The Combat Engineers and the Signal Corps began to cloud this belief in World War I. The Medical Corps, the Chemical Corps and the Bomb Disposal squads of the Ordnance Corps began to demand respect as dangerous assignments in World War II. In Korea all the services won the right to be shot at. War becomes increasingly a matter of logistics. The thin cutting edge of infantry, armor and artillery still contains the larger proportion of heroes, dead and alive, but these combat arms depend more and more on the services to provide them not only with the traditional beans and bullets, but with gasoline, transportation, medical service, concealing smoke, communications equipment, graves registration, potable water, laundry service—the list is endless. Here are some true accounts that tell how the services fulfilled their missions in a tough and dirty little war. There are tales of devotion to duty that match those of any combat arm. There are roles of technical proficiency combined with the foresight to seize opportunities as they arose. But because these are true stories, there are descriptions of actions whose only value is to indicate what should not be done, what lock of preparedness means in lives and dollars. Here is an honest book—one that had to be honest because it was conceived to tell the whole truth, for the education of our army. Book excerpt: The genesis of this work, "Fire for Effect: Field Artillery and Close Air Support in the US Army," was the controversial decision in 2001 to deploy Army combat units to Afghanistan without their supporting field artillery units. Fire for Effect provides a historical survey of the relationship between field artillery and close air support (CAS) in the US Army since World War I. A recurring theme in this survey is the desire of air operators for independence in operations. This first occurs at the organizational level in the development of strategic bombing theories and forces. The desire for independence emerges also in Air Force doctrine which stressed the importance of interdiction over CAS missions. Eventually, the Army aviation community also sought independence in the idea of the independent strike of attack helicopters, known as the deep attack. This last concept became at least partially discredited in the sands of Iraq in 2003. Independent air operations contrast with the Army's traditional combined arms concept where the arms and services work together to complement each other's strengths and cover weaknesses. The field artillery has long been a key member of the combined arms team. The Army ground commander has controlled all the elements of this team except the fixed-wing close air support. Despite the differences in theory and practice, since the 1960s the two services have developed cooperative and coordinated systems that have solved most difficulties. Over these last 40 years, much progress has also been made with the development of precision guided munitions, giving both services the ability to use point fire weapons in their delivery of CAS. As this study shows, the introduction of sophisticated precision weapons has separated CAS from artillery, creating distinct and complementary systems of fire support. Both, however, remain necessary to give the ground commander responsive and powerful fires in the broad variety of combat situations that characterize the modern battlefield.

Book excerpt: This thesis is an historical analysis of the employment of the field artillery during the 3rd Corps attack to relieve the American soldiers surrounded at BASTOGNE. The doctrine and training of the field artilery units is examined. This examination is used to evaluate the employment techniques used by 3rd Corps artillery. The development and maturation process of the 3rd Corps artillery is traced from its first combat experience at Metz through its employment during the initial stages of the Battle of the Bulge. This thesis discusses the pre-war training, doctrine of the period, and development and use of the Field Artillery Group. Actions taken by 3rd Corps prior to and during the attack are analyzed to review their employment techniques and compliance with the doctrine of the period. Among the lessons demonstrated by this study are: the adherence to a standard set of employment procedures and compliance with doctrine was effective in this battle; field atillery units should be employed as battalion size units; current day feld artillerymen should practice all the standard tactical missions; local procedures that violate doctrine should be avoided; field artillery units should train with the maneuver units they will support. The thesis concludes that the standardized set of employment procedures used by III Corps, and a through understanding of doctrine, created the flexibility necessary for the employment of the field artillery during this battle.
