Book excerpt: Writer and artist Margie Crisp has traveled the length of Texas’ Colorado River, which rises in Dawson County, south of Lubbock, and flows 860 miles southeast across the state to its mouth on the Gulf of Mexico at Matagorda Bay. Echoing the truth of Heraclitus’s ancient dictum, the river’s character changes dramatically from its dusty headwaters on the High Plains to its meandering presence on the coastal prairie. The Colorado is the longest river with both its source and its mouth in Texas, and its water, from beginning to end, provides for the state’s agricultural, municipal, and recreational needs. As Crisp notes, the Colorado River is perhaps most frequently associated with its middle reaches in the Hill Country, where it has been dammed to create the six reservoirs known as the Highland Lakes. Following Crisp as she explores the river, sometimes with her fisherman husband, readers meet the river’s denizens—animal, plant, and human—and learn something about the natural history, the politics, and those who influence the fate of the river and the water it carries. Those who live intimately with the natural landscape inevitably formulate emotional responses to their surroundings, and the people living on or near the Colorado River are no exception. Crisp’s own loving tribute to the river and its inhabitants is enhanced by the exquisite art she has created for this book. Her photographs and maps round out the useful and beautiful accompaniments to this thoughtful portrait of one of Texas’ most beloved rivers. Former first lady Laura Bush unveils this year's Texas Book Festival poster designed by artist Margie Crisp, author of River of Contrasts: The Texas Colorado. The poster features cliff swallows flying over the Colorado River. Book Women and Social Movements in Latin America

Download or read book Women and Social Movements in Latin America written by Lynn Stephen and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1997-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's grassroots activism in Latin America combines a commitment to basic survival for women and their children with a challenge to women's subordination to men. Women activists insist that issues such as rape, battering, and reproductive control cannot be divorced from women's concerns about housing, food, land, and medical care. This innovative, comparative study explores six cases of women's grassroots activism in Mexico, El Salvador, Brazil, and Chile. Lynn Stephen communicates the ideas, experiences, and perceptions of women who participate in collective action, while she explains the structural conditions and ideological discourses that set the context within which women act and interpret their experiences. She includes revealing interviews with activists, detailed histories of organizations and movements, and a theoretical discussion of gender, collective identity, and feminist anthropology and methods.

Book Picturing America 1497 1899 Text

Download or read book Picturing America 1497 1899 Text written by Gloria-Gilda Deák and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gloria Gilda Deak's comprehensive documentation of over a thousand maps, drawings, and urban views, selected from the New York Public Library's notable collection of Americana, makes her work a primary reference tool in the area of American historical prints. As such it will replace Stokes and Haskell's American Historical Prints, which for over half a century has been the chief reference work in this area. For more than four centuries, graphic artists contributed to a wealth of woodcuts, engravings, etchings, aquatints, lithographs, and chromolithographs that serve today as indispensable documents in the study of America's history. In Deak's work a continuum of these images allows us to follow the cultural shaping of America from the time of the European discoveries to the end of the nineteenth century. Of particular interest are a German woodcut of New World natives, a gouache painting of Florida Indians in 1564, scenes of the Gold Rush, and nineteenth-century bird's-eye views of American cities.
