Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Book Preventing and Reducing Underage Drinking

Download or read book Preventing and Reducing Underage Drinking written by Nathaniel P. Marquis and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the Surgeon General's call to action to prevent and reduce underage drinking, to focus national attention on this enduring problem and on new, disturbing research which indicates that the developing adolescent brain may be particularly susceptible to long-term negative consequences from alcohol use. Alcohol is the most widely used substance of abuse among America's youth. A higher percentage of young people between the ages of 12 and 20 use alcohol than use tobacco or illicit drugs. Underage drinking also creates secondhand effects for others, drinkers and nondrinkers alike, including car crashes from drunk driving, that put every child at risk. Thus, underage alcohol consumption is a major societal problem with enormous health and safety consequences and will demand the nation's attention and committed efforts to solve.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Adolescent Substance Abuse

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Adolescent Substance Abuse written by Robert A. Zucker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent substance abuse is the nation's #1 public health problem. It originates out of a developmental era where experimentation with the world is increasingly taking place, and where major changes in physical self and social relationships are taking place. These changes cannot be understood by any one discipline nor can they be described by focusing only on the behavioral and social problems of this age period, the characteristics of normal development, or the pharmacology and addictive potential of specific drugs. They require knowledge of the brain's systems of reward and control, genetics, psychopharmacology, personality, child development, psychopathology, family dynamics, peer group relationships, culture, social policy, and more. Drawing on the expertise of the leading researchers in this field, this Handbook provides the most comprehensive summarization of current knowledge about adolescent substance abuse. The Handbook is organized into eight sections covering the literature on the developmental context of this life period, the epidemiology of adolescent use and abuse, similarities and differences in use, addictive potential, and consequences of use for different drugs; etiology and course as characterized at different levels of mechanistic analysis ranging from the genetic and neural to the behavioural and social. Two sections cover the clinical ramifications of abuse, and prevention and intervention strategies to most effectively deal with these problems. The Handbook's last section addresses the role of social policy in framing the problem, in addressing it, and explores its potential role in alleviating it.

Book Preventing Underage Drinking

Download or read book Preventing Underage Drinking written by United States. Congress. House. Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the testimony of Surgeon General Antonia Novello of the U.S. Public Health Service, and related materials from a congressional hearing examining underage drinking. In her opening statement, Chairwoman Patricia Schroeder reviews the incidence of underage drinking and notes the role of the advertising industry in promoting drinking. Surgeon General Novello's testimony notes the pervasiveness of underage drinking and discusses the problems created by exposing adolescents to mixed messages on drinking. Novello contrasts the health message that the use of alcohol by young people can lead to serious health consequences with the advertising messages that promote drinking. She examines the problem of labeling that makes it difficult to distinguish alcoholic from nonalcoholic beverages on store shelves; designated drivers, and teenagers who ride with drinking drivers; and adolescents' lack of knowledge about alcohol. Actions taken by the Surgeon General to combat the problem of underage drinking are reviewed, and the problems encountered in enforcing the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 are discussed. Novello describes actions taken by individual states to prevent underage drinking. The role of advertising in promoting underage drinking is emphasized throughout the document. Included in the document are a fact sheet on preventing underage drinking; the prepared statement of Michael Kavanaugh, sheriff of Roanoke County, Virginia; comments by John Calfee, associate professor of Marketing, School of Management, Boston University; and a report from the Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Book Alcohol Use Among Adolescents

Download or read book Alcohol Use Among Adolescents written by Michael Windle and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1999-06-25 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent alcohol use is prominent among today′s teens and has elicited rising concerns among parents, health practitioners, social policymakers, and the public at large. Yet there is an absence of a relatively concise book that summarizes and integrates existing knowledge on the various facets of adolescent alcohol use. This book attempts to fill this void by integrating research from the multiple fields of study (e.g., prevalence of use), describing measurement approaches (e.g., survey and clinical diagnostic), reviewing risk and protective factors, reporting on findings from prominent prevention and treatment studies, and suggesting future research directions. The coverage is intended to examine issues relevant to etiology, developmental courses, and prevention and treatment, as well as to identify future research directions.

Book Upstream

  • Author : Dan Heath
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2020-03-03
  • ISBN : 1982134747
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Upstream written by Dan Heath and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall Street Journal Bestseller New York Times bestselling author Dan Heath explores how to prevent problems before they happen, drawing on insights from hundreds of interviews with unconventional problem solvers. So often in life, we get stuck in a cycle of response. We put out fires. We deal with emergencies. We stay downstream, handling one problem after another, but we never make our way upstream to fix the systems that caused the problems. Cops chase robbers, doctors treat patients with chronic illnesses, and call-center reps address customer complaints. But many crimes, chronic illnesses, and customer complaints are preventable. So why do our efforts skew so heavily toward reaction rather than prevention? Upstream probes the psychological forces that push us downstream—including “problem blindness,” which can leave us oblivious to serious problems in our midst. And Heath introduces us to the thinkers who have overcome these obstacles and scored massive victories by switching to an upstream mindset. One online travel website prevented twenty million customer service calls every year by making some simple tweaks to its booking system. A major urban school district cut its dropout rate in half after it figured out that it could predict which students would drop out—as early as the ninth grade. A European nation almost eliminated teenage alcohol and drug abuse by deliberately changing the nation’s culture. And one EMS system accelerated the emergency-response time of its ambulances by using data to predict where 911 calls would emerge—and forward-deploying its ambulances to stand by in those areas. Upstream delivers practical solutions for preventing problems rather than reacting to them. How many problems in our lives and in society are we tolerating simply because we’ve forgotten that we can fix them?
