Download or read book Skin Colour Politics written by Nina Kullrich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global practice of skin bleaching is predominantly understood as an internalized legacy of colonialism and an embodiment of Western ideals of beauty. This book offers a new perspective on fair skin preference in India: it challenges the assumption that desires for light skin are always a desire of whiteness. Rather than talking back to the colonial centre, skin colour politics reorganise and reinforce social distinctions in Indian societies, which are neither exclusively local nor global. Based on primary research conducted in Delhi, this multi-dimensional study shows how skin colour intersects with and reproduces other categories of social distinction – primarily gender, class, caste, race, region and religion. It historically embeds fairness as an Indian, precolonial yet transnational ideal of beauty. The bleached body emerges as an active and thus, potentially resistant part of negotiating social status within multiple power relations and complex beauty regimes. By mapping a whole geography of skin colours in India, this book shows how fair skin as a locally embedded beauty norm and whiteness as a global cultural imperative interrelate.

Download or read book Sabri S Colours written by story Rinchin and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sabri loves to draw. She draws wherever she can. On the floor of the hut with rough chalk, or with her one and only pencil on paper from old notebooks. She draws her world - the sun coming up from behind the hills, her Ayti and Baba and little Chakuli crawling, the chicken, the goats. . . Then one day in school she sees long colour pencils, and paint that comes out of bottles. After that it isn't enough for her to draw - she longs to fill the pictures with colour. Sabri's Colours captures the poignancy of Sabri's yearning with skill and understatement. While it tugs at the heart, the young girl's spirit and determination to get what is out of her reach is powerful and inspiring. The strong lines and colours of the pictures beautifully illustrate the mood of the story.
Download or read book Tintoretto s Difference written by Kamini Vellodi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-27 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative account of the philosophical problem of 'difference' in art history, Tintoretto's Difference offers a new reading of this pioneering 16th century painter, drawing upon the work of the 20th century philosopher Gilles Deleuze. Bringing together philosophical, art historical, art theoretical and art historiographical analysis, it is the first book-length study in English of Tintoretto for nearly two decades and the first in-depth exploration of the implications of Gilles Deleuze's philosophy for the understanding of early modern art and for the discipline of art history. With a focus on Deleuze's important concept of the diagram, Tintoretto's Difference positions the artist's work within a critical study of both art history's methods, concepts and modes of thought, and some of the fundamental dimensions of its scholarly practice: context, tradition, influence, and fact. Indicating potentials of the diagrammatic for art historical thinking across the registers of semiotics, aesthetics, and time, Tintoretto's Difference offers at once an innovative study of this seminal artist, an elaboration of Deleuze's philosophy of the diagram, and a new avenue for a philosophical art history.

Book excerpt: The independence of India with its cursed partition lies at the background of the novel. The book is a family story of Sushila, a forced migrant from erstwhile East Pakistan. The shocking declaration of partition at once made them alien to their motherland. The eight-membered family, forced by circumstances to leave behind rich property, set out for India penniless. Sushilas father-in-law died on the way. That stunning blow brought her back to her past life under the guidance of her father-in-law, whose tremendous personality she tried to present, reminiscing past incidents. The contemporary social milieu and the educational system in erstwhile East Pakistan are presented through the bringing up and education of Nirbed, Sushilas elder son. The ineffable hardship and struggle of the family and finally their survival at the cost of a number of deaths that the family faced deserve praise, but Sushila was then beyond all acclaims.
