Book Color Me In

Download or read book Color Me In written by Natasha Díaz and published by Ember. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful coming-of-age novel, pulled from personal experience, about the meaning of friendship, the joyful beginnings of romance, and the racism and religious intolerance that can both strain a family to the breaking point and strengthen its bonds. Growing up in an affluent suburb of New York City, sixteen-year-old Nevaeh Levitz never thought much about her biracial roots. When her Black mom and Jewish dad split up, she relocates to her mom's family home in Harlem and is forced to confront her identity for the first time. Nevaeh wants to get to know her extended family, but because she inadvertently passes as white, her cousin thinks she's too privileged, pampered, and selfish to relate to the injustices African Americans face on a daily basis. In the meantime, Nevaeh's dad decides that she should have a belated bat mitzvah instead of a sweet sixteen, which guarantees social humiliation at her posh private school. But rather than take a stand, Nevaeh does what she's always done when life gets complicated: she stays silent. Only when Nevaeh stumbles upon a secret from her mom's past, finds herself falling in love, and sees firsthand the prejudice her family faces does she begin to realize she has her own voice. And choices. Will she continue to let circumstances dictate her path? Or will she decide once for all who and where she is meant to be? "Absolutely outstanding!" --Nic Stone, New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin

Book excerpt: For the first time, lawyer, feminist, and civil rights advocate Florynce Kennedy tells the complete story of her life from being one of the first Black women to graduate from Colombia Law School to representing Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker. Raised in Kansas City in the 1920s, Flo Kennedy was one of five sisters, the daughter of a father who held off the Ku Klux Klan with a shotgun and a mother who taught them to hold out for the best. After graduating from Colombia Law School, Kennedy went on to be a delegate to the Black Power conferences, then took up the battle against sexism and racism by founding the Media Workshop, the Feminist Party, and the Coalition Against Racism and Sexism. She also became a member of the legal team that was instrumental in liberalizing the New York State abortion laws and was a coauthor of Abortion Rap. Flo Kennedy mastered guerilla warfare tactics on the picket line and in the streets and suites of New York. With the words that resonated and entertained TV audiences for years, Kennedy has returned with a memoir that flawlessly presents her case to readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color Me is the story of Johnathan Black, a painter who suffers from schizophrenia. Throughout the drama, his psychoses are represented by percussion and dance. The play follows Johnathan’s growth over the course of eighteen years, from the onset of his mental illness through his triumph over insanity as he accepts a position teaching art at a nearby community college. The play begins when Johnathan is only twelve years of age and the Black family is just finishing their evening meal. Johnathan’s birthday is arriving, and his parents have decided to give him weekly painting lessons to encourage his young talent. Susan Black is pregnant and will soon give birth to Johnathan’s only sibling, Anne Marie. Up in his room after dinner, as Johnathan finishes his homework, he interacts with the demons that will haunt him throughout his youth. His subconscious mind is plagued by nine demons altogether: one black, one white, and one for each color of the spectrum. When Act Two begins, Johnathan is a grown man, hospitalized on an inpatient psychiatric ward. The demons are with him in the hospital, filling the roles of the hospital staff as well as other patients on the ward. All the demons are progressively transformed from the colors of Johnathan’s subconscious mind to realistic, tangible characters with whom Johnathan interacts as he becomes grounded in reality. At the conclusion of Act Three, Johnathan, having accepted a job offer to teach art at a local community college, proposes to Claire.

Book excerpt: As a child, we could enjoy coloring in our coloring books all day long. The images were simple, mostly cartoon characters, and we did not even have to actually stay in the lines. As adults, we are expected to be more mature, more sophisticated, and more grown up. Yet, we should still take time to enjoy our artistic side. The Color Me! series of books are coloring books developed specifically for adults. The images are more than simple outlines; set up to be colored in or painted on as you desire. Each image is my individual creation, and will not be found in coloring books designed for kids. Be proud to show off your work on your refrigerator again ......
