Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Figure Skating Arranged for Use on the Ice: With Over Six Hundred Diagrams and Illustrations, and Suggestions for Nearly Ten Thousand Figures Skating Club - American champion, 1896 - who is al ways on his balance, who knows just what each part Of his body is contributing, and ought to contribute, to the prosperity of the figure he is Skating, whose movements are easy, graceful, steady - not vigorous, though under perfect control - and when one sees a skater like Mr. Bacon of the Cambridge Skating Club - American cham pion, 1893 - who in his field skating is almost never on his balance, whose movements are vigorous and rapid, whose arms and unemployed leg swing with rhythmic precision, who can Spin like a top and fly like a bird, yet can hardly tell you how he does it all - though he, too, has perfect control of his edge - one sees the balance Style and the swing style admirably adapted to the American conditions of small curve skating. Few can attain the success of these proficients, but both will tell you, which ever style you prefer, that the quickest and surest road to it is to begin by acquiring a good balance. Excerpt: ...in time with the caller, and of nothing else. NotaBenc. To recapitulate--let every other skater in a combined figure, not being a member of the first pair, remember (i) that his first and most important duty is to watch the caller; (2) that his next most important duty is to watch all the other skaters, so that he skates in such relationship to them and to the caller, that the general symmetry or "squareness" of the figure is maintained (see Fig. 27); (3) that his last and least important duty is to keep time with his partner, never skating opposite to him unless the latter is skating in his proper position as regards the other skaters, i.e. is keeping "square" with the others in accordance with Fig. 27. Other typical calls belonging to sub-division (a) of Group 1 must next be considered. Inside Twice Back--and Inside Forward.--This is a very difficult call, and is mentioned here because the terms used must be understood, and because it is the counterpart of " twice back--and forward," the skaters starting with the inside, instead of the outside edge forwards. An inside forward three is first skated, and that this should be taken gracefully, it is better (although not essential) that the skaters should approach the centre on either the inside edge forwards or outside edge backwards. The caller would, therefore, have first to give a call which would bring up the skater on one of these edges. The inside forward turn must be started to the right of the centre, if the skater is on the right foot, and when it is completed, the left foot must be put down on the inside edge backwards, and this stroke can only be made gracefully if the foot is placed exactly behind its fellow. The succeeding stroke on to the second...

Excerpt: ... chapter vi Eights--Qs--Reverse Qs. "vt ow that the edges, changes, turns, Mohawks, and- Choctaws have all been spoken of, there remain to consider (apart from Combined Skating) only the possible combinations of these, and their adaptation to the form of eights or modified eights, which in their simplest form, as has been mentioned, are complete circles of edges, outside or inside, skated on alternate feet, each of which starts from and again arrives at the centre. But into these edges can be worked turns or combinations of turns which are, so to speak, incidental to these simple complete circles, and occur either in the course of them or at the centre itself. Each circle of the eight goes on its way, starting from and arriving at the centre, and into its course are interpolated turns, brackets or Mohawks, or at the centre are placed rockers, counters, or Choctaws. Theoretically it is possible to skate any number of turns during the course of the circle; but three turns to each circle are the most that can be skated with any profit. One Turn to a Centre The simplest eight, after the edges have been mastered, is the forward turn to a centre, beginning on outside or inside edges. The line diagram (Fig. 9) shows the map of the figure if skated with ideal precision. The letters Bop, Kip, Bob, Bib in this and all diagrams denote right outside forward, right inside forward, right outside back, right inside back; while Lop, LiF, Lob, Lib, denote the same edges on the left foot. The arrows show the direction of curve. Outside Forward Turn The skater in all eights, and in every combined figure (unless otherwise directed) stands a little way back from his centre, and takes up his edge close to the centre, with the centre on the inside of his curve....

Book excerpt: Americans ought to be the greatest skaters in the world. They are athletic people, lovers of outdoor sports and their country is situated in the largest tract of the North Temperate zone occupied by any one nation in the world. In this zone is found sufficient cold weather to produce a great deal of natural ice and at the same time such agreeable weather as to render the use of that ice, for sport, attractive and exhilarating. In this respect the United States is more fortunately situated than any of the countries of northern Europe. This little book is intended as a stimulus and encouragement toward ice skating among Americans. It is intended as much for women as for men. There are no physical reasons why women should not skate quite as well as men. Skating is a matter of balance and grace, not strength. Young girls often become very expert skaters, doing all the difficult feats that grown men accomplish. Up to within a few years ago, the figure skating championships of Europe were open to both men and women on equal terms. Perhaps the fact that women excelled in grace was partially responsible for the separation of the sexes in these championships. Much attention is paid in the book to the fundamental strokes, called school figures. These are the foundation of all figure skating. After they have been fully mastered the skater will probably discover a tendency to adopt an individual style and make up special figures suited to individual physical or temperamental characteristics. One skater, for instance, will especially enjoy spins and whirls; another will incline toward big, showy spirals; another will develop individual skill in two-foot movements such as grapevines, etc. Skating, like every other fine sport, becomes an expression of individuality. The foundation rules must first be learned, after which personal choice will direct the skater toward special figures most to his or her liking. Skating is a sport for everybody--girls and boys, young people and old people. It can be started in extreme childhood and enjoyed far into old age. It can be a fast, strenuous exercise or a gentle enjoyment of poetic motion. It stimulates health, prompts to wholesome life out of doors, is a social diversion and, in its best development, requires considerable mental application. In every respect it is an ideal sport for people of any nation, especially those situated where natural ice is found or artificial ice is provided.
