Book excerpt: For a free 30-day online trial to this title, visit www.sagepub.com/freetrial In many ways, the two fields of victimology and crime prevention have developed along parallel yet separate paths, and the literature on both has been scattered across disciplines as varied as sociology, law and criminology, public health and medicine, political science and public policy, economics, psychology and human services, and others. The Encyclopedia of Victimology and Crime Prevention brings together in one authoritative resource the dispersed information and knowledge on both victimology and crime prevention. With nearly 375 entries, this two-volume set moves victimology and crime prevention one step further into recognized scholarly fields whose research informs practice and whose practice informs research. Book Youth Violence

    Book Details:
  • Author : I. M. Rachia
  • Publisher : Nova Publishers
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9781560727132
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Youth Violence written by I. M. Rachia and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography comprises a selection of Library of Congress catalog records for some 1,500 books, periodicals, and websites related to youth violence. Anyone wanting such a bibliography could probably compile it from the Library of Congress web site, and the deficiencies in conception and design of this "product" defy understanding. A brief preface sounds an alarm--"...no one should be surprised that youth violence lurks behind every school house door"--but sets forth no criteria for selection of citations (no indication of time frame, purpose, or audience). Entries are arranged alphabetically by title within chapters on school violence, guns and youth, gangs, campus violence, dating and violence, and periodicals and Web sites. Unforgivably primitive alphabetic sorting puts all titles beginning with The together (the same with other articles); and, in addition, those titles are indexed together! Though the title indicates the presence of "abstracts," there are none except the summaries supplied by Library of Congress for juvenile titles (of which there are many). Cross-referencing and indexing (except by title) are absent. The compiler's credentials, motivation, and orientation are not cited. Furthermore, with better design, the contents would have consumed half the number of pages, and a few typeface variations would have eased scanning. Book Campus Crime

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bonnie S. Fisher
  • Publisher : Charles C Thomas Publisher
  • Release : 2022-09-19
  • ISBN : 039809389X
  • Pages : 389 pages

Download or read book Campus Crime written by Bonnie S. Fisher and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Campus Crime shares with readers the advancements that have been made in understanding campus crime. Across the three sections of the book, chapters review changes while also addressing current – and even future – crime and security issues confronting institutions of higher education. Some of these chapters address long-standing topics such as the sexual victimization of college women and the role of campus police departments in securing IHEs. Other chapters address new issues in campus crime such as drugging victimization, concealed carrying of firearms on campus, and “technology-based” security issues such as the challenges posed by cybercriminals, as well as activities like cyberstalking and identity theft that involve campus community members both as victims and offenders. Although there are new topics and contributors to this edition, the previously covered chapters have been updated as well. The authors have brought together contributors who could provide both a current picture and critical analysis of issues concerning the legal, social, security, and policy contexts of campus crime. The chapters review topics at hand, offer substantive, critical analyses, thought-provoking discussion, and raise relevant policy issues, questions, and answers. This fourth edition combines seasoned campus crime experts with those relatively new to the study of campus crime who represent the next generation of scholars and practitioners in the field and bring with them the passion that comes with beginning to address what they see as the issues, explanations, solutions for, and responses to campus crime.

  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Party School written by Karen G. Weiss and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2013 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the basis of extensive on-site research, Karen G. Weiss offers a case study of crime victimization at an American "party school" that reverberates beyond a single campus. She argues that today's party school--usually a large public university with a big sports program and an active Greek life--represents a unique environment that nurtures and rewards extreme drinking, which in turn increases the risks of victimization and normalizes bad behavior of students who are intoxicated. Weiss shows why so many students voluntarily place themselves at risk, why so few crimes are reported to police, and why victims often shrug off their injuries and other negative consequences as the acceptable cost of admission to a party.

The heightened recognition of designing as a social process has stimulated interest in collaborative design. Within this volume different motivations for, conceptions of, and findings about collaborative design are addressed in 50 contributions by different research groups. Structured into 6 sections according to the main fields of interest, it provides a survey of the state of scientifically based knowledge and trends emerging from collaborative design research and their implications for a wide range of domains.
