During the last decades, great progress has been achieved as the result of space missions to planets and small bodies - as teroids and comets - and improved remote-sensing methods, as well as due to refined techniques of laboratory measurements and a rapid progress in theoretical studies, involving the development of various astrophysical and geophysical models. These models are based, in particular, on the approach of comparative planetology becoming a powerful tool in revealing evolu tionary processes which have been shaping the planets since their origin. Comets and asteroids, being identified as remnants of planetary formation, serve as a clue to the reconstruction of Solar System history because they encapsulated the primordial material from which the planets were built up. At the same time, these interplanetary carriers of original matter and mes sengers from the past, being triggered by dynamical processes well outside our neighboring space, were responsible for numerous catastrophic events when impacting on the planets and thus causing dramatic changes of their natural conditions. In the crossroads of astronomy and geophysics, recent years have seen a growing understanding of the importance of collisional processes through out the history of the Solar System and, therefore, the necessity to get more insight into the problem of interactions of planets and small bodies.

Book excerpt: Dynamical imprints on planetary systems, such as planetary spin rate, orbital eccentricity, mutual inclination, and stellar obliquity provide direct evidence by which we can compare theoretical models of planet formation against observations. In this dissertation, I capitalized on these dynamical tracers to identify and model critical physical processes during multiple stages of planet formation and evolution. First, planetary spin is a fingerprint of planet formation and reflects how a forming gas giant planet interacts with its circumplanetary disk. Using hydrodynamic simulations, I showed there is a maximum spin rate a gas giant planet can spin up through its circumplanetary disk. In contrast to the classical view of planets accreting until their rotation reaches the breakup periods, planets can at most reach 60--80% of their breakup rates before their gaseous envelope accretion becomes decretion, accompanying solutions where angular momentum is being lost. The work complemented the existing giant planet accretion models and predicted the maximum spin rate on forming giant planets. Second, I used debris disks as an indirect probe of young planetary systems where strong stellar activity challenges planetary characterization. Using analytical studies and N-body simulations, I showed in most systems, debris disk features such as warps, eccentric rings, gaps, and azimuthal asymmetries are dominated by a single planet and can be used to interpret the young planet's properties. However, in a few system configurations where the detected planet is not the dominant planet of the disk features, the interpretation of the planet's properties can be flawed by order of magnitudes. Lastly, orbital eccentricity and stellar obliquity are powerful tracers to the mature planet's dynamical history. I focused on Warm Jupiters, which are giant planets with orbital periods between 8 to 200 days. The origin of Warm Jupiters was not clear and the investigation was limited by the small sample size. Using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and ground-based observing facilities, I discovered and characterized Warm Jupiters in TESS Full-Frame Image data. I led the discovery of TOI-3362b, a super eccentric Warm Jupiter suggesting the high-eccentricity tidal migration origin, and TOI-1268b, a young circular Warm Jupiter aligned with its host star suggesting an in-situ formation or disk migration origin. From both individual targets and the population study of the catalog on the eccentricity distribution study using hierarchical Bayesian modeling, I showed Warm Jupiters are likely from multiple origins.

Book excerpt: The book begins with a historical review of four major theories for the origin of the Solar System in particular, or of planets in general, which highlight the major problems that need to be solved by any plausible theory. In many theories, including that which form the major theme of this book, the formation of planets and stars is intimately linked, so four chapters are devoted to the processes that can be described as the birth, life and death of stars. Recent observations that have revealed the existence of planets around many Sun-like stars are described in detail, followed by a clear exposition of the Capture Theory for the origin of planets. Many aspects of this theory are illustrated with sophisticated computer modelling that convincingly demonstrates the plausibility of the theory. The Capture Theory is in complete accord with all observations, including the estimate it gives for the proportion of Sun-like stars with planets. It is the only theory that sits comfortably with all present observational and theoretical constraints. The general theory of planet formation does not explain the detailed structure of the Solar System. An early postulated collision of two major planets is shown to explain many disparate features of the Solar System the nature of the terrestrial planets, surface features of the Moon and its relationship with Earth, asteroids, comets and dwarf planets, the relationship between Neptune, Triton and Pluto and the characteristics of meteorites, including the isotopic anomalies found in them. The postulate of a planetary collision is given support by a 2009 NASA observation of the residue of such an event around a distant young star.

Book excerpt: The increasing number of discovered extra-solar planets opens a new opportunity for studies of the formation of planetary systems. Their diversity keeps challenging the long-standing theories which were based on data primarily from our own solar system. Resonant planetary systems are of particular interest because their dynamical configuration provides constraints on the otherwise unobservable formation and migration phase. In this thesis, formation scenarios for the planetary systems HD128311 and HD45364 are presented. N-body simulations of two planets and two dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of proto-planetary discs are used to realistically model the convergent migration phase and the capture into resonance. The results indicate that the proto-planetary disc initially has a larger surface density than previously thought. Proto-planets are exposed to stochastic forces, generated by density fluctuations in a turbulent disc. A generic model of both a single planet, and two planets in mean motion resonance, being stochastically forced is presented and applied to the system GJ876. It turns out that GJ876 is stable for reasonable strengths of the stochastic forces, but systems with lighter planets can get disrupted. Even if a resonance is not completely disrupted, stochastic forces create characteristic, observable libration patterns. As a further application, the stochastic migration of small bodies in Saturn's rings is studied. Analytic predictions of collisional and gravitational interactions of a moonlet with ring particles are compared to realistic three dimensional collisional N-body simulations with up to a million particles. Estimates of both the migration rate and the eccentricity evolution of embedded moonlets are confirmed. The random walk of the moonlet is fast enough to be directly observable by the Cassini spacecraft. Turbulence in the proto-stellar disc also plays an important role during the early phases of the planet formation process. In the core accretion model, small, metre-sized particles are getting concentrated in pressure maxima and will eventually undergo a rapid gravitational collapse to form a gravitationally bound planetesimal. Due to the large separation of scales, this process is very hard to model numerically. A scaled method is presented, that allows for the correct treatment of self-gravity for a marginally collisional system by taking into account the relevant small scale processes. Interestingly, this system is dynamically very similar to Saturn's rings.
