Book Collision and Collusion

Download or read book Collision and Collusion written by Janine R. Wedel and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Soviet Union's communist empire collapsed in 1989, a mood of euphoria took hold in the West and in Eastern Europe. The West had won the ultimate victory--it had driven a silver stake through the heart of Communism. Its next planned step was to help the nations of Eastern Europe to reconstruct themselves as democratic, free-market states, and full partners in the First World Order. But that, as Janine Wedel reveals in this gripping volume, was before Western governments set their poorly conceived programs in motion. Collision and Collusion tells the bizarre and sometimes scandalous story of Western governments' attempts to aid the former Soviet block. He shows how by mid-decade, Western aid policies had often backfired, effectively discouraging market reforms and exasperating electorates who, remarkably, had voted back in the previously despised Communists. Collision and Collusion is the first book to explain where the Western dollars intended to aid Eastern Europe went, and why they did so little to help. Taking a hard look at the bureaucrats, politicians, and consultants who worked to set up Western economic and political systems in Eastern Europe, the book details the extraordinary costs of institutional ignorance, cultural misunderstanding, and unrealistic expectations.

Book excerpt: Cultural Collision and Collusion addresses the complexity of problems that surround youth culture and school culture. By broadening the scholarly dialogue and examining and disseminating relevant research to practitioners, the book seeks to provide insight into youth culture and some manifestations of popular culture (e.g., hip-hop). In addition, the book examines some of the tensions that develop when the values of youth and adults collide in U.S. schools. Finally, the book mines the extant literature for insight and enlightenment in the best interest of academic inquiry and practical applicability.

Book Colluding Colliding and Contending with Norms of Whiteness

Download or read book Colluding Colliding and Contending with Norms of Whiteness written by Jennifer L. S. Chandler and published by IAP. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing experiences of White mothers of daughters and sons of color across the U. S., Chandler provides an insider’s view of the complex ways in which Whiteness norms appear and operate. Through uncovering and analyzing Whiteness norms occurring across motherhood stages, Chandler has developed a model of three common ways of interacting with the norms of Whiteness: colluding, colliding, and contending. Chandler’s results suggest that collisions with Whiteness norms are a necessary step to increasing one’s racial literacy which is essential for effective contentions with norms of Whiteness. She proposes steps for applying her model in education settings, which can also be applied in other organizational contexts.

Book Ball of Collusion

Download or read book Ball of Collusion written by Andrew C. McCarthy and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real collusion in the 2016 election was not between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. It was between the Clinton campaign and the Obama administration. The media–Democrat “collusion narrative,” which paints Donald Trump as cat’s paw of Russia, is a studiously crafted illusion. Despite Clinton’s commanding lead in the polls, hyper-partisan intelligence officials decided they needed an “insurance policy” against a Trump presidency. Thus was born the collusion narrative, built on an anonymously sourced “dossier,” secretly underwritten by the Clinton campaign and compiled by a former British spy. Though acknowledged to be “salacious and unverified” at the FBI’s highest level, the dossier was used to build a counterintelligence investigation against Trump’s campaign. Miraculously, Trump won anyway. But his political opponents refused to accept the voters’ decision. Their collusion narrative was now peddled relentlessly by political operatives, intelligence agents, Justice Department officials, and media ideologues—the vanguard of the “Trump Resistance.” Through secret surveillance, high-level intelligence leaking, and tireless news coverage, the public was led to believe that Trump conspired with Russia to steal the election. Not one to sit passively through an onslaught, President Trump fought back in his tumultuous way. Matters came to a head when he fired his FBI director, who had given explosive House testimony suggesting the president was a criminal suspect, despite privately assuring Trump otherwise. The resulting firestorm of partisan protest cowed the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel, whose seemingly limitless investigation bedeviled the administration for two years. Yet as months passed, concrete evidence of collusion failed to materialize. Was the collusion narrative an elaborate fraud? And if so, choreographed by whom? Against media–Democrat caterwauling, a doughty group of lawmakers forced a shift in the spotlight from Trump to his investigators and accusers. This has exposed the depth of politicization within American law-enforcement and intelligence agencies. It is now clear that the institutions on which our nation depends for objective policing and clear-eyed analysis injected themselves scandalously into the divisive politics of the 2016 election. They failed to forge a new Clinton administration. Will they succeed in bringing down President Trump?

Book excerpt: In this searing exposéformer Wall Street insider Nomi Prins shows how the 2007-2008 financial crisis turbo-boosted the influence of central bankers and triggered a massive shift in the world order. Central banks and international institutions like the IMF have overstepped their traditional mandates by directing the flow of epic sums of fabricated money without any checks or balances. Meanwhile, the open door between private and central banking has ensured endless opportunities for market manipulation and asset bubbles -- with government support. Through on-the-ground reporting, Prins reveals how five regions and their central banks reshaped economics and geopolitics. She discloses how Mexico navigated its relationship with the US while striving for independence and how Brazil led the BRICS countries to challenge the US dollar's hegemony. She explains how China's retaliation against the Fed's supremacy is aiding its ongoing ascent as a global superpower and how Japan is negotiating the power shift from the West to the East. And she illustrates how the European response to the financial crisis fueled instability that manifests itself in everything from rising populism to the shocking Brexit vote. Packed with tantalizing details about the elite players orchestrating the world economy -- from Janet Yellen and Mario Draghi to Ben Bernanke and Christine Lagarde -- Collusion takes the reader inside the most discreet conversations at exclusive retreats like Jackson Hole and Davos. A work of meticulous reporting and bracing analysis, Collusion will change the way we understand the new world of international finance.

The book is divided into the types of circumstance under which collisions occur.

Book Collision Or Collusion The Congress the President and the Ambiguity of War Powers

Download or read book Collision Or Collusion The Congress the President and the Ambiguity of War Powers written by William Montgomery Raymond (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I examine the interactions between a president and members of Congress during foreign policy crises involving the use of American forces and I address the questions: Why do members of Congress continually assert their constitutional rights on war powers yet acquiesce to executive encroachment of those same rights? Why do presidents and members of Congress perpetuate the ambiguity about war powers? To explore the impact of the War Powers Resolution (WPR) on executive-congressional relations, I compare two U.S. interventions that occurred before its passage (Lebanon, 1958 and Dominican Republic, 1965) to two that occurred after (Mayaguez, 1975 and Grenada 1983). I also examine four "non-interventions"--Dien Bien Phu (1954), Pueblo (1968), Angola (1975), and Nicaragua (1980s)--to consider whether the WPR has had a restraining influence on presidents and to identify those factors in a crisis that distinguish an intervention from a non-intervention.

Book Collision and Collusion

Download or read book Collision and Collusion written by Nail Kashaev and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present dissertation consists of three essays on Econometrics of discrete outcome models. The first essay analyses possibility of discriminating between several solution concepts in a general class of semiparametric finite games with complete information based on observed data on outcomes and characteristics of agents. I find conditions under which it is possible to identify whether actual behavior of agents is consistent with a given solution concept. I propose different applications for my general methodology. For example, I can identify whether and how often firms play Nash equilibria (NE) in an entry game, which equilibria are more likely to be selected, and whether profit functions are private information or common knowledge. I also identify whether choices are sequential or simultaneous. The second essay is a logical continuation of the first one. I focus on entry games with complete information and provide a statistical tool to test for the NE solution concept. I develop a sieve likelihood ratio type procedure to test whether the NE assumption can rationalize the data on outcomes and payoff shifters in semiparametric entry games with second-order rational firms. I allow agents to play mixed strategy NE in the regions of NE multiplicity. I do not impose parametric restrictions on the way firms randomize between different equilibria. The testing procedure does not assume that the model is point identified. I apply the proposed procedure to the data on entry and exit decisions of small grocery stores in rural areas in the USA. In the third essay I address the issue of data availability in parametric binary outcome models. In particular, I consider environments where the researcher only observes the data that correspond to a particular outcome (pure choice-based data) and has some auxiliary information about the distribution of the explanatory variables. I propose a Generalized Method of Moments type procedure to estimate parametric binary models with pure choice-based data when auxiliary information on distribution of explanatory variables is available. As an empirical application of my procedure, I estimate the probability of a two-car collision based on the data on all police reported accidents in Seattle from 2002-2011.

Book excerpt: With this book Immanuel Velikovsky first presented the revolutionary results of his 10-year-long interdisciplinary research to the public, founded modern catastrophism - based on eyewitness reports by our ancestors - shook the doctrine of uniformity of geology as well as Darwin's theory of evolution, put our view of the history of our solar system, of the Earth and of humanity on a completely new basis - and caused an uproar that is still going on today. Worlds in Collision - written in a brilliant, easily understandable and entertaining style and full to the brim with precise information - can be considered one of the most important and most challenging books in the history of science. Not without reason was this book found open on Einstein's desk after his death. For all those who have ever wondered about the evolution of the earth, the history of mankind, traditions, religions, mythology or just the world as it is today, Worlds in Collision is an absolute MUST-READ!
