed the Spaniards to foster their trade in Japan and to favor its penetration by missionaries. This volume discusses the different phases of the process of diplomatic/commercial and missionary relations within the context of the internal transformation of Japan and its ambitions for regional influence in Asia, on the edge of the Sinocentrism of the Ming Dynasty. It also analyzes the context of institutional and legal restrictions of the expansion of the Philippine archipelago as well as several factors that eventually led to the failure of the Hispano-Japanese cooperation and to the gradual disappearance of all kinds of formal contacts with Japan in the second decade of the seventeenth century.
