Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comedies of Words and Other Plays Schnitzler's first play Anatol, a cycle of dialogues written around a central character ap pearing in each, was probably finished in 1889 it was produced in I892. The success of Anatol was immediate. Its wit and its shrewd grasp of human nature captured Vienna like a storm. Up to the time of this writing he has written and produced about twenty five plays his last, big play, Professor Bernhardi having started a wild sensation, crimination and recrimination, throughout the whole of Austria and Germany; while, on the other hand, his marvellous activity both as a novelist and short story writer has prompted criticism, outside of Austria and Germany, to deliberately couple his name with the names of Zola, Dostoievsky and de Maupassant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nowadays: A Contemporaneous Comedy There are obvious reasons why many plays are refused production, or fail to find ideal interpretation upon the stage for which every play should primarily be written. The demands and caprices, too, of our over-stimulated theater are such that financial success is not necessarily the indication of a play's merit, nor does financial failure, which may be likewise due to a variety of causes, imply that a play is unworthy. But the printed page, whether a play succeeds or fails, affords the dramatist some record of his endeavor. Through publication he renders his work accessible to those who may not have had the Opportunity of seeing it produced: through publication he makes his bold or futile bid for consideration in the dramatic literature of his time. As in Embers and Tradition, from several plays of which I have drawn the inspiration and suggestion of certain ideas and scenes, I have sought in Nowadays to reflect some spirit of the moment as expressed in the shifting standards of man and woman in relation to each other. My personal word to the reader would not be complete without a tribute to my wife, whose free spirit has gone into the making of this play. G. M. Download or read book The Tempest written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tempest: A Comedy is a one of the many famous plays written by the well known English playwright, William Shakespeare. A poet, playwright, and actor, Shakespeare is widely considered to be one of, if not the greatest writer in the English language. Frequently referred to as England's national poet, Shakespeare crafted thirty eight plays, two long narrative poems, and one hundred and fifty four sonnets in his lifetime. All of his plays, including The Tempest, have been translated into every major language and are consistently performed more often than plays by any other writer in the history of literature. In this play, Shakespeare examines magical elements not often seen in his other works as he crafts a world and characters that manipulate one another via magical means. The play centers around a father and daughter on an island and the father's attempt to ensnare the King Alonso of Naples into a political upheaval and a marriage between their children. While considered a comedy, this play draws heavily on romantic writings and is influenced by the tradition of tragicomedies. Through its use of illusion, manipulation, and the words of characters, this play has consistent reminders that it is just a play, or rather just another illusion of life. This tactic is one of the reasons that this play stands out to those familiar with Shakespeare's work as an interesting interpretation of play writing and the purpose of plays in the theater. The Tempest: A Comedy is a wonderfully executed play by the incomparable playwright, William Shakespeare. This is a wonderful read for individuals interested in Shakespeare and his work along with individuals with a distinct interest in English plays and theater. This book is bound to be exciting for students of drama, teachers of drama and literature, and playwrights wanting to learn from the best playwright known to man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies: A Facsimile Edition The present reduced facsimile edition of Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, 67 Tragedies (london, more commonly known as the First Folio, reproduces as faithfully and accurately as modern techniques permit the excellent copy in the possession of the Elizabethan Club of Yale University. This copy, which formerly belonged to Henry Huth (english collector, 1815 was purchased in 1911 by the late Alexander Smith Cochran and presented to the Library of the Elizabethan Club, where it is now one of the treasures of the Club's superb Eliza bethan collection. For the sake of convenient handling the size of the original type page has here been reduced by approximately one - fifth. To ensure maximum readability stains have been removed whenever possible without interfering with the text itself, but no other retouching has been undertaken; consequently, because of irregularities in the printing of the Folio an occasional word or passage in the facsimile reproduction may be difficult to read. Liberal outside margins have been provided for the reader's notes and a paper suitable for writing in ink has been used. The photographing was entrusted to Frederic G. Book La Pierre de Touche

Download or read book La Pierre de Touche written by Émile Augier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from La Pierre De Touche: A Comedy Modern French playwrights commit another literary sin which stands in an odd paradoxical relation to the sin of preaching out of place. They deal, to sickening excess, with subjects and characters which, it is to be hoped, do not yet fill so large a space in French life as they do in French books. Let us take them at their word when they say that their purpose is to represent life as it really is. Are one-third of the women in France adventuresses? Certainly not; yet adventuresses make up about one-third of the number of female characters in modern French plays and novels. Is the subject of adultery and amorous in trigue the main occupation of French minds? Let us hope not; yet in these books there are scarcely more than two subjects seriously considered. The first, and chief one, is vice of this sort the second is the relation between the old nobility of blood and the new oligarchy of money. Download or read book Comedies Volume 1 written by William Shakespeare and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 1995-07-10 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare forged his tremendous art in the crucible of his comic imagination, which throughout his life enveloped and contained his tragic one. His early comedies—with their baroque poetic exuberance, intense theatricality, explosive bursts of humor, and superbly concrete realizations of the dialects of love—capture as in a chrysalis all that he was to become. They provide a complete inventory of the mind of our greatest writer in the middle of his golden youth. This volume contains The Comedy of Errors, The Taming of the Shrew, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Love's Labor's Lost, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and it's companion piece, Romeo and Juliet, which Tony Tanner describes in his introduction as "a tragedy by less than one minute." The texts, authoritatively edited by Sylvan Barnet, are supplemented with textual notes, bibliographies, a detailed chronology of Shakespeare's life and times, and a substantial introduction in which Tanner discusses each play individually and in the context of Shakespeare's oeuvre.

If I have told the truth, give me a clear sign Of it, so that I may know from the very outset that you are fair-minded toward me. (waits hopefully for applause) Those be wise men, in my opinion, who take Old wine and those who love to see Old plays. Yes, liking as you do the works and words Of ancient days, you should like Old plays better than all others; for, really, the new comedies that are produced nowadays are much more worthless than our new coins. We actors, having learned from popular rumour that it is the plays Of Plautus you keenly desire, present an ancient comedy Of his which has already been approved by you Older men. TO the younger, I am sure, it is unfamiliar; but it shall be our earnest endeavour to make them familiar with it. This play, when it was first presented, surpassed all others. In that era lived the garland Of poets who have now departed to the common bourne. Yet absent though they be, they profit us as though present. Now let me earnestly entreat you all to accord our company your kind attention. Away with care and thought of debts; let no man dread a dun!
