Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, I examined the number of university students that reported having received any form of sex education prior to attending college, what types of programs they participated in, and whether they believed their sex education program prepared them for sexual experiences they encountered while at college. Students were asked to rate their knowledge of various topics associated with sexuality and reproductive health. Students were also asked to identify the sources of information and support that have contributed most to their knowledge about sex and sexuality. To understand the extent to which past sex education experiences may be associated with current sex education participation, the study also investigated students' knowledge of and participation in sex education on their college campus. If students were aware of sex education programming on their college campus, they were asked to identify what department or program offered the programming.

Book excerpt: This investigation focuses on sources of, and satisfaction with, sexuality education, relative importance of significant others (e.g., parents, religious leaders) in influencing the acceptance of sexuality information, and characteristics that give significant others authority among adolescents. General and sex-related rapport are also investigated. New instruments to measure the influence of significant others on learning sexuality information, and two rapport scales for religious leaders are reported. Data were collected from 177 college students through a questionnaire. Respondent perceived, actual, and current sources of sexuality education are reported and compared. Sexuality education satisfaction was assessed to determine whether perceived and actual sources of sexuality education influenced level of satisfaction. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated mothers as the most influential significant other in comparison to fathers and religious leaders. Regression analyses based on four types of authority and two types of rapport determined characteristics, which influence adolescent healthy sexual practices and interpersonal relationships.

Book AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE COLLEGE STUDENTS PERCEPTIONS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Download or read book AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE COLLEGE STUDENTS PERCEPTIONS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE written by SHONDRIKA MERRITT and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dialogue around violence against women has gone from a private matter to a national audience, primarily due to the sexual violence on college campuses and a recognition that it is part of a comprehensive system of power that affects all women. Researchers have shown that sexual violence is a significant issue on college campuses and there are various demonstrations of how colleges and universities have found ways to support individuals who report these interactions. Although women of all races, ethnicities, and cultures are affected by sexual violence, how it is experienced racially and culturally is unique. African American women's experiences are often missing from narratives because of the lack of understanding of intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1991) an acknowledgment of the historical and ongoing oppression that they experience in both their race and gender identity. This understanding is essential because several studies show that African American women are at high risk of experiencing sexual violence (Cantor, et al., 2015) and are the least likely to disclose, not only on college campuses but in general. Although universities are making great strides to improve their support for students experiencing sexual violence, the area that continues to lack research and data explores how different cultures, specifically the African American culture, respond to and address issues of sexual violence. Given the lack of empirical information, how can African American women be supported and educated around the topic of sexual violence? With the increased sexual violence occurring on a college campus and researchers demonstrating that African American women are at higher risk of sexual assault and are the least likely to disclose their sexual violation, it is crucial to dissect the African American female college students' perspective. This qualitative study engaged participants in a semi-structured interview to understand how African American undergraduate women perceive sexual violence and how history has influenced their perception. There were six major themes identified from the study that helped provide insight into the four research questions. The findings reveal that participants in this research understand and can apply a foundational definition of sexual violence, as demonstrated through the use of the vignette method. The notion that African American women's silence regarding sexual violence is due to a lack of awareness and education is unlikely; however, inappropriate sex education and sex-role socialization did influence disclosure patterns. The women in the study demonstrated that African American culture, history, and sex-role socialization influenced African American women's' perceptions of sexual violence, which resulted in barriers to help-seeking, and disclosure patterns about sexual violence. Findings revealed that there are complexities of African American women's perceptions of sexual violence. The lack of intersectionality within messaging and educational efforts is active contributions to their silence. There were three primary recommendations for practice and policy and two primary recommendations for theory and research. These recommendations focus on communicating care and concern, including African American women's voices in decision-making processes, and understanding and honoring African American women's experiences concerning sexual violence practices. The recommendations for practice and policy are: (a.) Institutional response and care, (b.) Education and awareness, and (c.) Adopting a social justice paradigm for sexual violence; future research recommendations are (a.) peer support and research and (b.) African American women's sexual self-acceptance. This study's findings provide insight into African American undergraduate women's perceptions of sexual violence and its influence on help-seeking and disclosure patterns. It also provided a focused lens on how intersectionality assists African American women in navigating environments that have not traditionally included them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three decades into the HIV pandemic, the goals remain clear: reduce the number of infections, improve the health outcomes of those who are infected, and eliminate disparities in care. And one observation continues to gain credence: families are a powerful resource in preventing, adapting to, and coping with HIV. Recognizing their complex role as educators, mentors, and caregivers, Family and HIV/AIDS assembles a wealth of findings from successful prevention and intervention strategies and provides models for translating evidence into effective real-world practice. Chapters spotlight the differing roles of mothers and fathers in prevention efforts, clarify the need for family/community collaborations, and examine core issues of culture, ethnicity, gender, and diagnosis (e.g., minority families, adolescents with psychological disorders). Throughout, risk reduction and health promotion are shown as a viable public health strategy A reference with considerable utility across the health, mental health, and related disciplines,Family and HIV/AIDS will be a go-to resource for practitioners working with families, researchers studying at-risk populations, administrators seeking to create new (or evaluate existing)prevention and care programs, and policymakers involved in funding such programs.

Book They Were Trying to Scare Us

Book excerpt: In order to gain an understanding of how students perceive the messages they receive in their school-based sex education courses, it is imperative to go to the source and talk with students who have recently taken these courses. This paper explores the curricula, messaging, and environments of middle and high school sex education courses in Ohio through twenty in-depth interviews with undergraduate college students. Three main themes emerge from the data: (1) sex negativity in the messages being communicated to students, (2) unique experiences of LGBTQ+ students, and (3) missing pieces in the curricula that students must fill in on their own. Additionally, fear, shame, and stereotype messaging were common in respondents' courses, suggesting a culture of sex negativity for developing adolescents. This reality was particularly acute for LGBTQ+ students in the sample. Unable to glean information about sex from the formal curriculum, student respondents sought out other sources of knowledge, such as social media or friends. School-based sex education was found to impact the cultural norms of sex/sexuality which has an effect on students' interpersonal and intrapsychic sexual scripts. The conclusion discusses the implications of students' experiences and how policy change, particularly in Ohio, can move toward a more inclusive, sex positive, and thorough school-based sex education for the next generation of students and beyond.

Book Opinions of South Mississippi College Students Regarding Adolescent Sex Education

Download or read book Opinions of South Mississippi College Students Regarding Adolescent Sex Education written by Mary Kathryn Nobles and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teen pregnancy and rates of sexually transmitted disease (STD) transmission among teenage Mississippians are disproportionally higher than the national average. These high rates are partially attributed to poor adolescent sex education programs in Mississippi (MS) schools. MS has a long history of inadequate sex education programs; until recently, sex education was not a required component of the curriculum. Most MS public schools teach abstinence-only education, which has been shown to be less effective than comprehensive programs. Most Mississippians probably assume that MS public schools teach the sex education programs of which the majority of Mississippians are in favor. A review of literature indicated that this was not the case in other areas across the country. To determine if the same held true for MS, a survey was completed (N=297) to determine South MS college students' opinions and preferences for adolescent sex education, as college students are most likely to be the next generation of parents and policymakers. Results suggested that an overwhelming majority of respondents were in favor of comprehensive sex education (92.9%, n=261), including topics on the transmission, symptoms and treatment of STDs (97.2% in favor, n=242) and how to prevent pregnancy through birth control pills, condoms, and natural family planning (92.8% in favor, n=231). This study implies that there is a discrepancy between preferred methods of sex education and actual methods of sex education in MS. This research can be used to direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of sex education programs that are relevant to the needs of Mississippians. Developing sound sex education programs can minimize the negative health, psychosocial, and economic effects that teenage sexual activity can have. --Page iv.

This book was released on 2022-06-24 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, gaps in college opportunities have contributed to diminished social mobility and are influenced by disparities in collegiate experiences. An integral part of the mission of colleges and universities is to advance student achievement and prepare students for a global society by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access. In order to provide equal educational opportunities, further study on the best practices to create a diverse and welcoming campus community for all faculty and students is required. The Handbook of Research on Opening Pathways for Marginalized Individuals in Higher Education examines specific case studies and stories from the field, analyzes the research breadth for supporting the creation of policies to foster equitable educational access, and studies higher education inclusive policies that promote leadership, social justice, and the health and well-being of faculty and students. The book also helps to alleviate and remedy issues of “historical privilege” with a lens on diversity and support through the creation of inclusive communities of equitable educational access. Covering a range of topics such as social justice, accessibility, and healthy student interactions, this reference work is ideal for academicians, researchers, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.
