Book Combined Modality Therapy of Gastrointestinal Tract Cancer

Download or read book Combined Modality Therapy of Gastrointestinal Tract Cancer written by Peter Schlag and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern surgical oncology is characterized by multimodal therapy. In recent years numerous therapeutic approaches of pre-, peri-, intra-and postoperative treatment have been in vestigated with regard to their use in combination with surgi cal intervention. It now is time to analyze and to define the state of our knowledge. For tumors of the gastrointestinal tract there are several encouraging therapeutic approaches, such as preop erative chemotherapy in esophageal and perioperative chemotherapy in colon cancer. For some special tumors, like anal carcinoma, we have clearly defined combined therapies which even now must be viewed as standard treatment. It is also time to demonstrate the results of several clini cal studies that have been conducted within the last few years that combined surgical efforts with pre- or postinter ventional chemotherapy or radiotherapy. It is necessary to evaluate whether these trials contribute to progress in onco logical therapy. The editors of this volume - surgeons at the university hospitals of Heidelberg and Zurich - must be given the mer it of achieving these goals. It was especially appropriate for the Department of Surgery in Heidelberg, in close coopera tion with the Comprehensive Cancer Center Heidelberg/ Mannheim, to prepare a review of our present knowledge of surgical oncology as it is in the tradition of attempting to combine different therapeutic approaches to cancer therapy.

Book Combined Modality Therapy of Central Nervous System Tumors

Download or read book Combined Modality Therapy of Central Nervous System Tumors written by Zbigniew Petrovich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Cancer Society anticipates that 16,500 patients will be diagnosed with primary malignant tumors of the central nervous system in 2000, with about 200,000 individuals presenting with brain metastases. The advances in the treatment of solid tumors have contributed significantly to the major increase in metastatic cancers to the brain. Of the primary malignant tumors of the brain, more than 50% are high-grade gliomas; the incidence has been increasing among older patients over the past decade. Major developments in new technologies in the treatment of primary brain tumors as well as metastatic disease are covered in depth. Even though management is difficult, advances are being made. This book is a concerted effort to present data regarding basic science research efforts alongside their translation into clinical practice using combined, integrated multimodal programs of treatment. Progress has been made, but innovatice approaches need to be pursued.

Book Cancer Chemotherapy by Infusion

Download or read book Cancer Chemotherapy by Infusion written by J.J. Lokich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemotherapy for-cancer is in a state of evolution. Because some cancers can now be cured with chemotherapy as a singular modality, this therapy can no longer be viewed as simply a palliative contribution. Chemotherapy has assumed an important role as an adjuvant to other modalities, including both surgery and radiation therapy. For some tumors, the primary application of chemotherapy in a combined modality approach to curative therapy has resulted in the application of less radical surgery while achieving substantial of relatively rare tumors such as cure rates. Nonetheless, with the exception childhood tumors, hematologic malignancies, and testicular cancer, the effec tiveness of chemotherapy in most tumors is severely limited. At the cellular level, greater understanding of the specific mechanism of tumor cell killing and of the phenomenon of drug resistance are elusive, critical ingredients in the improvement of effectiveness in cancer chemotherapy. Prolonging the exposure time of the tumor cell to drugs is a concept that was addressed in the early phases of the development of chemotherapy. How ever, technological limitations inhibited the broader application of chemother apy by infusion until recent years. Also, the convenience of intermittent ther apy on an outpatient basis, with the predominant theory of drug effect based on a dose response as well as the proven effectiveness of this schedule in some tumors, has slowed the process of subjecting infusion chemotherapy to the rigors of clinical trials.

Book Clinical Applications of Continuous Infusion Chemotherapy and Concomitant Radiation Therapy

Download or read book Clinical Applications of Continuous Infusion Chemotherapy and Concomitant Radiation Therapy written by C. Julian Rosenthal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first conference on concomitant infusion chemotherapy and radia tion therapy was organized with the intention of bringing together some of the investigators who have tested, during the last few years, the hypo thesis that continuous infusion chemotherapy could modulate the cytotoxic effect of radiation therapy to the point of having a strongly additive, if not synergistic activity on certain malignant tumors. This volume represents the detailed proceedings of this conference presented in a way that offers the reader a review of the on-going re search in the field. We have stressed a number of subjects from basic biologic research and influence of cell kinetics to the practical methods of drug delivery systems and early clinical experiences. The rationale for this new type of combined modality therapy has been presented by some of its pioneers. Early clinical investigations as well as the preliminary data of many that have not yet completely matured have also been included. The reader should look at these data with some reser vations. Ultimately, these results must be confirmed by larger prospective randomized studies with proper controls before becoming accepted as the treatment of choice in locally advanced tumors.
