Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Days These papers I saved at the time, and, hav ing now revised, rewritten and rearranged them and added some new material as well, I have had the presumption to believe they may, in the form here submitted, gratify sentiment among surviving Colonists and curiosity among the newer population Of Greeley; not because I wrote of the scenes here faithfully described, but because others lived them in the long, long ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Days: A Historical Reader The large place given to history during the last fifteen years, in both the elementary and the high school, is significant. It indicates a fuller realization of the importance of this branch of study in developing the social instincts. Through the study of history the narrow contact of every-day life is supplemented by a knowledge of the struggles and achievements of all humanity. The pupil shares and profits by the experience of the race; and by making the racial life his own, he gains social insight and social disposition, which prepare him to render his highest service to the community. In the lower grades of the elementary school most of the work in history should be in the form of oral language lessons, and the subject-matter should be presented in story form. The concrete, the personal, and the dramatic, appealing in a special way to children, should be made prominent; for through this avenue alone can the teacher reach the imaginative and the emotional life of the child. But as early as the fourth grade reading should supplement the oral work. With this idea in view the present volume, the second of a series, has been prepared. The title gives some indication of its scope and purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romances of Colonial Days Once a poet with the gold of fact and the alloy of his own fancy fashioned a poem which he called a "Ring." In writing these "Romances of Colonial Days" I have endeavored to keep the poet's "Ring" always in mind, to make them rings of romance in which gold and alloy each has its part. Musty old records, letters, and diaries of men and women long since dead have furnished me my gold; and it is surprising how much of gold, facts still breathing the life, the love, the joys and sorrows of a bygone day, lies hidden in these dry-looking mines of history. In many of the "Romances" the gold has very nearly shaped itself into a ring, requiring little help from the alloy of fancy; not only do the characters of these "Romances" live and love, joy and sorrow according to historic fact, they even speak according to historic fact. Book Colonial Days in Old New York Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Days in Old New York This book should perhaps have been "intituled" Colonial Days in New Netherland, for much of the life described herein was in the days of Dutch rule. But it was New Netherland for scarce half a century, and the name is half-forgotten, though it remained, both in outer life and in heart, a Dutch colonie, even when the province was New York and an English governor had control. In New Netherland, as in every place where the Dutch plant a colony, as in South Africa to-day, Dutch ways, Dutch notions, the Dutch tongue lingered long. To this day, Dutch influence and Dutch traits, as well as Dutch names, are ever present and are a force in New York Life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Days Ways as Gathered From Family Papers Our national life has not been one of growth from savagery up, through many wars, through centuries of depression and oppression, of slow disintegrations and slower constructions, but is the result of deliberate purpose on the part of the majority of the first colonists, of no matter what creed or nationality, to occupy this wide, wild, new land, free to the first comer, and bring to it all the best of the institutions of the Old World, while leaving behind all that was worn out, all that had served its day. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dames and Daughters of Colonial Days These narrative sketches of certain dames and daughters of our colonial days are designed to illustrate the different types, epochs, and sections that made up our early American history. Other names of almost equal importance with those chosen could have been included in the pages of this volume, but that might have given undue preponderance to a particular epoch or a special section. It has been the author's endeavor to show in her choice of characters, periods, and environ ments the changing conditions of colonial life from the stern and controversial days of early settle ment to the broader if no less strenuous times that saw the birth of the republic. Sit you here, Dame Kate, while I go up to the change-house and speak again to Master Jones, who of a truth is treating us but scurvily in thus delaying. You do not fear to tarry here a short half hour, with Roger Wilder for guard and Elizabeth Tillie for company, - eh, Kate?"Surely not, John. He was a young preacher, filled with a desire to carry his teaching to the new lands across the Atlantic Ocean, and he had been asked to be the minister of the First Church in Boston. As it turned out, however, his ideas were not the ideas of the people of Boston, and he soon found that the First Church was not the place for him. Book The Colonial Period Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Colonial Period Classic Reprint written by Charles McLean Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonial Period No attempt has been made in this volume to write a history of the individual colonies or to present in any form a narrative of the events of colonial history. Many familiar details have been omitted and all military undertakings in which the colonists were engaged have been passed over with very little comment. In dealing with colonial history in general, three factors stand out for conspicuous treatment: the mother country, the colonies, and the relations between them. It has been customary in the past, when writing of the colonial period of American history, to minimize the importance of the first and last factors, and to lay stress, at least until the period of the Revolution is reached, upon the colonies, their institutions, and life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life in Colonial Days It is my hope that children as well as grown folk will find in these pages much to interest them in the accounts of the llfe of children of olden times. I have had this end constantly in my mind, though I have made no attempt, nor had 1 any intent, to write in a style for the perusal of children; for I have not found that intelligent children care much 'or long for such hooks, except in the very rare cases of the few great hooks that have heen written for children, and which are loved and read as much hy the old as hy the young.
