Book A critical engagement with theological education in Africa

Download or read book A critical engagement with theological education in Africa written by Johannes J. Knoetze and published by AOSIS. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The higher education landscape has arguably become one of the most arduous to traverse. More so in the African context, where a host of variables continiously challenge educators to reflect critically on their philosophies and practices as they engage an ever-changing audience. In this book, a critical engagement with theological education in Africa is offered. As the book originates from South Africa, it is presented as a South African perspective, although contributors are situated accross the African continent and abroad. The common denominator is that all contributers are, in some way or another, invested in theological education in Africa. The main contribution of this collaborative work is to be sought in the insights it offers on four main areas of theological education: A historical and current orientation on theological edcuation in Africa, some paradigm shifts in theological education in Africa, ministerial formation needs versus theological education challenges, and a critical reflection on elective models and methods. The book presents the original and innovative research of scholars for fellow scholars involved in theological higher education as it is grounded in the respective fields of interest of each contributor. It contributes to a better understanding of the complex African theological higher education landscape that is also mindful of post-COVID-19 realities. Methodologically the work draws on a combination of methods, including literature studies, empirical work, and in some cases sectional offerings from doctoral studies, as indicated in the various chapters.

  • Author : Kenneth Mills
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ecclesiastical investigations into Indian religious error--the Extirpation of idolatry--that occurred in the seventeenth-and eighteenth-century Archdiocese of Lima come to life here as the most revealing sources on colonial Andean religion and culture. Focusing on a largely neglected period, 1640 to 1750, and moving beyond portrayals that often view the relationships between indigenous peoples and Europeans solely in terms of repression, opposition, or accommodation, Kenneth Mills provides a wealth of new material and interpretation for understanding native Andeans and Spanish Christians as participants in a common, if not harmonious, history. By examining colonial interaction and "religion as lived," he introduces memorable native Andean and Spanish actors and finds vivid points of entry into the complex realities of parish life in the mid-colonial Andes. Mills describes fitful, sometimes unintentional, and often ambiguous kinds of religious change among Andeans. He shows that many of the Quechua speakers whose testimonies form the bulk of the archival evidence were simultaneously active Catholic parishioners and adherents to a complex of transforming Andean religious structures. Mills also explores the notions of reformation and correction that fueled the extirpating process in the central Andes, as elsewhere. Moreover, he demonstrates wide differences of opinion among Spanish churchmen as to the best manner to proceed against the suspect religiosity of baptized Andeans--many of whom considered themselves Christians. In so doing, he connects this religious history to experiences in other regions of colonial Spanish America and to wider relations between Christian and non-Christian peoples.

Book excerpt: With the advances of Galdos scholarship over the last twenty years, the episodios are increasingly treated as works of fiction rather than as means of transmitting elementary historical facts to the ignorant; furthermore, characters' protestations are no longer always taken at face value. The present volume complements the previous study, Galdos: The Mature Thought, in which the twenty-six episodios written between 1898 and 1912 are examined in their ideological context.

Book The Identity of Liberation in Latin American Thought

Download or read book The Identity of Liberation in Latin American Thought written by Mario Sáenz and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a close examination of philosopher Leopoldo Zea's historicist phenomenology, Mario Saenz offers fresh insights into the role of Mexican intellectuals in the creation of a Latin American "philosophy of liberation". While this philosophy of liberation has been widely recognized as the most intellectual political ideology to emerge from Latin America this century, few scholars have specifically explored the Mexican roots of this intellectual movement. Saenz redresses this imbalance by placing Zea and his contemporary intellectuals firmly within the context of post-revolutionary Mexico, a political and social landscape that fostered criticisms of colonial and neo-colonial structures of dependence. Saenz demonstrates how Zea's philosophy was informed by a sense of Mexico's distinctive social and cultural identity.

Book The Underside of Modernity

Download or read book The Underside of Modernity written by Enrique Dussel and published by Humanities Press International. This book was released on 1998 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dussel (ethics, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico) shows how North American and European philosophies have failed to give historically faithful analysis of the genesis of the "myth" of modernity, and have never engaged in a serious questioning of their own Eurocentric presuppositions. He contends that North American and European philosophers have fallen into a false belief that there is a linear sequence that moves from the premodern to the modern, developed, and industrialized.
