Book Scenarios and Responses to Future Deep Oil Spills

Download or read book Scenarios and Responses to Future Deep Oil Spills written by Steven A. Murawski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has often been said that generals prepare for the next war by re-fighting the last. The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill was unlike any previous – an underwater well blowout 1,500 meters deep. Much has been learned in the wake of DWH and these lessons should in turn be applied to both similar oil spill scenarios and those arising from “frontier” explorations by the marine oil industry. The next deep oil well blowout may be at 3,000 meters or even deeper. This volume summarizes regional (Gulf of Mexico) and global megatrends in marine oil exploration and production. Research in a number of key areas including the behavior of oil and gas under extreme pressure, impacts on biological resources of the deep sea, and the fate of oil and gas released in spills is synthesized. A number of deep oil spills are simulated with detailed computer models, and the likely effects of the spills and potential mitigation measures used to combat them are compared. Recommended changes in policies governing marine oil exploration and development are proposed, as well as additional research to close critical and emerging knowledge gaps. This volume synthesizes state-of-the-art research in deep oil spill behavior and response. It is thus relevant for government and industry oil spill responders, policy formulators and implementers, and academics and students desiring an in-depth and balanced overview of key issues and uncertainties surrounding the quest for deep oil and potential impacts on the environment.

Book Deep Water

Download or read book Deep Water written by United States. National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis: On April 20, 2010, the Macondo well blew out, costing the lives of 11 men, and beginning a catastrophe that sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and spilled over 4 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The spill disrupted an entire region's economy, damaged fisheries and critical habitats, and brought vividly to light the risks of deepwater drilling for oil and gas-the latest frontier in the national energy supply. Soon after, President Barack Obama appointed a seven-member Commission to investigate the disaster, analyze its causes and effects, and recommend the actions necessary to minimize such risks in the future. The Commission's report offers the American public and policymakers alike the fullest account available of what happened in the Gulf and why, and proposes actions-changes in company behavior, reform of government oversight, and investments in research and technology-required as industry moves forward to meet the nation's energy needs. Complementary reports, staff background papers, hearing records, and other materials produced by the Commission are available at www.oilspillcommission.gov.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The April 20, 2010, explosion of the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig led to the largest oil spill in U.S. waters. It is estimated that the deepwater well ultimately released (over 84 days) over 200 million gallons of crude oil. Although decreasing amounts of oil were observed on the ocean surface following the well¿s containment on July 15, 2010, oil spill response officials and researchers have found oil in other places. A pressing question is where did the oil go? Contents of this report: (1) Intro.; (2) Factors that Impact an Oil Spill¿s Fate; (3) The Federal Government¿s Oil Budget Estimates; (4) Where is the Oil That Remains in the Gulf?; (5) Conclusions; (6) Satellite Images of Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Book An Ecosystem Services Approach to Assessing the Impacts of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico

Download or read book An Ecosystem Services Approach to Assessing the Impacts of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Gulf of Mexico recovers from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, natural resource managers face the challenge of understanding the impacts of the spill and setting priorities for restoration work. The full value of losses resulting from the spill cannot be captured, however, without consideration of changes in ecosystem services-the benefits delivered to society through natural processes. An Ecosystem Services Approach to Assessing the Impacts of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico discusses the benefits and challenges associated with using an ecosystem services approach to damage assessment, describing potential impacts of response technologies, exploring the role of resilience, and offering suggestions for areas of future research. This report illustrates how this approach might be applied to coastal wetlands, fisheries, marine mammals, and the deep sea-each of which provide key ecosystem services in the Gulf-and identifies substantial differences among these case studies. The report also discusses the suite of technologies used in the spill response, including burning, skimming, and chemical dispersants, and their possible long-term impacts on ecosystem services.

Book excerpt: Since the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill occurred in April of last year, there has been an onslaught of litigation, including claims by individuals, businesses, and local governments; as well as wrongful death actions brought by the families of the lost platform workers. The economic and environmental impact of the Gulf Coast oil disaster has been wide in scope and affected many. Even now, more than a year later, it is difficult to tell what the ultimate consequences will be. How will the spill impact the future of oil drilling? Has the Gulf Coast Claims Facility been successful thus far? What can attorneys do to better assist their clients in pending litigation? The Ongoing Legal Effects of the BP Oil Spill provides feedback from some of the nations leading legal minds on handling the unique aspects of spill litigation and taking a boots-on-the-ground approach with clients. These experts also discuss parallels between the Exxon Valdez spill and the Deepwater Horizon disaster, and speculate on how a recurrence might be avoided in the future. This report offers readers an on-the-spot look at the issue as it continues to unfold.

Book BP Oil Spill Documenting the Crisis in US Gulf Coast

Download or read book BP Oil Spill Documenting the Crisis in US Gulf Coast written by Christopher Adekoya and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Environmental Policy, , course: Environmental Policy/Environmental Economics/Environmental Education, language: English, abstract: The damaged Deep-water Horizon rig not only led to deaths in a workplace, it exposed the failure of a company that probably put profits before people. The unconscionable decisions of a multinational corporation in oil and gas prospecting, its contractors and associated partners led to the deaths of innocent workers. The analysis of events surrounding the accidental explosion in the Gulf of Mexico on the Deep-water Horizon rig added new knowledge to the understanding of risk involved in prospecting for oil and gas in deep and shallow water. BP OIL SPILL: Documenting the Crisis in US Gulf Coast is a piece of this knowledge.
