Book The Transformation of Italian Communism

Download or read book The Transformation of Italian Communism written by Leonard Weinberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the cold war and the fall of the Soviet empire have had major consequences for Italian politics. Leonard Weinberg explores some of those consequences, focusing on the transformation of the Italian Communist party from a Leninist to a democratic party. He also discusses the relationship between the end of communism and the unfolding of the entire Italian system. The Transformation of Italian Communism has two objectives. First, it calls the reader's attention to the role of international developments, an important but largely overlooked area involved in the study of European party politics. Traditional texts in this area emphasize domestic factors, but Weinberg focuses on the influence of international developments on domestic party politics in Italy. The implications for other nations are transparent. The second objective of this work is to examine how Italy's Communist party, the largest such party of its kind in the Western world, reacted to the fall of communism in Eastern Europe. Weinberg analyzes the meaning of these events for long-tune party members in Italy'as well as for Italian political and cultural life. The Transformation of Italian Communism offers an original, intimate, and unique assessment of how the end of the cold war has affected Italian political culture. It will be a valuable addition to those interested in the convulsions taking place in modem Italy, as well as to political scientists and theorists of political culture.

Download or read book Threats to Democracy written by Franco Ferraresi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first systematic research by a social scientist on the radical right-wing movements in Italy since 1945. During the heyday of right-wing violence between 1969 and 1980, street aggressions, attacks, and murders were commonplace. These bloody episodes were assumed to be the work of fanatical bands of "political soldiers" and urban warriors loosely controlled by secret services and other covert groups, which used them as part of a "strategy of tension" pursued in domestic and international circles. Franco Ferraresi here acknowledges that these rightist groups were in fact permitted a certain amount of freedom, and even in some cases actually aided, in the hope that revulsion at terrorist tactics would have the effect of mobilizing public opinion in favor of existing political arrangements. However, he also studies the extent to which they operated as autonomous units, while he carefully considers the political heritage, the doctrines, and the ideology that motivated them. With the decline of violent activity on both extremes of the political spectrum in the early 1980s, the theory and practice so comprehensively discussed by Ferraresi seemed to have entered a dormant stage. Ferraresi, however, places in context the recent resurgence of neo-fascist forces in Italy, and of the so-called New Right throughout Europe, together with the rise of fundamentalism in many parts of the world.

Book Comparing Media Systems

Download or read book Comparing Media Systems written by Daniel C. Hallin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-12 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on a survey of media institutions in eighteen West European and North American democracies, Hallin and Mancini identify the principal dimensions of variation in media systems and the political variables which have shaped their evolution. They go on to identify three major models of media system development (the Polarized Pluralist, Democratic Corporatist and Liberal models) to explain why the media have played a different role in politics in each of these systems, and to explore the forces of change that are currently transforming them. It provides a key theoretical statement about the relation between media and political systems, a key statement about the methodology of comparative analysis in political communication and a clear overview of the variety of media institutions that have developed in the West, understood within their political and historical context.

Book Women and the Reinvention of the Political

Download or read book Women and the Reinvention of the Political written by Maud Anne Bracke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in-depth study of the feminist movement that swept Italy during the "long 1970s" (1968-1983), and one of the first to use a combination of oral history interviews and newly-released archive sources to analyze the origins, themes, practices and impacts of "second-wave" feminism. While detailing the local and national contexts in which the movement operated, it sees this movement as transnationally connected. Emerging in a society that was both characterized by traditional gender roles, and a microcosm of radical political projects in the wake of 1968, the feminist movement was able to transform the lives of thousands of women, shape gender identities and roles, and provoke political and legislative change. More strongly mass-based and socially diverse than its counterparts in other Western countries at the time, its agenda encompassed questions of work, unpaid care-work, sexuality, health, reproductive rights, sexual violence, social justice, and self-expression. The case studies detailing feminist politics in three cities (Turin, Naples, and Rome) are framed in a wider analysis of the movement’s emergence, its transnational links and local specificities, and its practices and discourses. The book concludes on a series of hypotheses regarding the movement’s longer-term impacts and trajectories, taking it up to the Berlusconi era and the present day.

Download or read book La Banda del Pontino written by Emanuela Calura and published by Aletti Editore. This book was released on 2024-04-03 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this short story by Emanuela Calura fog seems to be everywhere wrapping people, objects and places, changing perspectives on life as well as people’s line of sight. In spite of this cloaking fog so typical of Ferrara’s plain suburbs, people learn how to look beyond and concoct a life so far away from the experiences they go through in their town. [...] Starting from this need to go beyond, six friends meet after many years and plan to go from Pontelagoscuro to Il Pontino by boat. Fog is much more than a symbol, it is an everchanging condition which stimulates the need for a change, it is thought-provoking and it helps their memory to go back to the childhood they had spent together in those places.

Book Cesare Zavattini Selected Writings

Download or read book Cesare Zavattini Selected Writings written by David Brancaleone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 1011 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 makes available for the first time in English thirty-nine scenarios and two treatments. Each text is preceded by an introduction, providing an essential frame of reference to make these writings entirely accessible to the reader. While nearly all these texts belong to the post-war period, including the stories for major post-war classics, there are also seven pre-war raccontini, the narrative source of Zavattini's Modernist magical realism, several fictional interviews and faux reportage, tinged with irony aimed at Hollywood, complemented by several pre-war scenarios. The book also features scenarios for Luchino Visconti's Bellissima, Alessandro Blasetti's First Communion, De Sica's The Roof and texts encompassing Zavattini's ethnographic vision, from the redactions of Italia mia, interviews for Un paese, illustrated with Paul Strand's photographs, to the scenarios for investigative documentaries, including Why?, The Mysteries of Rome, The Guinea Pig, the Free Newsreel Revolution, and the lucid Before, During After, tackling Aldo Moro's assassination by the Red Brigades. The book includes Zavattini's last word on cinema and society, the testamentary satire La veritàaaa (1982), written, directed and acted by Zavattini himself. Each text is preceded by an introduction, providing an essential frame of reference to make these writings entirely accessible to the reader. Volume 2 brings to the fore Zavattini's ever-evolving internal dialogue between diary writer, screenwriter, narrative writer, and political activist. Essential to trace the origin of Zavattini's ideas on cinema and understand his theorization of Neo-realism is the inclusion of a selection of the filmmaker's pre-war writings. Most of the book provides a substantial anthology of texts translated from Neorealismo ecc. (1979), comprising Zavattini's major essays, conference papers, unpublished production papers, interviews, and vital excerpts from his correspondence and published cinematic diary. Through translation and detailed cultural and contextual commentary, translator and editor David Brancaleone traces not only Zavattini's theory of the screen, but also his experimentation in new film practices, including the flash-film (film lampo), the inquiry film (film inchiesta), cinema as encounter (cinema d'incontro), the diary film (film diario), the confessional film (film-confessione), and the grass-roots community film (cinema insieme or cinema di tanti per tanti). Each text is preceded by an introduction, providing an essential frame of reference to make these writings entirely accessible to the reader.

Book The Cinema of Franceso Rosi

Download or read book The Cinema of Franceso Rosi written by Gaetana Marrone and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-11 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Francesco Rosi (1922-2015) occupies a unique place in postwar Italian, indeed postwar world cinema. His films show a consistent formal balance while representing historical events as social emblems that examine, shape, and reflect the national identity. This important body of work, which has made a vital mark on the works of directors like Martin Scorsese remains to be examined for the English-speaking audience. This study addresses Rosi's films as mosaics fashioned out of "clips" collected from the various stages of production, most specifically from the director's own archival materials. My approach situates each film in its artistic and cultural context, but also attends to the specific forms and ethical commitment that characterize each film"--

Book The economics of fashion and hybrid creative products

Download or read book The economics of fashion and hybrid creative products written by Enrico Cietta and published by Enrico Cietta. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars think that fashion is closer to the brink of disaster: too fast, too polluting, poorly focused on creativity and on the market, too cheap for the consumer and little profitable for small- and medium-sized companies, too unpredictable and subjective to be treated like the other industry sectors, too tangible to be regarded as a cultural product and too intangible to be considered a manufacturing product. Then, is fashion going to collapse? This book suggests another perspective and explains the economic theory of hybrid creative products, focusing on the reasons underlying that sense of an "abyss at the end of the tunnel." It rejects alarmism and tries to explain the structural changes taking place within the industry as well as the current meaning of fashion for the consumers and the market. These changes are directly associated with three crucial elements for the fashion business: time, risk, and costs. Therefore, creativity is still important, but is no longer sufficient. Commercial success largely depends on the business model of the company, i.e. on its ability to react to these changes. Fast fashion, sustainable fashion, the "see now - buy now" runaway shows, the deplorable use of child or underpaid labour can be explained in the light of this new scenario. Few economists have tried to find a new interpretation, but the theory of hybrid creative products can help us understand what happened in the past and what will happen in the future.
