Book English Prepositions Explained

Download or read book English Prepositions Explained written by Seth Lindstromberg and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely revised and expanded edition of "English Prepositions Explained (EPE)," originally published in 1998, " "covers approximately 100 simple, compound, and phrasal English prepositions of space and time with the focus being on short prepositions such as "at, by, in, "and "on. "Its target readership includes teachers of ESOL, pre-service translators and interpreters, undergraduates in English linguistics programs, studious advanced learners and users of English, and anyone who is inquisitive about the English language. The overall aim is to explain how and why meaning changes when one preposition is swapped for another in the same context. While retaining most of the structure of the original, this edition says more about more prepositions. It includes many more figures virtually all new. The exposition draws on recent research, and is substantially founded on evidence from digitalized corpora, including frequency data. "EPE" gives information and insights that will not be found in dictionaries and grammar handbooks."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between the 'sense' of the prepositions over, into and through and the combined 'form' of their preceding and following nouns, using the hypothesis that the co-occurring nouns can predict different senses of the prepositions. It uses concepts drawn from both corpus linguistics and cognitive linguistics, in particular drawing on theories of phraseology formulated by Sinclair and others and on theories of preposition meaning formulated by Langacker and Taylor. 1,366 instances of the use of the prepositions from the ICE-GB corpus were examined. The results indicate a relationship between the senses of prepositions and their co-occurring nouns together with some features of their linguistic behaviour. Over, into and through have similar patterns when their trajector and landmark are combined. The thesis draws on statistical information regarding Human, Concrete object and Abstract object classifications to explore the distribution of sense of over. It uses equivalent information relating to into and through to reinforce and amend the semantic networks for these prepositions proposed by Lakoff and by Tyler and Evans.

Furthermore, it provides a detailed semantic analysis of the three prepositions at, in and on in selected Old and Middle English texts, which shows to what extent the relative distribution of these prepositions changed during that period and how they gradually acquired new, extended senses. The front cover illustration renders the 895 entry of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Parker Ms., and has been reproduced with the permission of the Master and Fellows of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

Book Noun preposition Collocations

Download or read book Noun preposition Collocations written by Christina Nicole Champenois and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is about prepositions, which often cause difficulty for editors, translators, and second-language learners. I focused specifically on noun-preposition collocations. The noun-preposition collocations for my research are taken from the 2010 Chicago Manual of Style (CMS), which is one of the most conservative and widely used style manuals. I compared the CMS guidelines to actual usage as per the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). I used COCA because it is a monitor corpus, which means that it is regularly updated and therefore reflects current usage of words and collocations better than static corpora, which have no additional material added to them. COCA is searchable by parts of speech, making it ideal for finding information about noun-preposition collocations. Also, the CMS is for American English and COCA focuses on American English materials. To gather my data, I performed COCA searches for each of the fourteen nouns that appeared in these noun-preposition collocations and analyzed the results to determine (1) which prepositions collocate with each noun and (2) whether the noun-preposition collocations in COCA are used in the same meaning contexts described in the CMS guidelines. I found that some of the nouns had additional prepositions, other than those listed in the CMS, frequently collocating with them; that some of the meaning contexts included in the CMS guidelines only partially described the meaning contexts found for the noun-preposition collocations in COCA; and that some of the guidelines provided completely full and accurate descriptions of actual usage as per COCA.

Book Collocational and Idiomatic Aspects of Composite Predicates in the History of English

Download or read book Collocational and Idiomatic Aspects of Composite Predicates in the History of English written by Laurel J. Brinton and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this carefully selected volume concerns the existence, frequency, and form of composite/complex predicates (the “take a look” construction) in earlier periods of the English language, an area of scholarship which has been virtually neglected. The various contributions seek to understand the collocational and idiomatic aspects of these structures, as well as of related structures such as complex prepositions (e.g., “on account of”) and phrasal verbs (e.g., “look up”), in their earliest manifestations. Moreover, study of these constructions at the individual stages of English leads to diachronic questions concerning their development, raising issues pertaining to grammaticalization, lexicalization, and idiomaticization-processes which are not always clearly differentiated nor fully understood.

Book The Semantics of Prepositions

Download or read book The Semantics of Prepositions written by Michel Aurnague & Laure Vieu and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 1993 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of the papers in this volume were presented at a workshop on the semantics of prepositions held at the Institut für Angewandte Informationsforschung in February 1990. The broader topic is the conceptualization of space. The papers bring together different approaches to the mental process of interpreting prepositions, in particular, the computational processing of prepositions as predications of different cognitive domains. While no one presentation can claim to be exhaustive, it is hoped that the insights contained will inspire future discussions within cognitive linguistics.

Book Collocations in a Learner Corpus

Download or read book Collocations in a Learner Corpus written by Nadja Nesselhauf and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collocations are both pervasive in language and difficult for language learners, even at an advanced level. In this book, these difficulties are for the first time comprehensively investigated. On the basis of a learner corpus, idiosyncratic collocation use by learners is uncovered, the building material of learner collocations examined, and the factors that contribute to the difficulty of certain groups of collocations identified. An extensive discussion of the implications of the results for the foreign language classroom is also presented, and the contentious issue of the relation of corpus linguistic research and language teaching is thus extended to learner corpus analysis.
