Drawing on years of interviews and collaboration with interviewees, Theresa Delgadillo offers a set of narratives that explore the fascinating family, community, work, and career experiences of Milwaukee's Latinas during this time of transformation. Book excerpt: Homer's King Nestor of "sandy Pylas" passes from legend into history in this first volume of the report of excavations on a hill called Englianos in Messenia, conducted by the Archaeological Expedition of the University of Cincinnati. The palace with its contents and the surrounding lower town indicate that this was an administrative center and the capital of a prosperous Mycenaean kingdom. The name Pylos appears on more than fifty tablets, and there can be no doubt that this was the Messenian abode of the Nestor of Greek tradition. Destroyed by fire at the end of the 13th century B.C., and never reoccupied, the palace has lain for more than 3,000 years in ruins. During the annual campaigns of the Expedition between 1952 and 1964, it emerged as a complex of four separate structures of considerable size. The floors, stumps of wall bearing plaster with painted decorations, doorways, and other evidence helped to identify gateways, courts, porticoes, vestibules, corridors, a great throne room, storerooms, a wine magazine, pantries filled with pottery, a bathroom, stairways, and a repair shop. Except for the tablets, seals, and frescoes, which will be described in other volumes, all the finds are recorded and illustrated with plans, drawings, and photographs. Originally published in 1966. My prob lems, when I really pause for reflection, Weren't so weighty after all, usually a current heart interest or something; but Pie always listened attentively, giving in her slow meditative manner, h'er unbiased opinion at the conclusion. What always amazed me about her, was the utter lack of concern over a gay social life. To be sure, she figured largely In our bull ses sions over cokes late at night, and our impromptu get-togethers, but When it came to dating and our college dances, Pie just didn't play a part. She dances well and gracefully too. We danced often with her in our rooms between classes or after dinner, and many were the times we'd land dizzily on a bed after a crazy jitterbug round, breathless from our Splurge of energy, Shouting with laughter. We often talked of taking her to school dances and I feel ashamed that We never did, but all our dances Were girl-break affairs, and fear ing that it Would be more of an ordeal than a pleasure, we dismissed the idea of taking her. None of us were tactful or clever enough (i'm not quite sure which), to get dates for Pie, and She never wished us to make contacts or arrangements and there it stood. When the much dreaded tests and exams rolled around, they would find Pie, Screw ball and me, studying until the wee hours. No, We weren't being noble to study with Pie, not by a long Shot, for it was she who helped. Screwball and I were more the scatterbrain type, whereas Pie could retain anything she studied.
