Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LE TRAVAIL DECRIT DANS CE MEMOIRE PORTE SUR L'ETUDE EXPERIMENTALE ET LA MODELISATION DE LA DYNAMIQUE DES COLLISIONS ENTRE AGREGATS DE VAN DER WAALS (D'ARGON OU D'AZOTE) ET UNE SURFACE DE GRAPHITE PYROLYTIQUE AUX ENERGIES THERMIQUES (60 MEV/ATOME). LE DISPOSITIF EXPERIMENTAL COMPORTE UN GENERATEUR DE FAISCEAU MOLECULAIRE ET UNE CHAMBRE ULTRAVIDE CONTENANT L'ECHANTILLON DE GRAPHITE ET DEUX SYSTEMES DE DETECTION DES PARTICULES DIFFUSEES (PAR SPECTROMETRIE DE MASSE ET PAR REMPI), POUVANT TOURNER AUTOUR DE L'ECHANTILLON SUR 340. LA TAILLE DES AGREGATS INCIDENTS (DE 300 A 10000 MONOMERES PAR AGREGAT) EST CONTROLEE PAR UNE METHODE ORIGINALE. LES DONNEES EXPERIMENTALES SONT CONSTITUEES DE DISTRIBUTIONS ANGULAIRES DE FLUX ET DE TEMPS DE VOL DES PARTICULES DIFFUSEES. CES DISTRIBUTIONS COMPORTENT UNE COMPOSANTE TRES ETROITE, RASANT LA SURFACE (PIC A 85) ET DUE A DES AGREGATS RESIDUELS, UNE COMPOSANTE SUPRA-SPECULAIRE PLUS LARGE ET UNE COMPOSANTE DIFFUSE DOMINANTE AUX ANGLES DE DIFFUSION NEGATIFS (I.E. DU MEME COTE DE LA NORMALE QUE LE FAISCEAU INCIDENT). CES DEUX DERNIERES SONT DUES ESSENTIELLEMENT A DES MONOMERES. CES DONNEES EXPERIMENTALES SONT REPRODUITES QUANTITATIVEMENT A PARTIR DU MODELE SUIVANT: LES AGREGATS INCIDENTS SUBISSENT UNE COLLISION FORTEMENT INELASTIQUE AU COURS DE LAQUELLE ILS SE THERMALISENT ET PERDENT LEUR VITESSE DE TRANSLATION DANS LA DIRECTION NORMALE A LA SURFACE. ILS VONT DONC GLISSER SUR CELLE-CI EN EVAPORANT DES PETITS FRAGMENTS A L'ORIGINE DE LA COMPOSANTE SUPRA-SPECULAIRE. LES MONOMERES DE L'AGREGAT PRIS EN SANDWICH ENTRE CELUI-CI ET LA SURFACE SE DETACHENT DE L'AGREGAT ET SUBISSENT UN PROCESSUS DE QUASI-PIEGEAGE SUIVI DE DESORPTION. CEUX D'ENTRE EUX QUI NE REINTEGRENT PAS LE RESTANT DE CET AGREGAT SONT A L'ORIGINE DE LA COMPOSANTE DIFFUSE. LES AUTRES VONT TRANSFERER A CET AGREGAT UNE QUANTITE DE MOUVEMENT DANS LA DIRECTION NORMALE, CE QUI PERMET A CELUI-CI DE QUITTER LA SURFACE. LA COMPOSANTE RASANTE EST ALORS OBSERVEE SI L'AGREGAT RESIDUEL QUITTE LA SURFACE AVANT EVAPORATION COMPLETE

Download or read book Exergy Method written by Jan Szargut and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exergy method makes it possible to detect and quantify the possibilities of improving thermal and chemical processes and systems. The introduction of the concept thermo-ecological cost (cumulative consumption of non-renewable natural exergy resources) generated large application possibilities of exergy in ecology. This book contains a short presentation on the basic principles of exergy analysis and discusses new achievements in the field over the last 15 years. One of the most important issues considered by the distinguished author is the economy of non-renewable natural exergy. Previously discussed only in scientific journals, other important new problems highlighted include: calculation of the chemical exergy of all the stable chemical elements, global natural and anthropogenic exergy losses, practical guidelines for improvement of the thermodynamic imperfection of thermal processes and systems, development of the determination methods of partial exergy losses in thermal systems, evaluation of the natural mineral capital of the Earth, and the application of exergy for the determination of a pro-ecological tax.A basic knowledge of thermodynamics is assumed, and the book is therefore most appropriate for graduate students and engineers working in the field of energy and ecological management.

Book Hydrogen Technology

Download or read book Hydrogen Technology written by Aline Léon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-18 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aline Leon ́ In the last years, public attention was increasingly shifted by the media and world governmentsto the conceptsof saving energy, reducingpollution, protectingthe - vironment, and developing long-term energy supply solutions. In parallel, research funding relating to alternative fuels and energy carriers is increasing on both - tional and international levels. Why has future energy supply become such a matter of concern? The reasons are the problems created by the world’s current energy supply s- tem which is mainly based on fossil fuels. In fact, the energystored in hydrocarb- based solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels was, is, and will be widely consumed for internal combustion engine-based transportation, for electricity and heat generation in residential and industrial sectors, and for the production of fertilizers in agric- ture, as it is convenient, abundant, and cheap. However, such a widespread use of fossil fuels by a constantly growing world population (from 2. 3 billion in 1939 to 6. 5 billion in 2006) gives rise to the two problems of oil supply and environmental degradation. The problemrelated to oil supply is caused by the fact that fossil fuels are not - newable primary energy sources: This means that since the rst barrel of petroleum has been pumped out from the ground, we have been exhausting a heritage given by nature.

Book Handbook of Terrestrial Heat Flow Density Determination

Download or read book Handbook of Terrestrial Heat Flow Density Determination written by R. Haenel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There comes a time in the affairs of every organization when we have to sit down and take stock of where we are and where we want to go. When the International Heat Flow Committee (as it was first called), IHFC, was formed in 1963 at the San Francisco International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics with Francis Birch as its first Chairman, the principal purpose was to stimulate work in the basic aspects of geothermics, particularly the measurement of terrestrial heat-flow density (HFD) in what were then the 'geothermally underdeveloped' areas of the world. In this, the IHFC was remarkably successful. By the beginning of the second decade of our existence, interest in the economic aspects of geothermics was increasing at a rapid pace and the IHFC served as a conduit for all aspects of geothermics and, moreover, became the group responsi ble for collecting data on all types of HFD measurements. In all the tasks that are undertaken, the IHFC relies on the enthusiasm of its members and colleagues who devote much of their time to the important but unglamorous and personally unrewarding tasks that were asked of them, and we arc fortunate that our parent institutions are usually quite tolerant of the time spent by their employees on IHFC work.

Book Thermochemistry of Alloys

Download or read book Thermochemistry of Alloys written by H. Brodowsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermochemistry of alloys has interested generations of scientists and the subject was treated in classical textbooks long ago, e.g. by Hume-Rothery, by Wagner, and by Kubaschewski and Alcock. Nevertheless, the appearance of new materials and the desire to improve traditional materials and metallurgical processes has kept up demand for more information on the thermodynamics of these systems. The advent of computing power has created new opportunities to tie various aspects and properties together, such as phase diagrams and thermodynamic functions, that are in principle thermodynamically inter related but were too cumbersome to work out before. The computer has also been a powerful tool in buUding and testing models that help to explain the underlying causes of non-ideal behavior. At the same time, these calculations have pinpointed areas, where additional and more accurate data are needed. In the laboratory, new methods, improved materials, and sophistica ted instrumentation have gradually changed the way in which experiments are done. Within the time span of perhaps thirty years, the development went from jotting down individual readings of data points to strip chart recording to automatic digital data acquisition. Scholars and students active in the field of "Thermochemistry of Alloys" convened for a NATO Advanced Study Institute at Kiel in August 1987 to discuss these developments. This book collects most of the lectures and seminar papers given at the Institute.

Book Atomic Force Microscopy AFM

Download or read book Atomic Force Microscopy AFM written by Hongshun Yang and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the wide application of nanotechnology in scientific research as well as in industrial product development, it is urgent to develop appropriate tools for investigating and manipulating molecules, especially macromolecules at the nanoscale level. Different microscopes are typical equipment. Due to the high resolution, being maximally close to samples' original status and the low requirement of sample preparation, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied as a nanotechnology tool since it was invented in 1986. As this equipment utilises the force between the sample and scanning tip rather than the light signal as used by many other microscopes, samples with different optical properties can be investigated with AFM without limitations. AFM has many modes including contact mode and non-contact mode, which can be applied for achieving different purposes depending on the samples' properties and final purposes. Recent force spectroscopy can measure the interaction forces of the tip-sample, which is a function of distance between the tip and the sample, thus called a force-distance curve. Force spectroscopy can also be conducted with static or dynamic modes, which has been widely applied in many fields, especially in biophysics for measuring mechanical properties of living organisms or cells. This book focuses on the research on AFM principles, modes of operation and limitation and they are discussed with detailed examples in various fields, ranging from inorganic materials in physics to organic materials in food science, biomedical science, chemistry and others.

Book Materials Issues for Generation IV Systems

Download or read book Materials Issues for Generation IV Systems written by Véronique Ghetta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-23 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming, shortage of low-cost oil resources and the increasing demand for energy are currently controlling the world's economic expansion while often opposing desires for sustainable and peaceful development. In this context, atomic energy satisfactorily fulfills the criteria of low carbon gas production and high overall yield. However, in the absence of industrial fast-breeders the use of nuclear fuel is not optimal, and the production of high activity waste materials is at a maximum. These are the principal reasons for the development of a new, fourth generation of nuclear reactors, minimizing the undesirable side-effects of current nuclear energy production technology while increasing yields by increasing operation temperatures and opening the way for the industrial production of hydrogen through the decomposition of water. The construction and use of such reactors is hindered by several factors, including performance limitations of known structural materials, particularly if the life of the projected systems had to extend over the periods necessary to achieve low costs (at least 60 years). This book collects lectures and seminars presented at the homonymous NATO ASI held in autumn 2007 at the Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques in Cargèse, France. The adopted approach aims at improving and coordinating basic knowledge in materials science and engineering with specific areas of condensed matter physics, the physics of particle/matter interaction and of radiation damage. It is our belief that this methodology is crucially conditioning the development and the industrial production of new structural materials capable of coping with the requirements of these future reactors.

Book Calorimetry and Thermal Methods in Catalysis

Download or read book Calorimetry and Thermal Methods in Catalysis written by Aline Auroux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about calorimetry and thermal analysis methods, alone or linked to other techniques, as applied to the characterization of catalysts, supports and adsorbents, and to the study of catalytic reactions in various domains: air and wastewater treatment, clean and renewable energies, refining of hydrocarbons, green chemistry, hydrogen production and storage. The book is intended to fill the gap between the basic thermodynamic and kinetics concepts acquired by students during their academic formation, and the use of experimental techniques such as thermal analysis and calorimetry to answer practical questions. Moreover, it supplies insights into the various thermal and calorimetric methods which can be employed in studies aimed at characterizing the physico-chemical properties of solid adsorbents, supports and catalysts, and the processes related to the adsorption desorption phenomena of the reactants and/or products of catalytic reactions. The book also covers the basic concepts for physico-chemical comprehension of the relevant phenomena. Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the catalytic reactions can be fruitfully investigated by means of thermal analysis and calorimetric methods, in order to better understand the sequence of the elemental steps in the catalysed reaction. So the fundamental theory behind the various thermal analysis and calorimetric techniques and methods also are illustrated.

  • ISBN : 1461323894
  • Pages : 429 pages

Download or read book Dynamic Light Scattering written by R. Pecora and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty years since their inception, modern dynamic light-scattering techniques have become increasingly sophisticated, and their applications have grown exceedingly diverse. Applications of the techniques to problems in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and fluid mechanics have prolifer ated. It is probably no longer possible for one or two authors to write a monograph to cover in depth the advances in scattering techniques and the main areas in which they have made a major impact. This volume, which we expect to be the first of aseries, presents reviews of selected specialized areas by renowned experts. It makes no attempt to be comprehensive; it emphasizes a body of related applications to polymeric, biological, and colloidal systems, and to critical phenomena. The well-known monographs on dynamic light scattering by Berne and Pecora and by Chu were published almost ten years ago. They provided comprehensive treatments of the general principles of dynamic light scat tering and gave introductions to a wide variety of applications, but natu rally they could not treat the new applications and advances in older ones that have arisen in the last decade. The new applications include studies of interacting particles in solution (Chapter 4); scaling approaches to the dynamics of polymers, including polymers in semidilute solution (Chapter 5); the use of both Fabry-Perot interferometry and photon correlation spectroscopy to study bulk polymers (Chapter 6); studies of micelIes and microemulsions (Chapter 8); studies of polymer gels (Chapter 9).
