Book excerpt: Samson Fisia is an African in the diaspora who forsook his thriving brokerage business in the US to return home to his native country of Kunsunda, a typical sub-saharan African country, to contribute his quota towards bringing it out of the doldrums of backwardness, poverty, and under development. To achieve this, he knew the best way would be to change the political culture of Kunsunda as when the politics is right, all else falls in place. Thus, he set up a movement - Movement for Change in the Political Culture of Kunsunda(MOCPIK). Unknown to him and his compatriots, the West was just about fed up with certain things, rather, fed up with the way certain things were going in Africa which they were loosing a grasp on, and were not happy about; thus, to rectify this anomaly, they embarked on a mission to recolonize her. This idea began with Britain, who webbed other fellow Westerners in, who subsequently loved the idea, approved it, and embraced it; with an agreement to recolonize colonies they left off as colonial masters. And for a test run, the former British colonial territory of Kunsunda was chosen to try out the idea, upon whose success fellow Westerners will move in, reconquer, and recolonize their respective former colonies. However, they put up a facade to the world they are going back to Africa for a myriad of issues including her inability to govern herself, migration issues, amongst others.So, while Fisia's movement was sanitizing Kunsunda, Britain had already drawn a road map to recolonizing her and set about achieving it. But the Africans unwittingly fell right into the hands of the Westerners and their plans as they found ready made facilitators for their hideous plan. And what are these facilitators? It is the African's inherent propensity towards corruption, greed, self centeredness, and dearth of leadership abilities. Thus, while Fisia and his movement tried and tried to change the political culture, they kept meeting with failure after failure as Kunsundans refused to change from their corrupt tendencies until frustrated, Fisia took his life. And it is this inalienable corrupt nature in Kunsundans, and Africans in general, that made the Britons succeed as they manipulated the Kunsundan economy and polity through her avaricious citizens with all sorts of treacherous instruments until they recolonized her. The stage was now clear for a complete continental recolonization.

This culture, based upon a separate language community with its own folkloric, musical, religious, and historical traditions, was created by slaves brought directly from Africa to Louisiana before 1731. It still survives as the acknowledged cultural heritage of tens of thousands of people of all races in the southern part of the state. In this pathbreaking work, Gwendolyn Midlo Hall studies Louisiana's creole slave community during the eighteenth century, focusing on the slaves' African origins, the evolution of their own language and culture, and the role they played in the formation of the broader society, economy, and culture of the region. Hall bases her study on research in a wide range of archival sources in Louisiana, France, and Spain and employs several disciplines--history, anthropology, linguistics, and folklore--in her analysis. Among the topics she considers are the French slave trade from Africa to Louisiana, the ethnic origins of the slaves, and relations between African slaves and native Indians. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking history of slaveholders' fear of the people they enslaved and its consequences From the Stono Rebellion in 1739 to the Haitian Revolution of 1791 to Nat Turner's Rebellion in 1831, slave insurrections have been understood as emblematic rejections of enslavement, the most powerful and, perhaps, the only way for slaves to successfully challenge the brutal system they endured. In The World That Fear Made, Jason T. Sharples orients the mirror to those in power who were preoccupied with their exposure to insurrection. Because enslavers in British North America and the Caribbean methodically terrorized slaves and anticipated just vengeance, colonial officials consolidated their regime around the dread of rebellion. As Sharples shows through a comprehensive data set, colonial officials launched investigations into dubious rumors of planned revolts twice as often as actual slave uprisings occurred. In most of these cases, magistrates believed they had discovered plans for insurrection, coordinated by a network of enslaved men, just in time to avert the uprising. Their crackdowns, known as conspiracy scares, could last for weeks and involve hundreds of suspects. They sometimes brought the execution or banishment of dozens of slaves at a time, and loss and heartbreak many times over. Mining archival records, Sharples shows how colonists from New York to Barbados tortured slaves to solicit confessions of baroque plots that were strikingly consistent across places and periods. Informants claimed that conspirators took direction from foreign agents; timed alleged rebellions for a holiday such as Easter; planned to set fires that would make it easier to ambush white people in the confusion; and coordinated the uprising with European or Native American invasion forces. Yet, as Sharples demonstrates, these scripted accounts rarely resembled what enslaved rebels actually did when they took up arms. Ultimately, he argues, conspiracy scares locked colonists and slaves into a cycle of terror that bound American society together through shared racial fear.

Book excerpt: This study analyzes legislation governing black life in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The years from 1664 to 1712 witnessed the formative era of slavery in the middle colonies, and by the beginning of the 18th century, specific laws governing African Americans were passed. The long range effects of the Insurrection of 1712 (which took the lives of nine whites and critically wounded five others) and the Negro Conspiracy of 1741 produced extensive slave codes in New York and New Jersey. Pennsylvania took the more subtle approach of high tariffs, starting a tariff war against slavery. Free blacks suffered under the harsh slave codes, as laws which restricted the movement of slaves also restricted the movement of free African Americans. Slaves were considered property protected by law, but free blacks were denied even this minor protection. Fear of insurrection led New York City, Albany, and Philadelphia to pass restrictive legislation. The greatest obstacle to freeing slaves was legislation requiring manumission bonds. As a result of a diversified economy, African Americans performed virtually every type of labor in the frontier communities of the middle colonies, and developed more skills than their southern counterparts. Eventually, the influx of whites provided cheap day labor that reduced dependency upon slave labor. (Ph.D. dissertation, Ohio State University, 1969; revised with new preface and foreword)
