Book Combination of CDF and D0 Results on the Mass of the Top Quark Using Up to 5 8 fb 1 of Data

Download or read book Combination of CDF and D0 Results on the Mass of the Top Quark Using Up to 5 8 fb 1 of Data written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We summarize the top-quark mass measurements from the CDF and D0 experiments at Fermilab. We combine published Run I (1992--1996) measurements with the most precise published and preliminary Run II (2001--present) measurements using up to 5.8 fb−1 of data, adding new analyses (the missing transverse energy plus jets analysis) and updating old ones. Taking uncertainty correlations into account, and adding in quadrature the statistical and systematic uncertainties, the resulting preliminary Tevatron average mass of the top quark is M{sub t} = 173.2 ± 0.9 GeV/c2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the top quark mass and the t{bar t} production cross section, obtained by CDF and D0 Collaborations at the Tevatron, are presented. The methodology of analyses and their underlying assumptions are summarized. The CDF and D0 top mass averages, based on H"00 pb−1 of data collected by each experiment in Run-I, and obtained from a set of selected measurements in several channels are M{sub t} = 176:0 ± 4:0(stat) ± 5:1(syst) GeV/c{sup 2} and M{sub t} = 172:1 ± 5:2(stat) ± 4:9(syst) GeV/c{sup 2}, respectively. The combined Tevatron top quark mass is M{sub t} = 174:3 ±3:2(stat) ±4:0(syst) GeV/c}sup 2}, where the correlations between CDF and D0 averages were taken into account. The CDF measurement of the t{bar t} cross section (assuming M{sub t} = 175 GeV/c{sup 2}) is [sigma]{sub tt} = 7.6{sup 1.8}{sub 1.5} pb, and the D0 value (assuming M{sub t} = 172.1 GeV/c{sup 2}) is [sigma]{sub tt} = 5:9 ± 1:7 pb. In anticipation of the much increased statistics in Run-II, the fact that top quark physics is one of the best windows to new physics beyond the Standard Model is emphasized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before any kind of new physics discovery could be made at the LHC, a precise understanding and measurement of the Standard Model of particle physics' processes was necessary. The book provides an introduction to top quark production in the context of the Standard Model and presents two such precise measurements of the production of top quark pairs in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV that were observed with the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC. The presented measurements focus on events with one charged lepton, missing transverse energy and jets. Using novel and advanced analysis techniques as well as a good understanding of the detector, they constitute the most precise measurements of the quantity at that time.

Book Statistical Methods for Data Analysis

Download or read book Statistical Methods for Data Analysis written by Luca Lista and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition expands on the original material. Large portions of the text have been reviewed and clarified. More emphasis is devoted to machine learning including more modern concepts and examples. This book provides the reader with the main concepts and tools needed to perform statistical analyses of experimental data, in particular in the field of high-energy physics (HEP). It starts with an introduction to probability theory and basic statistics, mainly intended as a refresher from readers’ advanced undergraduate studies, but also to help them clearly distinguish between the Frequentist and Bayesian approaches and interpretations in subsequent applications. Following, the author discusses Monte Carlo methods with emphasis on techniques like Markov Chain Monte Carlo, and the combination of measurements, introducing the best linear unbiased estimator. More advanced concepts and applications are gradually presented, including unfolding and regularization procedures, culminating in the chapter devoted to discoveries and upper limits. The reader learns through many applications in HEP where the hypothesis testing plays a major role and calculations of look-elsewhere effect are also presented. Many worked-out examples help newcomers to the field and graduate students alike understand the pitfalls involved in applying theoretical concepts to actual data.

Book Combining the Top Quark Mass Results for Run 1 from CDF and D Zero

Download or read book Combining the Top Quark Mass Results for Run 1 from CDF and D Zero written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CDF and D0 have published or submitted for publication eleven papers [1-11] that include direct experimental measurements of the top quark mass. Each experiment has found that the lepton+jets channel [1,5,6,9,10,11,12] gives the most precise result. However, CDF and D0 have also measured the top quark mass in other decay topologies. Both D0 [2,6] and CDF [3,4] have published additional results in the dilepton channels, while CDF [8] has published a result in the all-hadronic channel. Our aim in this note is to reduce the overall uncertainty on the top quark mass measurement by combining the most recent and final of these measurements [1,2,3,7,8]. This note combines the mass from the five separate measurements taking into account the statistical and systematic uncertainties as well as the correlations in the systematic uncertainties. The final Tevatron top mass based on Run 1 data is m{sub t} = 174.3 " 3.2(stat) " 4.0(syst) GeV/c2. Combining the statistical and systematic uncertainties, the top mass is m{sub t} = 174.3 " 5.1 GeV/c2.

Book Higgs Potential and Naturalness After the Higgs Discovery

Download or read book Higgs Potential and Naturalness After the Higgs Discovery written by Yuta Hamada and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the theoretical foundation of the Standard Model valid up to the Planck scale, based on the current experimental facts from the Large Hadron Collider. The thesis consists of two themes: (1) to open up a new window of the Higgs inflation scenario, and (2) to explore a new solution to the naturalness problem in particle physics. In the first area, on the Higgs inflation scenario, the author successfully improves a large value problem on a coupling constant relevant to the Higgs mass in the Standard Model, in which the coupling value of the order of 105 predicted in a conventional scenario is reduced to the order of 10. This result makes the Higgs inflation more attractive because the small value of coupling is natural in the context of ultraviolet completion such as string theory. In the second area, the author provides a new answer to the naturalness problem, of why the cosmological constant and the Higgs mass are extremely small compared with the Planck scale. Based on the baby universe theory originally proposed by Coleman, the smallness of those quantities is successfully explained without introducing any additional new particles relevant at the TeV energy scale.

Book Constraining Supersymmetric Models

Download or read book Constraining Supersymmetric Models written by Lisa Zeune and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis analyses how supersymmetric (SUSY) extensions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics can be constrained using information from Higgs physics, electroweak precision observables and direct searches for new particles. Direct searches for SUSY particles at the LHC have not resulted in any signal so far, and limits on the SUSY parameter space have been set. Measurements of the properties of the observed Higgs boson at 125 GeV as well as of the W boson mass can provide valuable indirect constraints, supplementing the ones from direct searches. Precise calculations are performed for Higgs decays and electroweak precision observables within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model and the next to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. Furthermore, a method is presented to reinterpret the LHC limits from direct SUSY searches in more realistic SUSY scenarios. The phenomenological consequences of those results are thoroughly analysed.

Book Electroweak Physics at LEP and LHC

Download or read book Electroweak Physics at LEP and LHC written by Arno Straessner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During more than 10 years, from 1989 until 2000, the LEP accelerator and the four LEP experiments, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have taken data for a large amount of measurements at the frontier of particle physics. The main outcome is a thorough and successful test of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions. Mass and width of the Z and W bosons were measured precisely, as well as the Z and photon couplings to fermions and the couplings among gauge bosons. The rst part of this work will describe the most important physics results of the LEP experiments. Emphasis is put on the properties of the W boson, which was my main research eld at LEP. Especially the precise determination of its mass and its couplings to the other gauge bosons will be described. Details on physics effects like Colour Reconnection and Bose-Einstein Correlations in W-pair events shall be discussed as well. A conclusive summary of the current electroweak measurements, including low-energy results, as the pillars of possible future ndings will be given. The important contributions from Tevatron, like the measurement of the top quark and W mass, will round up the present day picture of electroweak particle physics. This is an open access book.

Book Recent Results in the Top Quark Sector from the D0 Experiment

Download or read book Recent Results in the Top Quark Sector from the D0 Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these proceedings, I review recent measurements in the top quark sector in pp-bar collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 1.96 TeV in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider using the D0 detector. I will present the differential measurement of the tt-bar production cross section and the Tevatron combination of inclusive tt-bar cross section measurements; the first evidence of the production of single top quarks in the s-channel by D0 and the observation in combination with CDF. Furthermore, I will review the measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in tt-bar events, and conclude with the world's most precise single measurement of the top quark mass, which is a fundamental parameter of the standard model, and present the Tevatron combination, which is the world's most precise determination of the top quark mass, with a relative precision of 0.37%.
