Download or read book Heroes of Discovery in America Classic Reprint written by Charles Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Discovery in America The explorers of this continent were great men in their day, and they have made a great mark on the his tory of the land they made known. For more than four centuries their work has been kept up and it is not yet complete, for there are areas still in America on which the foot of the white man has not been set. From Columbus, who daringly crossed an unknown ocean to discover an unknown continent, to Peary, who in our own day has time and again plunged into the seas of ice in restless quest of the mysterious pole, the list is a long one and is filled with names of valiant and unconquerable men. Heroes of discovery are these in the highest sense, and it is fitting that the story of their deeds should be put upon record. This we have sought to do, in as full a sense as the space at our command permits, endeavoring to omit none of the great discoverers, none of the leaders in this great drama of the opening of a new world. It is hoped that readers will find these tales full of interest and inspira tion and gain from them an adequate sense of what was accomplished in the great work of exploring a continent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christopher Columbus and the New World of His Discovery: A Narrative I have received the proofs of the new and revised edition of your Columbus, and I have noted the passages which have been materially altered from the original edition. This book marks an epoch in Columbian literature for in it the hero who discovered the New World is shown for the first time as a living man. You have raised him from the dust of documents and shown him as a human being, a creature of flesh and blood who acts thinks, loves and fights like ourselves, and who is subject, as all real men must be, to passions, mistakes and illusions. You have had the courage to cut loose from the traditional line followed by all the modern biographers of Columbus; and although I differ from you in certain details, I look upon your book as giving a more true and lively picture of the great discoverer than is contained in any other work written on the subject. Church and state do their utmost to enhance the impressiveness of the celebration. The beauties of the Catholic liturgy and the resources of secular pomp are exhausted to make the festivities worthy Of the great event commemorated and of the hero honored. The solemn ser vices oi the Church, the illumination and decoration of towns and cities, the erection of statues, eloquence, music, and the dramatic art - all contribute to the splendors of this international holiday. To crown all, Europe Asia, Africa and Australia, have sent their choicest products in science and art to the Exposition organized by the great republic of the New World, in honor of the great Genoese discoverer. Download or read book Columbus and the New World Heroes of Discovery and Conquest written by D. M. Kelsey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbus and the New World Heroes of Discovery and Conquest: Embracing the Lives, Voyages and Explorations of the Northmen, Columbus, Vespucius, Balboa, the Cabots, Magellan, and Other Navigators 0 man may draw so great a lesson from the life of Columbus as the American. The Obscurity of his birth, the poverty of his youth, the struggles of his manhood, and the incomparable benefit to humanity of his one achievement, are in absolute sympathy with the American idea. In this country no station is so humble that therefrom the ambition may not reach the very pinnacle of citizenship. The history of our country furnishes innumerable instances where the most eminent scholars, soldiers, statesmen and financiers have reached their places of intellectual, political or commer cial power by overcoming the same obstacles and subduing the same difficul ties as menaced and confronted this Genoese boy. Our form of government is inspired and the hope of citizenship is based upon ideal men of which Col umbus was a type. And it is most fitting that the American people, in full harmony with the spirit of the New World, should evolve the World's Col umbian Exposition, as a grand tribute to the man whom Providence elected as the instrument of the greatest gift to Christendom that history records. Columbus died a martyr to ingratitude, while his follower Yespucius was re nowned above all men in the name distinguishing this continent. But the American people, true to their high sense of patriotic duty, true to their principles as a race, and true to the theory of their form of government, have rolled back the centuries to venerate the humble scholar who died alone at Valladolid. The great festival which is to commemorate the achievement of the Italian sailor boy, the son of a common workman, demonstrates how deep into our hearts has the spirit of democracy and universal rights found its everlasting place. Book Columbus and the Spanish Discovery of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Columbus and the Spanish Discovery of America Classic Reprint written by Charles Francis Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbus and the Spanish Discovery of America It is, however, wholly aside from my purpose to enter into any controversy over Columbus. It is enough to say that the part he played in the great drama of the discovery and subsequent development of America was no less important than it was dramatic; but, as it is my purpose to show, the real impor tance of his part in the discovery was due not to the man him self, but to those he represented, the company, so to speak, he carried with him to America. Himself a Genoese adven turer, just as ready to sail in the service of France or England as of Portugal or Spain, it so chanced he did sail in the service of Spain, with results for Spain, Europe, the New World, and indeed for the whole human race, to some of which I now propose to refer. It is necessary to say only one word more in regard to the discovery of America. Before doing so I want to repeat and emphasize the belief that nothing which scholars can unearth or critics suggest can, or in my judgment should, detract from the brilliancy of the exploit of Columbus, or the admiration it exacts. He sailed due West into the unknown in order to reach the East. He did it; and he alone did it. The fact that the Norsemen had five centuries before done what he now did in no wise detracts from the splendor of the achievement. The scientific result was his he is entitled to all credit for it.
