Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Rydberg atoms have been the subject of intense study, becoming the testing ground for several quantum mechanical problems. This book provides a comprehensive description of the physics of Rydberg atoms, highlighting their remarkable properties by reference to their behaviour in a wide range of physical situations. Following an overview of the basic properties of Rydberg atoms, their interactions with electric and magnetic fields are analysed in detail. The collisions of Rydberg atoms with neutral and charged species are described, and the use of multichannel quantum defect theory in the study of Rydberg atomic systems is discussed. Experimental and theoretical research in this extensive field is also reviewed, making the book valuable to both graduate students and established researchers in physics and physical chemistry.

Book Atomic Collisions and Spectra

Download or read book Atomic Collisions and Spectra written by U Fano and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic Collisions and Spectra provides an overview of the state of knowledge on atomic collision physics. The book grew out of lecture notes for a succession of courses at the University of Chicago in 1967-1979, which reported the new material as it was taking a definite form. It has been enriched since 1980, as the subject matured and continued to expand. The book is organized into four parts. Part A deals briefly with rather elementary items of general information. Part B then takes up in considerable detail those aspects of single-electron scattering whose mastery is essential for treating multielectron processes. Part C deals with multielectron processes with a residual—if often realistic—restriction, namely, that the multielectron interactions remain confined within a core region from which only a single electron escapes into alternative channels of a long-range field. Part D surveys studies of double (or multiple) escape of electrons from a core. The book is intended for multiple use as a graduate school text, a tool for independent study, or a reference for particular topics.

Book Rydberg States of Atoms and Molecules

Download or read book Rydberg States of Atoms and Molecules written by R. F. Stebbings and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-04-29 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the development of the tunable laser, experimental studies in Rydberg states of atoms and molecules grew at a remarkable rate. Fundamental questions were resolved, opening doors for more experimental activity and theoretical inquiry. In this comprehensive summary of knowledge of Rydberg states, which was originally published in 1983, Professors Stebbings and Dunning brought together a select collection of experimental and theoretical discussions. Composed of works by the acknowledged leaders in the field, this volume will be of value for anyone with an interest in molecular physics.

Book Physics of Highly Excited Atoms and Ions

Download or read book Physics of Highly Excited Atoms and Ions written by Vladimir S. Lebedev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to the basic aspects of the physics of highly ex cited (Rydberg) states of atom's. After almost twenty years, this remains a hot topic of modern atomic physics. Such studies are important for many areas of physics and its applications including spectroscopy, astrophysics and radio astronomy, physics of electronic and atomic collisions, kinetics and di agnostics of gases, and low- and high-temperature plasmas. Physical phenom ena in radiative, collisional, and spectral-line broadening processes involving Rydberg atoms and ions are primarily determined by the peculiar properties and exotic features of highly excited states. The growth of interest and research activity in the physics of Rydberg the last two decades was stimulated by an extremely rapid de atoms over velopment of high-resolution laser spectroscopy, methods of selective excita tion and detection of highly excited states, atomic-beam techniques as well as radio astronomy. This has facilitated significant progress in the differ ent directions of the physics of highly excited atoms being of fundamental and practical importance. In particular, evident advances were achieved in studies of the structure and spectra of highly excited atoms, their behavior in static electric and magnetic fields, interactions with electromagnetic ra diation, spectral-line broadening and the shift of Rydberg series, collisions with electrons, ions, atoms, and molecules, etc. The principle objective of the present book is to reflect the most important physical approaches and efficient theoretical techniques in the modem physics of highly excited atoms and ions.

Book The Role of Rydberg States in Spectroscopy and Photochemistry

Download or read book The Role of Rydberg States in Spectroscopy and Photochemistry written by C. Sándorfy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to offer a balanced overview of molecular Rydberg spectroscopy as it has developed over recent decades. Recent evolution has split Rydberg spectroscopy into two apparently distinct fields: the one concerns the low (n=3-5) Rydberg states, the other the very high (typically EMn/EM”150) Rydberg states. The former is aimed at spectral levels where Rydberg, valence-shell, and intermediate-type states interact, with a variety of photochemical consequences. The latter considers states extremely close to the ionization limit, from whereionization is possible with a very slight amount of additional energy. Recently developed techniques make it possible to produce ions in well-defined electronic, vibrational and rotational states, including states resulting from spin-orbit or Jahn-Teller splitting. It is then possible to study the structure and reactions of such state-selected ions as well as those of the corresponding neutral molecules. These techniques amount to badly needed high resolution photoelectron spectroscopy.

Book Atomic Spectra and Collisions in External Fields

Download or read book Atomic Spectra and Collisions in External Fields written by K.T. Taylor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers associated with the conference "Atomic Spectra and Collisions in External Fields II", that took place July 30-31 1987 at Royal Holloway and Beford New College. The first meeting of this name was held at the National Bureau of Standards in Gaithersburg, Maryland in 1984, and, if any tradition can yet be said to have been established in the series, it is that the proceedings be written after the conference. We hope thereby to preserve some impression of the discussions that took place, which in both cases were vigorous and unihibited. Both meetings happen to have convened in proximity to major developments in the field. At the time of the first conference, results of experimental measurements of dielectronic recombination in electron ion beams were beginning to appear. These showed large discrepancies with theoretical calculations, which were attributed to the effects of rather weak electric fields on the highly-excited states that mediate the recombination process. This conjecture gave rise to widespread concern in the plasma physics community that the representation of dielectronic recombination in existing plasma models, in which it plays an important role in energy and ionization balance, might be seriously in error due to neglect of the effects of electric and magnetic fields. The subject of field effects on recombination processes was thus a major focus of the 1984 meeting.

Book Studies in Ultracold Ground State Atom rydberg Atom Interactions

Download or read book Studies in Ultracold Ground State Atom rydberg Atom Interactions written by Samuel C Markson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collisions involving Rydberg atoms reveal detailed information on the state of a background medium and can be used as diagnostic probes of temperature and density distributions in a neutral or ionized gas. Spectroscopy of Rydberg atoms in highly excited states reveals the interaction of the Rydberg electron with core electrons, including relativistic effects, and can be used for precise determination of fundamental constants. The advent of ultracold trapping and cooling methods in the last three decades has ushered in a new paradigm in Rydberg physics control and manipulation. The concept of the Rydberg blockade, for instance, al- lows for precise control of long-range dipolar interaction between atoms, creation of correlated many-body wave functions, and realization of macroscopic quantum entanglement and quan- tum logic operations. The formation of a new class of Rydberg molecules arising from ground and Rydberg atom collisions can be used to manipulate electron-atom scattering phase shifts, form and manipulate molecules with enormous permanent electric dipole moments, study Ry- dberg chemistry at the ultracold, and realize macroscopic quantum polaronic systems. In this thesis, I will investigate charge transfer from covalent ground-Rydberg collisions to form heavy ion pair states. In another related study, I explore the formation of spin-mixed ultralong range Rydberg molecules, by accounting for spin-dependent relativistic fine and hyperfine interac- tion. Such studies help to not only explain experimental observations, but also point to how molecular reactions can be controlled using small electric or magnetic fields.

Download or read book Atomic Physics 5 written by Richard Marrus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth International Conference on Atomic Physics was held July 26-30, 1976 in Berkeley, California. Invited talks were solicited which were representative of the most important developments since the fourth conference held in Heidelberg, Germany in 1974. In this volume, we have collected the manuscripts of the invited speakers, in the belief that they represent a guide to contemporary re search in atomic physics. Experimental work on such topics as the search for parity violation, spectroscopy and collision processes of fast, highly-stripped heavy ions, exotic atoms, high-Rydberg states, laser spectros copy, photoelectron spectroscopy, and others are described. The work described in these manuscripts is a clear mea sure of the continued vitality of our field. One unhappy event since the last conference was the passing of Dr. Victor William (Bill) Cohen (1911-1974) of Brookhaven National Laboratory. Bill was one of the scientists who recognized early the need for personal communication among atomic physicists and was the prime mover in establishing the present international conference series. Everyone who has enjoyed the stimulation of these conferences is indebted to Bill Cohen, and we dedicate this volume of the proceedings to his memory.

Book Nonlinear Optical Studies of Rydberg Atoms Using Degenerate Four Wave Mixing

Download or read book Nonlinear Optical Studies of Rydberg Atoms Using Degenerate Four Wave Mixing written by J. F. Lam and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectral behavior of the third order nonlinear optical response of atomic sodium was studied. As a result, new kinds of frequency domain spectroscopy techniques were developed: nearly degenerate four-wave mixing, polarization nearly degenerate four-wave mixing, frequency domain three-state spectroscopy, and nonlinear Hanle effect in degenerate four-wave mixing. These techniques have provided new information on several areas of collision physics including: dephasing collisions (spectral broadening and frequency shift), velocity changing collisions, state changing collisions, and spin-flip collisions. Book Theoretical Studies of Rydberg Atom Collisions

Download or read book Theoretical Studies of Rydberg Atom Collisions written by R. E. Olson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two years, theoretical studies were performed on a variety of topics related to collisions involving Rydberg atoms. Progress was made towards the understanding of ion-Rydberg atom, Rydberg atom-Rydberg atom, and ground state atom-Rydberg atom collisions. Cross sections were calculated for electron capture, ionization, and excitation processes and parametrized in terms of atomic parameters. A strong dc electric field was also incoporated in calculations of electron capture and ionization cross sections for ion-Rydberg atom collisions. The results of this latter investigation indicate the design of a far ir photon detector which is based on the field ionization of Rydberg atoms may be limited by the collision processes. (Author).
