Book Junctures in Women s Leadership Business

Download or read book Junctures in Women s Leadership Business written by Crystal Bedley and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have women managed to break through the glass ceiling of the business world, and what management techniques do they employ once they ascend to the upper echelons of power? What difficult situations have these female business leaders faced, and what strategies have they used to resolve those challenges? Junctures in Women’s Leadership: Business answers these questions by highlighting the professional accomplishments of twelve remarkable women and examining how they responded to critical leadership challenges. Some of the figures profiled in the book are household names, including lifestyle maven Martha Stewart, influential chef Alice Waters, and trailblazing African-American entrepreneur Madame C.J. Walker. Others have spent less time in the public eye, such as Johnson & Johnson executive JoAnn Heffernan Heisen, Verizon Senior Vice President Diane McCarthy, Wells Fargo technology leader Avid Modjtabai, Xerox CEO Ursula Burns, Spanx founder Sara Blakely, inventor Jane ni Dhulchaointigh, engineering firm President Roseline Marston, Calvert Investments President and CEO Barbara Krumsiek, and Merrill Lynch executive Subha Barry. These women, from diverse backgrounds, have played important roles in their respective corporations and many have worked to improve the climate for women in male-dominated industries. This is a book about women who are leading change in business. Their stories illuminate the ways women are using their power and positions—whether from the middle ranks or the top, whether from within companies or by creating their own companies. Each case study in Junctures in Women’s Leadership: Business includes a compelling and instructive story of how a woman business leader handled a critical juncture or crisis in her career. Not only does the book offer an inspiring composite portrait of women succeeding in the business world, it also provides leadership lessons that will benefit readers regardless of gender.

Book The Electric Vehicle Revolution

Download or read book The Electric Vehicle Revolution written by Kenneth K. Boyer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Fascinating Look at the 5 Leading Personalities Driving the Transition to Electric Vehicles and Reinventing the Auto Industry The leading car manufacturing firms have all essentially pledged to transition from traditional carbon dioxide-emitting vehicles to battery-powered electric vehicles. Tesla has led the way to date, recently producing its three millionth car since its first sale in 2009. General Motors has committed to carbon neutrality in its global products and operations by 2040. Honda has committed to carbon neutrality as well as zero traffic collision fatalities by 2050. These are ambitious and noble goals, yet they will take a supreme transformation to achieve. In The Electric Vehicle Revolution, Kenneth K. Boyer highlights the promise, perils, and personalities of the world’s automobile makers as they re-engineer a post-carbon present and future. Driving the narrative is the key to it all: the green transformation of the global auto parts supply chain. This book includes never-before-reported stories of the leaders, designers, engineers, and inventors leading the charge to decarbonize the transportation sector from packaging to tires and more. Boyer examines the prospects and plans for this disruptive change, starting with stories of several automotive visionaries: Tesla CEO Elon Musk; Vietnam billionaire Pham Nhật Vuong; Ceer CEO Jim DeLuca; Monolith Corp cofounder Rob Hanson; and GM CEO Mary Barra. Each protagonist has a vision for transforming the world of transportation into a greener, more carbon-friendly industry while also earning profits in our predominantly capitalist world. Readers will learn how their breakthroughs and struggles illuminate the future while facing the question: Will an auto revolution lead the world to a more sustainable economic future, or will it be too late?

Book Diva

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kirsty Fairclough
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2023-09-07
  • ISBN : 1501368265
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Diva written by Kirsty Fairclough and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-09-07 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diva – a central figure in the landscape of contemporary popular culture: gossip-generating, scandal-courting, paparazzi-stalked. And yet the diva is at the epicentre of creative endeavours that resonate with contemporary feminist ideas, kick back against diminished social expectations, boldly call-out casual sexism and industry misogyny and, in terms of hip-hop, explores intersectional oppressions and unapologetically celebrates non-white cultural heritages. Diva beats and grooves echo across culture and politics in the West: from the borough to the White House, from arena concerts to nightclubs, from social media to social activism, from #MeToo to Black Lives Matter. Diva: Feminism and Fierceness from Pop to Hip-Hop addresses the diva phenomenon and its origins: its identity politics and LGBTQ+ components; its creativity and interventions in areas of popular culture (music, and beyond); its saints and sinners and controversies old and new; and its oppositions to, and recuperations by, the establishment; and its shifts from third to fourth waves of feminism. This co-edited collection brings together an international array of writers – from new voices to established names. The collection scopes the rise to power of the diva (looking to Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, Grace Jones, and Aaliyah), then turns to contemporary diva figures and their work (with Beyoncé, Amuro Namie, Janelle Monáe, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, and Nicki Minaj), and concludes by considering the presence of the diva in wider cultures, in terms of gallery curation, theatre productions, and stand-up comedy.

Book Blacks at the Net

Download or read book Blacks at the Net written by Sundiata Djata and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much has been written about black triumphs in boxing, baseball, and other sports, little has been said of similar accomplishments in tennis. In this book, the first is the first volume dedicated to that subject, Sundiata Djata more than cites facts and figures, he explores obstacles to such performance such as the discrimination that kept blacks out of pro tennis for decades. He examines the role that this white sport traditionally played in the black community. And he provides keen insights into the politics of professional sports and the challenges faced by today's black players. Drawing on original and published interviews, life writings, and newspaper articles, the author offers an in-depth look at black participation in tennis: from the first courts in Tuskegee in 1880, to players Reginald Weir and Gerald Norman, Jr., who challenged racism in the U. S. Lawn Tennis Association in the 1920s; from Harlem teen Bob Ryland's historic match with two white women in 1944 to the achievements of acclaimed later stars like Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe, Yannick Noah, and Venus and Serena Williams. Thoroughly researched and comprehensive in scope, the work's eventual two volumes will cover identity and black tennis in aboriginal Australia, North and South Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas. it is an ideal read for tennis players, sports historians, readers of black history and/or black sports figures, and all who are interested in the sport.

Book The Political Economy of Same Sex Marriage

Download or read book The Political Economy of Same Sex Marriage written by Bronwyn Winter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Same-sex marriage is now legal in twenty-nine countries and the subject of continued debate around the world. The Political Economy of Same-Sex Marriage: A Feminist Critique considers this debate from a political economy perspective. Rather than engaging directly in the now well-rehearsed social-movement and academic for-and-against debates, this book focuses on processes of institutionalization of same-sex marriage and so-called "rainbow families" within (neo)liberal capitalist democracies. It examines how states and markets appropriate same-sex marriage and family to enhance their own political and symbolic capital, consolidating power and profit within existing systems of gendered and raced socioeconomic stratification. Taking a radical feminist, heterodox, qualitative and intersectional approach, this book investigates the political economy of same-sex marriage across three axes: same-sex marriage as institution; same-sex marriage and the market; and the political economy of the "rainbow family". The examination of case studies from different countries and regions enables a comparative analysis that foregrounds cultural, political and economic path dependencies while at the same time highlighting a number of striking commonalities. In all the countries discussed in this book and in most respects, same-sex marriage has been integrated almost seamlessly into a mainstream/malestream political economy of marriage and family and its translation into added market and productive value. The Political Economy of Same-Sex Marriage: A Feminist Critique will be of use to researchers and students alike, and indeed to all those who are curious about the mainstreaming of homosexuality within twenty-first-century capitalist democracies.
