This book begins with a brief recitation of the general history of Venezuela, from the arrival of Columbus to the triumph of Simon Bolivar. What follows is a travelogue--typical in the early 20th century--wherein the countryside, people and customs are described by a member of the American upper-class. Lacking Twain's humor, the book is mainly an appreciation of the country's natural features. As an engineer, the principal object of interest for the author is the Orinoco River and its tributaries, which are the major transportation system for eastern and interior Venezuela and the Llanos of Colombia.
