Book New Strategies to Combat Long term Unemployment in Belgium Denmark and the United Kingdom

Download or read book New Strategies to Combat Long term Unemployment in Belgium Denmark and the United Kingdom written by Frederik Geers and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report provides information to policy makers, practitioners, and researchers on the new strategies and measures adopted in Belgium, Denmark, and the United Kingdom to combat long-term unemployment. It begins with a summary of strategies and measures adopted in each of the three countries. Each country report highlights the following aspects: scope and characteristics of the unemployment problem; institutional structures at national, regional, and local levels; strategies used to combat long-term unemployment, including programs and pedagogical methods in education, training, and vocational guidance; financing mechanisms; and new forms of cooperation among training organizations and among decision makers in the implementation of new strategies. As far as possible, each report includes results from the programs, although a number of them are still in progress. The second part of the document is a comparative table of key issues, including the following: unemployment rate; evolution of long-term unemployment; duration of unemployment benefit; level of unemployment benefit; government spending on labor market policies; vocational guidance; specific training initiatives; supportive actions for individuals; financing mechanisms; and collaboration types. A final section of observations and comments focuses on general and specific features. (YLB)

  • Author : Francesca Fazio
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing

Download or read book Tackling Youth Unemployment written by Francesca Fazio and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth have always had higher unemployment rates – about twice or more than the average – as they are usually the last to be hired in an expansion and the first to be let go in a recession. In addition, young people engage in extensive job searching in their early years, and this can imply considerable job churning as both youth and employers look for a good match. This highlights the importance of facilitating the school-to-work transition and having early interventions to assist such youth before negative conditions set in. It also highlights the potential importance of determining those young people most “at risk” of long-term unemployment, and of targeting or streaming them into programmes that will yield the largest incremental net benefits given their characteristics. Unemployed youth without previous work experience often are not eligible for unemployment insurance benefits when they first enter the labour market. When they do receive job search assistance, they often face a bewildering array of programmes that are available to assist them, often with little guidance to help them select the programs that best meet their needs. Consequently, ensuring that today’s youth do not become a “lost generation” is an urgent matter. George Bernard Shaw once said that it is too bad that “youth is wasted on the young”, implying that youth do not realize the opportunities they have as youth and only see them as they get older. There is a danger, however, that many of today’s youth may be never have those opportunities and hence not even see them with hindsight. This book and others in the ADAPT Labour Studies Book-Series are intended to deal with these challenges, to make sure that youth is not wasted on the young.

Book The Unemployment Trap

Download or read book The Unemployment Trap written by Mateo Alaluf and published by Manhattan Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report defines the social exclusion process by examining long-term unemployment and educational deficiencies in Europe and assessing the scope and effectiveness of the steps taken by the governments concerned to deal with the problem. Chapter I looks at education and prolonged unemployment in six countries that reflect the range of European experience--Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Chapter II considers the countries individually from the point of view both of the extent of long-term unemployment and of the steps taken to limit its effects. Chapter III outlines the main features of long-term unemployment, while chapter IV reviews the types of measures introduced in the different countries and assesses the impact of national policies. Chapter V looks at the problems associated with lack of education and training and with illiteracy, chapter VI sets the problems in the context of the labor market, and chapter VII in that of economic policy options. The final chapter discusses the relationship between educational deficiencies and long-term unemployment. The aim is to identify both the ways in which social exclusion operates and the role of public policy in this area. (Contains 50 references.) (YLB)
