Book excerpt: Time-dependent methods of analysis for colums, stiffened and unstiffened plates, and torsional members have been developed and programmed for the IBM 709 digital computer. The important material behaviors, i.e., soaking at temperatures, elastic and plastic strain, creep and residual stress and strain under varying temperature inputs, can be accounted for in the digital solutions. Two illustrative examples for obtaining allowable stresses are shown; the first for a stable structure in combined tensile and bending and the second for a column subjected to time-dependent displacements due to creep. These two examples are sufficiently typical to demonstrate the applicability of the procedures developed in this report or other procedures which give the stress-strain-deflection time history of a structure.

Book excerpt: This report describes investigations performed to determine experimentally the validity of the time-independent aspects of a time-dependent elasto-plastic stress and strain analysis method for structures exposed to complex load and two-dimensional elevated temperature environments. Experiments, consisting of tests of long flat plates subjected to uniaxial loads and temperatures which varied in two directions, are described. These were specificially designed to evaluate the accuracy of the analysis method. Magnitude and duration of the test variables were such that the strains induced by loading were in the plastic range and appreciable thermal stress systems were induced. Significant creep strains were eliminated by short-time continuous loading. Experimental strains were compared with analytical strains calculated for conditions indentical with the tests. Within the range of test parameters selected, the degree of correlation achieved indicates verification of the time-independent portion of the analysis method.

An experiment specifically designed to evaluate the accuracy of the theoretical method is presented. This consisted of a test of a long flat plate subjected to step functions of load randomly combined with several two-dimensional temperature distributions. Magnitude and duration of the test variables were such that plasticity, creep and appreciable thermal stress systems were introduced. Comparisons are made of experimental total strains with analytical total strains calculated for conditions identical with the test. The degree of correlation achieved indicates verification of the analysis method within the range of test parameters selected.
