The particular developmental issues of the age group and how the issues may interact with problems such as grief, perfectionism, disturbed self-esteem, vocational indecision and psychosomatic symptoms are considered in light of diagnosis and methods of treatment. The final section presents a large scale study on the specific factors of the counseling/psychotherapy process found to be most successful with specific categories of students when differences of sex and age were examined.

Book Demystifying Psychotherapy

Download or read book Demystifying Psychotherapy written by Allison M. Silvers (Psy.D. candidate at the University of Hartford) and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental health concerns have become a pressing concern on college campuses. More and more individuals are attending college in today’s society. College students are, however, a vulnerable population and increasing rates of serious psychological problems within this population have been noted (Erdur-Baker, Aberson, Barrow, & Draper, 2006; Parcover, Mays, & McCarthy, 2015; Yorgason, Linville, & Zitzman, 2008). In spite of the increasing rates of mental health concerns on campuses, utilization of psychotherapy as treatment for mental health concerns remains low (Gallagher, 2014; Ketchen Lipson, Gaddis, Heinze, Beck, & Eisenberg, 2015; Yorgason et al., 2008). If left untreated, there are several serious implications for college students struggling with mental health concerns. These consequences include a decreased sense of well-being and academic concerns, such as lower grade point averages (Choi, Buskey, & Johnson, 2010; Douce & Keeling, 2014; National Alliance on Mental Illness [NAMI], 2015). Students with untreated mental illnesses are also more likely to drop out of school and have a less satisfying college experience (Salzer, 2012). There are several barriers prohibiting students from accessing professional care for mental health problems. These include stigma of mental illness (Miranda, Soffer, Polanco-Roman, Wheeler, & Moore, 2015; NAMI, 2012; Yorgason et al., 2008) and lack of mental health literacy (Miranda et al., 2015; NAMI, 2012; Nordberg, Hayes, McAleavey, Castonguay, & Locke, 2013; Yorgason et al., 2008). It is important to reduce and eliminate these barriers to treatment on college campuses in order to improve access to mental health care. Outreach activities on college campuses can assist in reducing stigma and increasing knowledge regarding psychotherapy as treatment for mental health concerns (NAMI, 2012). What is lacking is efficient, easy to implement outreach that informs students, faculty, and staff about mental health, the purpose of psychotherapy, and how to access counseling services. The goal of this dissertation is to create an outreach manual and materials to be utilized by college counseling centers. Hopefully, the outreach program will provide all members of the campus community with an increased awareness of mental health concerns and psychotherapy as an effective treatment.

Book Research in Psychotherapy

Download or read book Research in Psychotherapy written by Robin Fox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in Psychotherapy is a comprehensive synthesis and assessment of the psychotherapeutic research literature for the use of both researchers and those in clinical practice. It is designed as a general reference work, an instruction guide, and a source of information about specific aspects and problems of research. The book consists of three parts. Part 1 discusses principles and methods of research as they are applied to psychotherapy. It provides general background material and principles to help non-researchers appreciate some of the important problems that are encountered. In Part 2, existing research on the effects of psychotherapy and the determinants and correlates of outcome are clustered and reviewed. Chapters 4 to 7 are concerned strictly with a review and appraisal of controlled studies that were designed to evaluate the effects of psychotherapy. Chapters 8 to 13 deal with a large body of research on various factors associated with therapeutic outcome--method, style, and technique variables; patient, therapist, and time variables. Part 3 is concerned with research on aspects of the therapeutic process and on the effect of many of these same variables on the therapeutic interchange as distinct from the outcome of therapy. Also discussed is research on various therapeutic phenomena and conditions about which so much has been written and so little really known. Research in Psychotherapy was written in the conviction that clinical practice should be influenced by research and that rigorous research that meets acceptable experimental standards can be done on the field of psychotherapy.
