Book excerpt: Nestled in Vietnam’s Thua Thien Province, west of the city of Hue, and bordering Laos, the narrow 40-kilometer long A Shau Valley, situated between densely forested mountain ranges, witnessed prolonged campaigning throughout the Vietnam War and served as a hub of the Communist supply network as well as a key point of access to South Vietnam. Drawing upon an impressive array of archival materials, this deeply researched book offers the first comprehensive account of operations and battles that transpired there during the war, coupled with a trenchant analysis of the American failure to wrest control of the Valley despite years of commitment of troops and resources, and how that failure contributed to the final outcome of the war. In so doing, it not only sheds light on where military tactics and strategy devised by American leaders went awry, but also traces the extraordinary acts of heroism on the part of American soldiers, many of whom lost their lives fighting the North Vietnamese in this hostile, forbidding terrain. This book, which fills a gap in the historiography of the Vietnam War, will appeal to scholars seeking to enhance their understanding of major events and turning points in the war, as well as to students of military history and strategy.

Book Biggest Stick The Employment Of Artillery Units In Counterinsurgency

Download or read book Biggest Stick The Employment Of Artillery Units In Counterinsurgency written by Major Richard B. Johnson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study uses a comparative analysis of the Malayan Emergency, the American experience in Vietnam, and Operation Iraqi Freedom to examine the role and effectiveness of artillery units in complex counterinsurgency environments. Through this analysis, four factors emerge which impact the employment of artillery units: the counterinsurgency effort’s requirement for indirect fires, constraints and limitations on indirect fires, the counterinsurgency effort’s force organization, and the conversion cost of non-standard roles for artillery units. In conclusion, the study offers five broadly descriptive fundamentals for employing artillery units in a counterinsurgency environment: invest in tactical leadership, exploit lessons learned, support the operational approach and strategic framework, maintain a pragmatic fire support capability, and minimize collateral damage. Finally, the study examines the role of education for leaders in a counterinsurgency, and it’s influence on these imperative fundamentals.

Book History of the 101st Airborne Division

Download or read book History of the 101st Airborne Division written by Colonel Robert E. Jones and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of the 101st Airborne Division is the epic story of the Division from its activation in August 1942 through the completion of Operation Desert Storm in April 1991. The Division’s progression through the sky took decades of hard work and tens of thousands of dedicated soldiers. In World War II, the 101st became the first American troops to set foot in occupied France, when, on 6 June 1944, its paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines, clearing the way for the 4th Infantry Division landing on Utah Beach. The Division would become famous for its work in Holland during Operation Market Garden, and for its successful defense of Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. In Vietnam, the “Screaming Eagles” engaged in battle from 1965 to 1972, when they began their evolution to Air Mobile by deploying by helicopter. In the Gulf War, the Division fired the first shots of Operation Desert Storm by destroying Iraqi radar sites, and during ground war of the operation, they made the longest and largest air assault in history. In every engagement and during the training periods in between, the 101st Airborne Division has honored the words of its first commander, General William C. Lee, that it has a “rendezvous with destiny.” This book is a fitting record of that history, and of the men who are proud to be called “Screaming Eagles.”

This book was released on 1974 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scenario Recurring Evaluation System (SCORES) was directed by Department of the Army to evaluate several corps structures for Mideast operations. One objective of the resultant study, the Heavy/Light Corps Mideast (HLC-ME) Study, was to evaluate the surveillance, target acquisition, and night observation (STANO) capabilities of the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) This report documents support provided to SCORES by the Combat Operations Analysis Directorate (COAD) of the Combined Arms Combat Developments Activity (CACDA) in satisfying this objective. COAD applied the model, Surveillance, Target Acquisition Routines for Manual War Games-Computerized (STARMAN-C) to selected portions of the SCORES Jiffy war game HLC-ME results, using the HLC-ME dynamic scenario. Model outputs were collected into measures of effectiveness (MOE), which provided quantitative values for an operational evaluation of the division's current capabilities and also for establishment of a baseline capability against which future augmentations to the division's STANO equipments may be compared to Evaluation of the MOEs led to the identification of strengths in the division's current STANO configuration, such as superior SLAR capability and tank detection capability, and weaknesses, such as the limited capability to detect firing artillery tubes The report includes insights and recommendations for exploiting the strengths and eliminating the weaknesses in the STANO capabilities of the division.

Book The 101st Airborne in Normandy June 1944

Download or read book The 101st Airborne in Normandy June 1944 written by Yves Buffetaut and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-08-19 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A condensed ‘Band of Brothers’ with profiles of Richard Winters and Easy company as well as the German and American Generals . . . 5 stars” (Army Rumour Service). 101st Airborne Division was activated in August 1942 in Louisiana, and its first combat mission was Operation Overlord. On D-Day—June 6, 1944—101st and 82nd Airborne dropped onto the Cotentin Peninsula hours before the landings, tasked with capturing bridges and positions, taking out German strongpoints and batteries, and securing the exits from Utah and Omaha Beaches. Things did not initially go smoothly for 101st Airborne, with cloud and antiaircraft fire disrupting the drops. Casualties were high in some areas due to heavy pre-registered German fire. Nevertheless, the paratroopers fought on, and they did manage to secure the crucial beach exits, even if they only achieved a tenuous hold on some other positions. A few days later, 101st Airborne was tasked with attacking the German-held city of Carentan as part of the consolidation of the US beachheads and establishment of a defensive line against the anticipated German counteroffensive. The 101st forced its way into Carentan on June 10 and 11. The Germans withdrew the following day, and a counteroffensive was put down by elements of the 2nd Armored Division. This fully illustrated book details the planning of the airborne element of D-Day and the execution of the plans until the troops were withdrawn to prepare for the next big airborne operation, Market Garden. “Always good to read a detailed account of one division’s contribution to Operation Overlord. The detail is exceptional and fascinating.” —Books Monthly
