Book Collision and Interaction Induced Spectroscopy

Download or read book Collision and Interaction Induced Spectroscopy written by G.C. Tabisz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collision-or interaction-induced spectroscopy refers to radiative transitions, which are forbidden in free atoms or molecules, but which occur in clusters of interacting atoms or molecules. The most common phenomena are induced absorption, in the infrared region, and induced light scattering, which involves inelastic scattering of visible laser light. The particle interactions giving rise to the necessary induced dipole moments and polarizabilities are modelled at long range by multipole expansions; at short range, electron overlap and exchange mechanisms come into play. Information on atomic and molecular interactions and dynamics in dense media on a picosecond timescale may be drawn from the spectra. Collision-induced absorption in the infrared was discovered at the University of Toronto in 1949 by Crawford, Welsh and Locke who studied liquid O and N. Through the 1950s and 1960s, 2 2 experimental elucidation of the phenomenon, particularly in gases, continued and theoretical underpinnings were established. In the late 1960s, the related phenomenon of collision-induced light scattering was first observed in compressed inert gases. In 1978, an 'Enrico Fermi' Summer School was held at Varenna, Italy, under the directorship of J. Van Kranendonk. The lectures, there, reviewed activity from the previous two decades, during which the approach to the subject had not changed greatly. In 1983, a highly successful NATO Advanced Research Workshop was held at Bonas, France, under the directorship of G. Birnbaum. An important outcome of that meeting was the demonstration of the maturity and sophistication of current experimental and theoretical techniques.

Book Fundamental Processes in Atomic Collision Physics

Download or read book Fundamental Processes in Atomic Collision Physics written by H. Kleinpoppen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the Advanced study Institute on Fundamental Processes in Atomic Collision Physics (Santa Flavia, Italy, September 10-21, 1984) are dedicated to the memory of Sir Harrie r-1assey, whose scientific achievements and life are reviewed herein by Sir David Bates. At the first School on the above topic (Maratea, September 1983, Volume 103 in this series), Harrie Massey presented the introductory lectures, summarized the entire lecture program, and presented an outlook on future developments in atomic collision physics. In an after-dinner speech, Massey recalled personal reminiscences and historical events with regard to atomic collision physics, to which he had contributed by initiating pioneering work and by stimulating and surveying this branch of physics over a period of almost six decades. Participants in the Maratea School will always remember Harrie Massey as a charming and wonderful person who was most pleased to discuss with everyone--students, postdoctorals, and senior scientists--any topic in atomic collision physics. Harrie Massey was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the 1984 Santa Flavia School. Before his death he expressed his interest in attending this second School devoted to the presentation of recent developments and highlights in atomic collision physics. It is the desire of all authors to honor Harrie Massey with their contributions in these Proceedings.

Book Collision Theory for Atoms and Molecules

Download or read book Collision Theory for Atoms and Molecules written by Franco A. Gianturco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO-Advanced Study Institute on "Collision Theory for Atoms and Molecules" was made possible by the main sponsorship and the generous financial support of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division in Brussels. Belgium. Special thanks are therefore due to the late Dr. Mario Di Lullo and to Dr. Craig Sinclair. of this Division. who repeatedly advised us and kept us aware of administrative requirements. The Institute was also assisted by the financial aid from the Scientific Committees for Chemistry and Physics of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). The search and selection of a suitable location. one which participants would easily reach from any of Italy's main airports, was ably aided by the Personnel of the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa and made possible by its Directorship. Our thanks therefore go to its present director. Prof. L. Radicati. and to its past director. Prof. E. Vesentini who first agreed to our use of their main building in Pisa and of their palatial facilities at the "Palazzone" in Cortona.

Book excerpt: This important book contains the invited papers (plenary and review lectures, progress and special reports) presented at XX.ICPEAC, the Twentieth International Conference on the Physics of Electronic and Atomic Collisions. It highlights the current status of research in photonic, electronic and atomic collision physics, for which experimental studies increasingly rely on laser and synchrotron radiation and are more and more interrelated with other fields, such as molecular and chemical physics, surface science, quantum optics, and spectroscopy and formation of exotic atoms.

Book Three State Model for Laser Assisted Collisions

Download or read book Three State Model for Laser Assisted Collisions written by P. R. Berman and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A laser assisted collision (LAC) is one involving a combined collisional-radiative interaction. A typical laser assisted collision can be written as a reaction of the form. A sub I + h-bar omega yields A sub F, where I> and F> are composite initial and final states, respectively, of atoms A and A' which are undergoing the collision, and Omega is the frequency of the laser field which produces the transition from initial to final state. The eigenkets I> and F> may be expressed in terms of the individual atomic-state eigenkets as I> = i> i'>, F> = f> f'>, where unprimed states refer to atom A and primed states refer to atom A'. Laser-assisted collisions have been classified into two broad categories. First, there are the so-called optical collisions (1) or Collisionally-Aided Radiative Excitation (CARE)) (2) involving reactions of the form. Second, there are the so-called radiative collisions or Laser-Induced Collisional Excitation Transfer (LICET) or Radiatively-aided Inelastic Collisions (RAIC). Reprints. (JHD).
