Book A Global Alliance Against Forced Labour

Download or read book A Global Alliance Against Forced Labour written by International Labour Office and published by International Labour Organization. This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is an account of contemporary forced labour to date. It provides the first global and regional estimates by an international organization of forced labour in the world today, including the number of people affected and how many of them are victims of trafficking, as well as of the profits made by the criminals exploiting trafficked workers.Based on these data, the report highlights the gravity of the problem of forced labour. From this data emerges three major categories of forced labour: forced labour imposed by the State for economic, political or other purposes, forced labour linked to poverty and discrimination and forced labour that arises from migration and trafficking of workers across the world, often associated with globalization. The report provides evidence that the abolition of forced labour represents a challenge for virtually every country in the world industrialized, transition and developing countries alike. It assesses experience at the national level in taking up this challenge, with particular emphasis on the importance of sound laws and policies and their rigorous enforcement, as well as effective prevention strategies. The report also reviews the actions against forced labour taken over the past four years by the ILO and its tripartite partners governments, employers and workers. It calls for a new global alliance to relegate forced labour to history.

Download or read book Combating Forced Labour written by International Labour Office. Special Action Programme to Combat Forced Labour and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ILO estimates that 21 million people are currently victims of forced labour. Employers are committed to the elimination of this abhorrent practice. Not only does it create unfair competition and ultimately affect the bottom line, but it represents a huge potential reputational risk, particularly when global supply chains have reached unprecedented levels of complexity. Employers overwhelmingly supported the adoption of two important new ILO instruments in 2014, the Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention, 1930 and the Forced Labour Recommendation (Supplementary Measures), No. 203. This newly revised edition of the Employers' Handbook on forced labour, produced jointly by the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) and the ILO, offers updated guidance to employers on what forced labour is, how to detect it and effective ways to combat it, thereby ensuring that business operations remain free of such practices. The revised handbook reflects new ILO statistics and research on forced labour as well as the framework of action approved by the ILO Governing Body in 2014. It takes into account as well the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, endorsed by the Human Rights Council in 2011. In a series of seven booklets, the handbook provides guidance on preventive and remedial action, reviews good practice in combating forced labour, and presents information relevant to senior business managers, human resource personnel, sourcing and social compliance staff, social auditors and others.

Book Combating Trafficking in Human Beings for Labour Exploitation

Download or read book Combating Trafficking in Human Beings for Labour Exploitation written by Conny Rijken and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combating trafficking in human beings (THB) for labor exploitation requires additional skills, knowledge, and awareness for effective investigation and prosecution, and for the identification and assistance of victims of this form of THB. Actors other than the police and the prosecution services (such as labor inspectorates, social investigation services, and municipalities) have also become involved in these activities. It is unclear which role these actors can have in identifying victims and in investigating and prosecuting (cross-border) THB for labor exploitation and which improvements are needed. They are often unfamiliar with, for instance, the specific needs of victims, how trafficking networks operate, and how to cooperate with colleagues abroad. These problems obviously hamper the combating of THB for labor exploitation. In addition, difficulties in defining THB for labor exploitation still exist. Labor exploitation, as such, is not a term used in the Palermo Protocol or the EU Directive on Preventing and Combating THB and Protecting Victims. One can say that labor exploitation includes, at least, forced and compulsory labor and services, slavery, and slavery-like practices, although this does not solve the problems encountered in defining the crime. In this book, these and other problems, as well as the challenges of dealing with these problems, are identified. It includes research in five countries (Austria, The Netherlands, Romania, Serbia, and Spain), research on the EU legal framework, an analysis of the country studies, as well as four articles reflecting on these problems.

Book Approaches to Reducing the Use of Forced or Child Labor

Download or read book Approaches to Reducing the Use of Forced or Child Labor written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-11-09 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, child labor and forced labor are widespread and complex problems. They are conceptually different phenomena, requiring different policy responses, though they may also overlap in practice. The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) was designed to reduce the use of child and forced labor in the production of goods consumed in the United States. The Act was reauthorized in 2003, 2005, and 2008. In response to provisions of TVPA, the the Bureau of International Labor Affairs requested that the National Research Council organize a two-day workshop. The workshop, summarized in this volume, discusses methods for identifying and organizing a standard set of practices that will reduce the likelihood that persons will use forced labor or child labor to produce goods, with a focus on business and governmental practices.

Download or read book ASEAN and Human Trafficking written by Naparat Kranrattanasuit and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trafficking in persons is a serious crime that affects the human rights, dignity and integrity of all its victims including women, men, and children in the Association of Southeast Asia Nation (ASEAN) region. ASEAN has made efforts to fight human trafficking through inter alia the establishment of regional counter-human trafficking laws and human rights bodies to establish best norms and practices for its member countries. Nevertheless, the International Labour Organization (ILO) recently declared that there are more than 11.7 million forced labor victims in the Asia-Pacific region encompassing the biggest concentration of forced labour victims in the world. This volume reviews the achievements and the deficiencies of ASEAN’s counter-human strategies at the national and regional level. It offers suggestions for the reform of ASEAN's anti-trafficking laws and for the creation of a regional anti-trafficking human rights body specialized in preventing human trafficking, promoting equal protection of all trafficking victims, and prosecuting human traffickers.

Book Addressing Modern Slavery

Download or read book Addressing Modern Slavery written by Justine Nolan and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 40 million people are modern-day slaves, more than ever before in human history. Long after slavery was officially abolished, the practice not only continues but thrives. Whether they are women in electronics or apparel sweatshops, children in brick kilns or on cocoa farms, or men trapped in bonded labour working on construction sites, millions of people globally are forced to perform labour through coercion, intimidation or deceit. In a world of growing inequality and trade-offs between the haves and the have-nots, consumers, business and government are all part of the problem and the solution. While we have all become accustomed to fast fashion and cheap consumer goods, the affordability of these commodities often comes at the price of human exploitation. Addressing Modern Slavery examines slavery in the modern world and outlines ways it can be stopped. 'Addressing Modern Slavery is essential reading for anyone committed to understanding and tackling the scourge of modern slavery in contemporary businesses and supply chains.' — Fiona McGaughey, University of Western Australia ‘Justine Nolan and Martijn Boersma have expertly confronted the tragic reality of modern slavery and show us how exploited men, women and children are harmed in global supply chains. A slave may be far away or in our immediate neighbourhood. The book is based on years of careful research and outlines steps we can all take to respond to modern slavery.’ — Jennifer Burn, Professor, NSW Interim Anti-Slavery Commissioner ‘This is a hugely impressive book which builds a compelling argument as to why all organisations must work towards the elimination of modern slavery’ — David Cooke, Managing Director, Konica Minolta ‘The book should be a valuable resource for policymakers, business executives and civil society organisations alike, for it not only assesses the efficacy of existing regulatory initiatives and business practices, but also outlines what needs to change to eliminate modern slavery.’ — Surya Deva, City University of Hong Kong ‘This book exposes both the need and the opportunities to drive reform on modern slavery, particularly on forced labor. From case studies around business practices to examples grounded in the lived experiences of workers, Addressing Modern Slavery presents a comprehensive overview of the issue and empowers us all with the information we need to act.’ — Amol Mehra, Managing Director, Freedom Fund ‘Addressing Modern Slavery shines a light on the terrible human cost of our insatiable consumption. Pervasive labour exploitation is all too often forgotten in our emphasis on growth and GDP. This book is both a wake-up call and a powerful demonstration of how connectivity and collaboration can help us eradicate a systemic and urgent challenge.’ — Kumi Naidoo, Secretary General, Amnesty International

Book Bonded Labor

    Book Details:
  • Author : Siddharth Kara
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2014-05-06
  • ISBN : 0231158491
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book Bonded Labor written by Siddharth Kara and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siddharth KaraÕs Sex Trafficking has become a critical resource for its revelations into an unconscionable business, and its detailed analysis of the tradeÕs immense economic benefits and human cost. This volume is KaraÕs second, explosive study of slavery, this time focusing on the deeply entrenched and wholly unjust system of bonded labor. Drawing on eleven years of research in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, Kara delves into an ancient and ever-evolving mode of slavery that ensnares roughly six out of every ten slaves in the world and generates profits that exceeded $17.6 billion in 2011. In addition to providing a thorough economic, historical, and legal overview of bonded labor, Kara travels to the far reaches of South Asia, from cyclone-wracked southwestern Bangladesh to the Thar desert on the India-Pakistan border, to uncover the brutish realities of such industries as hand-woven-carpet making, tea and rice farming, construction, brick manufacture, and frozen-shrimp production. He describes the violent enslavement of millions of impoverished men, women, and children who toil in the production of numerous products at minimal cost to the global market. He also follows supply chains directly to Western consumers, vividly connecting regional bonded labor practices to the appetites of the world. KaraÕs pioneering analysis encompasses human trafficking, child labor, and global security, and he concludes with specific initiatives to eliminate the system of bonded labor from South Asia once and for all.
