Book excerpt: In this emotional gay romance, a man facing a lifechanging illness goes on a cross-country adventure with a handsome young MD and finds hope and love. Miller Sykes’s meteoric rise to award-winning chef is the stuff of culinary dreams, but it’s all crashing down around him. He’s been given a diagnosis that could cost him something even more precious than his life: his sense of taste. Rather than risk the very thing that defines him, Miller embarks on a last tour of his favorite meals while he still can. But there’s a catch: he needs a financial backer to make it happen, and he doesn’t want anyone to know he’s sick. Dr. Clancy Rhodes has two weeks to come to terms with putting aside oncology to work at his father’s thriving plastic surgery practice. When the opportunity to travel with a Michelin-starred chef presents itself, the foodie in him can’t believe it. It doesn’t hurt that Miller’s rugged good looks are exactly Clancy’s cup of joe. As Clancy and Miller travel from coast to coast and indulge in everything from dive bars to the most decadent of culinary experiences, they’re suddenly sharing a lot more than delicious meals. Sparks fly as they bond over their love of flavors and the pressures of great expectations. But when Miller’s health takes a turn for the worse, Clancy must convince him he’s more—so much more—than just his taste buds. And that together, they can win a battle that once seemed hopeless.

Book excerpt: To the hungry He says, "Come and dine!" "Come and Dine with Me" relates the personal experiences of the author and how the Lord has worked in those events to bring her out triumphantly. Have you been deserted by your spouse, betrayed, sexually abused, or rejected by loved ones? Maybe you surprised a robber who then tried to kill you. Or perhaps you have been attacked by demonic spirits trying to take your life. Brenda McGibboney has experienced all these tragedies, but through it all the Lord Jesus was with her to bring her out victoriously. Without a doubt He can do the same for you! When you go through trials, whether natural or spiritual, it is the power of Jesus Christ working in you to bring you through victoriously. Jesus has already experienced the things you have endured, yet He was without sin (Isa. 53:3-5). Since Jesus, both naturally and spiritually, knows about this life and has all power in His hands, why not listen to His counsel and allow Him to impart His life to you? "Come and Dine with Me" is meant to help you cultivate a closer and more vibrant love relationship with Jesus by allowing Him to work in and thorough your life. He will give hope to all who put their trust in Him through faith (Eph. 2:8-10). ""Come and Dine with Me" is a refreshing look into the experiences of a saint and faithful member of our local church. It will make you shout, cry, and thank God for His grace. Enjoy the meal." -Dr. Herman G. Platt, Pastor, Wells Memorial Church of God in Christ "I have known Brenda McGibboney for over a decade as a fellow church member, prayer partner, and friend. I believe that the life experiences that Brenda has encountered qualify her to write with sincerity and authenticity." -Goldie Frinks Wells, Ed.D. "The life lessons in "Come and Dine with Me" have a place in devotional reading for every seeker. Since every day brings new challenges, these scripturally based devotional readings are a valuable prayer-life menu." -Dr. Adrienne Israel BRENDA J. LEFFALL-McGIBBONEY is a widow, mother of two children, and grandmother of two wonderful grandchildren. Brenda is a native of Dallas, Texas. She has lived in other areas of the United States, but since 1989 has made Greensboro, North Carolina, her home. She has recently retired as a social worker dealing with families in crises. Book Don t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table

Download or read book Don t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table written by Louie Giglio and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louie Giglio helps you find encouragement, hope, and strength in the midst of any valley as you reject the enemy voices of fear, rage, lust, insecurity, anxiety, despair, temptation, or defeat. Scripture is clear: the Enemy is a liar who will stop at nothing to tempt you into poor decisions and self-defeating mindsets, making you feel afraid, angry, anxious, or defeated. It is all too easy for Satan to weasel his way into a seat at the table intended for only you and your King. But you can fight back. Don't Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table outlines the ways to overcome those lies so you can find peace and security in any challenging circumstance or situation. With the same bold, exciting approach to Scripture as employed in Goliath Must Fall and his other previous works, pastor Louie Giglio examines Psalm 23 in fresh ways, highlighting verse 5: "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies." You can find freedom from insecurity, temptation, and defeat--if you allow Jesus, the Shepherd, to lead the battle for your mind and heart. This spiritual warfare book for those who are leery of spiritual warfare books will resonate with Louie's core Passion tribe as well as with Christians of all ages who want to live a triumphant life in God.

Book The Hopeless University

  • Author : Richard Hall
  • Publisher : Mayflybooks/Ephemera
  • Release : 2021-05-14

Download or read book The Hopeless University written by Richard Hall and published by Mayflybooks/Ephemera. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hegemonic University represented in the institutions of the global North is an increasingly hopeless place. Defined against value and generation of surpluses, the University is a critical node in the social metabolic control of capital. As such, it acts to deny human agency and autonomy, forms of mutuality, and alternative life worlds, precisely because it serves to reproduce capitalist social relations. These relations foreclose upon the idea that humans might make their own history, and in fact we have been told that we are at the end of history. Here, the idea that the University exists in a closed system designed to mitigate economic risk, generates structures that constantly restructure intellectual work through joint ventures; cultures that act pathologically to dehumanise those who work in the institution; and practices that are imposed methodologically to limit the horizon of intellectual possibility. However, the intersection of crises of political economy, black and indigenous lives, climate and environment, and epidemiology, have exposed the fraud at the heart of narratives of the end of History. A range of intersecting struggles have exposed the fraud of the transhistorical inevitability that capitalism will be our operating system. In spite of the fragility of capital's social metabolic control, the University remains committed to repurposing all of social life in the name of value, by working towards employability, entrepreneurship, excellence, impact and satisfaction. The University is a critical node in the denial of History, precisely because it provides a constant funnelling of individuals into a normalised existence framed by debt and work. Faced by the realities and lived experiences of intersecting crises, the University is revealed as hopeless, because: first, it has become a place that has no socially-useful role beyond the reproduction of capital, and has become an anti-human project devoid of hope; and second, it is unable to respond meaningfully with crises that erupt from the contradictions of capital. Thus. in its maintenance of business-as-usual, the University remains shaped as a tactical response to these contradictions.

Book Food and God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joel R. Soza
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2009-05-13
  • ISBN : 1498274803
  • Pages : 76 pages

Download or read book Food and God written by Joel R. Soza and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-13 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central thesis of this book is that Western culture, and American culture in particular, needs an immediate change with regard to food and eating. Western over-indulgence is exacerbated by hunger and deprivation in the world. Learning to think theologically, and not just medically or psychologically, about one's eating habits will lead to positive personal and communal changes. In Food and God, Joel Soza offers readers a deeper understanding of Christian faith, one that will help them learn to think of eating as not merely a physical act, but as a spiritual exercise. Readers will become more aware of world need and preference for others while also learning how to improve their own health, control their own weight, and develop greater spiritual awareness and sensitivity in the daily and routine activity of eating. This book evaluates both Old and New Testaments, as well as some theology in the history of the Church, to arrive at an understanding of how one should think about food and eating in relationship to God and the world. The reader will learn of the key role food plays in the biblical creation and temptation narratives. They will learn of the enormous labor that went into food preparation in the ancient world, and what sages have had to say about food indulgence throughout time and many cultures. Finally, readers will encounter Jesus's invitation to think about food in spiritual ways, gaining an understanding as to what it means that Christianity is a movement with table fellowship at the forefront of its faith expression.
