Book Memoirs of a Lawman

Download or read book Memoirs of a Lawman written by Cyrus Wells Shores and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gunneson City Sheriff “Doc” Cyrus Wells Shores (1844-1934)—nicknamed after the doctor who delivered him in Hicksville, Detroit in 1844—became well-known as a Colorado lawman for bringing down local criminals without parading his authority or a display of guns. Born in the village of Hicksville, about thirty miles from Detroit, Michigan, “Doc” Shores moved to Montana as a young man via a steamer and paid passage by hunting game along the route. Prospecting and hunting in Montana, he then worked in Wyoming hauling ties for the railroad, and later drove cattle up from Texas. After many experiences with Indians, blizzards, and rustlers in Kansas, Shores took his wife Agnes and settled in Gunnison, Colorado, where he served as the sheriff of Gunnison County when it was still "wild" and became noted as the lawman who captured Alfred Packer, the infamous "Colorado Cannibal." During his lengthy career, “Doc” Shores also served as a deputy U.S. Marshal, a railroad detective, and as chief of police for Salt Lake City, Utah—and he rode with Tom Horn when Horn was still on the right side of the law. First published in 1962 and edited by Wilson Rockwell, Memoirs of a Lawman are “Doc” Shores’ gripping, as previously unpublished memoirs, spanning his life from his early days on the Western frontier, his appointments as Sheriff, and later Federal Marshall.

Book excerpt: Officer Steve Greene served with three law enforcement agencies during the course of his career, one in southern California and two in southwestern Colorado. This book documents his service with the Hinsdale County Sheriff's Department, headquartered in Lake City, Colorado, an extremely remote region of 14,000 foot peaks in the San Juan Mountains of the Rocky Mountain Range. His life as a rural police officer, along with actual incident reports of daily occurrences, ranging from murder to search and rescue to common traffic violations, are shared to provide insight about what it's like to be a cop in the backcountry, and how it differs radically from big city police work. Steve began his career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in California in 1973. This unique book is a rare behind-the-scenes look at rural law enforcement work, the real deal. All incidents are actual events in the line of duty. Identities of criminal suspects have been concealed to maintain confidentiality. These chronicles are not simply based on true events, they are true events, including the personal life and actions of Officer Greene. 229 photographs. http: //coloradolawman.wordpress.com

Download or read book Cipriano Baca Frontier Lawman of New Mexico written by Chuck Hornung and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-07-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography of the legendary officer Cipriano Baca, scion of a prestigious Spanish lineage tracing their heritage to the first settlers in Nuevo Mexico. Baca was well educated and a successful businessman before beginning a 52-year career as a peace officer. Tenderhearted by nature, he could be cold as steel, even lethal, doing his duty. He was a man of honor and principle in an age of greed and selfishness. Baca was first an undercover range detective, next a deputy sheriff and a deputy U.S. marshal. In 1901, the territorial governor appointed him the first sheriff of the newly formed Luna County, and in 1905, the territorial governor selected him as the first man to become the lieutenant of New Mexico's newly established territorial rangers. Written with the full cooperation of the Baca family and utilizing public and private records, this biography presents the truth about a complicated man. One revelation: Baca discovered who was the real killer of Pat Garrett and the motive behind the murder of the man who killed Billy the Kid.

Download or read book Colorado s Confederate Legacy written by Scott Dalton Myers and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-06-23 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Civil War, 1861-1865, was the culmination of many complex causes and factors. Slavery was not the direct or proximate cause of the war; rather, it was intertwined with these other complex issues and factors that led to the war (see Appendix A). But it is not much of a stretch to say it was also about the American West--fought to determine the future control of that part of the United States. Although most of the battles took place in the east and southeast, the American West held much political and economic value for both the North and the South. The ports of California would allow the Confederate States to avoid the Union blockade of Southern ports. The gold and silver of the West could provide additional funding sources for the war for both sides. Last but not least, all of the territories and states held value for their present or future legislative votes in both chambers of Congress. What role did Colorado play in the Civil War and what role did Confederate Veterans play in development of Colorado? Two Colorado Governors were Confederate Veterans--James B. Grant, the third governor of Colorado served in the 20th Alabama Light Artillery Battalion, and Charles S. Thomas, the eleventh governor of Colorado served in the Georgia State Militia. Georgia Confederate Veterans William and Joseph Russell discovered gold on Little Dry Creek along the Platte River that began the "Pikes Peak or Bust" Gold Rush in 1858. The brothers founded the town of Auraria on Cherry Creek, which became the first permanent settlement of what would later become Denver. Confederate Veterans also served as senators, a congressmen, as well as officials in towns and municipalities all across the state. These prominent Colorado Confederate Veterans are listed in this book, along with the positions they held. Additionally, there are 506 known Confederate Veterans buried in Colorado. These Veterans are detailed in this book, with their names, ranks, units, and the location of their graves. The Civil War radically changed the role of women on both sides of the war. Women filled positions previously held by men, and many women found themselves working outside the home and earning money for the first time in their lives. Most of the Southern women served on the home front, but many also served the Confederacy as nurses, spies, couriers, and dignitaries, while some even served in uniform. You can read about some of their exploits in this book. Native Americans also served in the Confederate States Army. Their units and achievements are detailed herein.

  • Pages : 153 pages

Download or read book Keepin the Peace written by Judy Buffington Sammons and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They had a certain bond and a certain look--the courageous lawman and the notorious outlaw of Colorado's eadly-day Western Slope. And even though one stood for right and the other for wrong, the line between them would often blur and sometimes disappear in America's "wild and wooly" West. Blending historical detail, biographical sketches, and good-guy, bad-guy stories of the day, author Judy Sammons takes a look at a time when Keepin' the Peace went hand-in-hand with civilizing a hard and vast wilderness. As local governments organized in Western Colorado in the late 1800's, a vaqriety of lawmen were assigned to keep the peace, each with a certain territory, county, or town to patrol. With the coming of civilization, there also came those men who would prey on the riches of others; and, in some instances, lawman turned outlaw and outlaw turned lawman, depending on which way the enterprising wind was blowing. Keepin' the Peace takes a look at the early days of law enforcement in Western Colorado--the brazen criminals, the intrepid lawmen, the inhumane jails, and the merciless vigilante "neck tie parties." In towns stretching north from Western Colorado's New Mexico border to Wyoming, from Creede to Gunnison to Delta and on up to Brown's Park--Sammanons' stories, capturing the danger and eaxcitement of that time, promise to hold the rapt attention of readers today.
