Book excerpt: Magdalena Medio is one of the poorest and most violent areas of Colombia and a microcosm of the actors and issues underlying Colombia's armed conflict with guerrillas, right-wing paramilitaries, with the army battling for control while the civilian population struggles to survive. The region contains great natural and productive wealth with unequal access. The Program for Development and Peace in Magdalena Medio (PDPMM) seeks solutions to the persistent poverty and increasing violence. Its guiding principles were the need to involve and reflect the concerns of all the region's citizens, and the belief that poverty and violence are complex, interrelated problems which must be tackled simultaneously. The Program, which began in 1995 with a diagnostic phase, embodies a long-term vision for community-led, comprehensive development of the region. It aims to increase living standards and reduce violence by creating the conditions necessary for relationships to develop among communities, NGOs, the business sector, various levels of government and, as appropriate, the armed actors. The project was one of the first Bank lending operations in a new area: peace and development. The project demonstrated that, for a participatory approach to succeed in such a complex and challenging environment, there is no substitute for a design which explicitly incorporates flexibility, close monitoring and analysis of the socio-political situation and a mechanism for feeding this back into the program.

Book The Presented Past

Download or read book The Presented Past written by B. L. Molyneaux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Presented Past is concerned with the differences between the comparatively static, well-understood way in which the past is presented in schools, museums and at historic sites compared to the approaches currently being explored in contemporary archaeology. It challenges the all-too-frequent representation of the past as something finished, understood and objective, rather than something that is `constructed' and therefore open to co-existing interpretations and constant re-interpretation. Central to the book is the belief that the presentation of the past in school curricula and in museum and site interpretations will benefit from a greater use of non-documentary sources derived from archaeological study and oral histories. The book suggests that a view of the past incorporating a larger body of evidence and a wider variety of understanding will help to invigorate the way history is taught. The Presented Past will be of interest to teachers, archaeologists, cultural resource managers, in fact anyone who is concerned with how the past is presented.

Book Societal Dynamics and Fragility

Download or read book Societal Dynamics and Fragility written by The World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's world is changing at breakneck speed, shaking the very foundations of many societies. Increased mobility through massive urbanization and migration allows people unprecedented access to different cultures and ideas; advanced technologies speed the pace of human interaction; the globalization of communication offers new forms of social relationships that may directly contradict traditional norms for behavior. These changes create tremendous stresses on relationships in societies - affecting the way youth interact with their elders, the way women and men relate to each other, how urban migrants and refugees relate to their new environments, and so on. The impacts of these changes are felt acutely in 'fragile' situations, where groups and institutions struggle to adapt to the stresses of rapid social change. In the worst cases, where fragility has given way to open violence - people are more than twice as likely to be malnourished, more than three times as likely to be unable to send their children to school, twice as likely to see their children die before age five, and more than twice as likely to lack clean water. In addition to these domestic challenges, the costs of fragility often spill over to neighboring regions in the form of trafficking in illegal goods and persons, corruption, and violence. 'Societal Dynamics and Fragility' frames a fresh approach to these challenges, by focusing on improving relationships across groups and institutions in society. Drawing on case studies from Yemen, Central African Republic, Haiti, Liberia and Aceh (Indonesia), the book provides a framework for understanding and healing the social divides that often get in the way of building capable institutions and exiting from fragility.

Book excerpt: Annotation Global Economic Prospects and the Developing Countries 2001 discusses three issues that are central to the challenges facing developing countries as they participate in the global trading system: * Many developing countries, particularly some of the poorest ones, have had little success sharing in the expansion of global trade, because of both protectionist policies and inappropriate macroeconomic and trade policies. * In trade negotiations, the global economy faces the critical governance issue of adequate standards for health and safety, labor practices, environmental protection, and intellectual property rights. It will be equally important to ensure that the standards are appropriate and nondiscriminatory, that developing countries participate fully in their formulation, and that compliance is monitored. * The influence of technological innovations and what electronic commerce means for trade and production in developing economies. Global Economic Prospects offers an in-depth analysis of the economic prospects of developing economies as they enter the new millennium. It examines growth and prospects for poverty reduction in the developing world and considers economic output, trade, and financial developments in industrial economies. This edition also includes detailed statistical tables and an analysis of development for each developing country region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the First Review Under the Stand-By Arrangement for Colombia. Under the authorities’ program, economic performance has been mostly favorable. Real economic growth appears to be recovering, led by a pickup in domestic demand that outweighed a decline in net exports. Inflation, however, has remained above the program target. Since late February, the currency has appreciated, responding partly to a sharp decline in the country risk premium. The program is on track and the authorities have reiterated their full commitment to achieving the main elements of the program’s macroeconomic framework.

Book Poverty Reduction and the World Bank

Download or read book Poverty Reduction and the World Bank written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QUOTEEnsuring that the poor will reap some benefit from this much anticipated post-crisis recovery period will require the efforts and collaboration of governments, international financial institutions, the private sector, and civil society, both in crisis and non-crisis countries.QUOTE-James D. Wolfensohn, PresidentPoverty reduction is now more firmly at the center of the Bank's country assistance strategies, with increased efforts to improve the quality of poverty assessments, enhanced monitoring and evaluation of poverty outcomes, and the integration of quantitative with participatory methods. This annual publication reports on World Bank activities in fiscal year 1998, which continued to be aimed at fostering labor-based growth while investing in the development of human capital and providing safety nets. At the same time, Bank activities reflected several new themes: the need to protect the poor from shocks, the role of institutions in implementing policies and providing services, and the importance of participation, partnerships and social capital. The amounts lent under the Program of Targeted Interventions (PTI) has grown from 29 percent of total investment lending in fiscal year 1997 to 40 percent in fiscal 1998, reflecting increased PTI lending in education, social protection, the environment, and to countries in South Asia. The amounts lent for poverty-focused adjustment operations also increased from 52 to 64 percent of total adjustment lending, reflecting efforts to protect the poor hit by the recent crisis in East Asia. The report concludes that the East Asian crisis, as well as other events of the last decade-persistent conflict in some of the poorest African countries, the continuing pain of transition in former socialist economies, and the experience with policy implementation across the world-call for a re-examination of the Bank's poverty reduction strategy, building on the strategy presented in World Development Report 1990 but incorporating new elements as well. This work has begun in preparation for the World Development Report on Poverty which will be published in September 2000.
