Book College Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book College Composition Classic Reprint written by Charles Sears Baldwin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Composition As the Greeks thus distinguished by its method a speech of Demosthenes from a drama of Sophocles, we may distin guish not only Bacon's essays from Shakspere's plays, but The Imitation of Christ from Pilgrim's Progress, or a speech on prison reform from Dickens's Little Dorrit. For the two fold division underlies a great variety of literary forms. It has no reference to details, as of prose or verse. Scott's stories, whether in prose or in verse, all alike come under the second head. Except in a few essays, Scott was always a writer of images. Indeed, the classification is not prima rily of literary forms, but rather 'of literary method, of com position in the most general sense. In this broad sense, most prose writing and speaking may be classified either as discussion or as story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English Composition This book is designed for grammar schools and the lower classes in high schools. It may also be profitably used in ungraded schools, and for the private study of those who are desirous of personal improvement in the art of writing. It is complete in its treatment of the practical features that underlie the art of composition. To put complete and connected thoughts upon paper should not be more difficult than to express such thoughts orally. Each form of expression has its difficulties and its advantages. Training in oral speech precedes that in written speech, and, from our greater familiarity with the oral form of expression, it seems the more natural. There is much to be gained, however, from the use of the pen. If the writer fails. To express his thoughts clearly at first, he can change and improve what has been written. The painstaking construction of one's own forms of expression is a chief condition of improvement. A book designed to teach the art of writing must furnish both instruction as to the principles on which good writing is based and exercises adapted to training in the art of speaking and writing. Book English Composition and Style

Download or read book English Composition and Style written by William T. Brewster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Composition and Style: A Handbook for College Students A general discussion which, among other things, speaks of the purpose and the method of this book, will be found in the accompanying introduction. Since this is intended chiefly for teachers, it is separate from the rest of the book. The latter is for the student, working preferably under direction, and it contains accounts of the theory of writing and exercises for practice. The more important parts are Chapters V-VII, of Part I, Chapters II-IV of Part II, and Chapters II-V of Part III, largely because they give more opportunity for practice. But they cannot wholly be understood without the other chapters. Several citations, notably those on pages ii6-139, I have introduced without the usual form of reference, deeming it best for students to come to some opinion without knowing the authorship. My indebtedness to the many writers of rhetorics from the days of Aristotle to our own immediate year is manifest Many of these are specifically mentioned in foot-notes, but I should also like especially to name, as books that have been most useful to me, the late Adams Sherman Hill's The Principles of Rhetoric, Professor Barrett Wendell's English Com position, the late Hammond Lamont's English Composition, Professor George P.Baker's The Principles of Argumentation, and Professor Ashley H. Thomdike's The Elements of Rhetoric and Composition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical English Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical English Composition Classic Reprint written by Carolyn M. Gerrish and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Practical Course in English Composition Classic Reprint written by Alphonso G. Newcomer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Course in English Composition Reading up beforehand is by no means advised in every case. And yet there seems to be little warrant for the objections to this practice sometimes advanced of late. The early work of nearly every great writer shows clearly that he began by' conscious, if not deliber ate, imitation. Still, it will be apparent from even a hasty glance into this book that style is not considered the all-important thing it is the subject-matter of models and references that has in most cases led to their selection, even translations being admitted. After all else is done, one thing remains for the teacher the criticism of the pupil's work.' There fore, mechanical faults and minor individual vices of style are not discussed herein. They are as numerous and as diverse as are the individual writers. Often, too, they are not matters of absolute right or wrong. Many adventitious considerations, which cannot be foreseen here, must go to settle the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Greek Composition for Colleges

Download or read book Greek Composition for Colleges written by Augustus Taber Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Composition for Colleges: With Extracts for Sight-Translation This book has grown out of a need in my own freshman classes of a book that would supply material for work in Greek Composition adapted to college use. To supply the material is its main purpose; as to its use complete freedom is left to the individual teacher. That the reading and the writing of Greek should go hand in hand is a view now, I think, universally held; and this end is best attained if the English exercises are based upon the text of some Greek author. I have, from firm conviction of the wisdom of the course, used a number of Greek authors, and have therefore printed the Greek. There is no one author universally read during the freshman year, so that it could be assumed that the Greek text would already be in the hands of the students, and, if there were, I should none the less have chosen the present course. For it seems to me better that the exercises should not all be based upon the text of a single author, however interesting and important that author might be. Monotony is thus avoided, the student's interest is increased - a matter of prime importance - and at the same time he is introduced to a broader field. The bulk of the book consists, naturally, of extracts from the historians, and the arrangement is roughly chronological, although, for obvious reasons, Xenophon precedes Thucydides and Herodotus has been put last. Book Composition Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Composition Literature Classic Reprint written by Fred Newton Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition-Literature This book, now entirely rewritten and greatly enlarged, embodies all those features of former editions of the Composition-Rhetoric and Composition-Literature which in class-room use have been found most successful and most attractive. Of these features the following are perhaps the most important: - Composition is regarded as a social act, and the student is therefore constantly led to think of himself as writing or speaking for a specified audience. Thus not mere expression but communication as well is made the business of composition. The simple fundamental principles that underlie alike composition, rhetoric, and literature are discovered inductively by the study of numerous selections, and when discovered are at once applied in the student's practice. The aim is to keep the student's powers of construction and criticism in proper adjustment. While his chief purpose is to produce something readable, interesting, and perhaps valuable, he is led to consider questions of form at the same time. The effect of such criticism by the text, if it is properly supplemented by the teacher's suggestions, is to increase in each student the power and the will to criticise his own writings before giving them any form of publication. Experience having proved that concentration on a smaller unit than the essay and a larger unit than the sentence is conducive to the best results, attention is drawn first to the paragraph. Book College Life Its Conditions and Problems

Download or read book College Life Its Conditions and Problems written by Maurice G. Fulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Life, Its Conditions and Problems: A Selection of Essays for Use in College Writing Courses The remainder of the book deals with the student interests outside of the curriculum, such as general reading, recreation and athletics, college spirit, college morals, student government, etc. The second value that this material has for the course in English composition is that it enables the instructor to make the course incite to thinking and to intellectual expansion. In the composition course it seems wise to emphasize ideas, rather than literary models or set exercises, by allowing the student to encounter fresh and stimulating thoughts, which one may adopt and apply to one's own experience, or which one may combat or modify in accordance with individual conviction. To throw the emphasis upon formal matters is unwise and is an illustration of what Huxley has described as making the student practice the use of knife, fork, and spoon without giving him a particle of meat. But if the student is provided before he writes with the materials of thought in the form of some reading which, firmly thought out and clearly expressed, stimulates to thinking, the ways and means of clear expression assume new significance to him. The field of college life offers many inviting subjects for writing and oral discussion which are well within the comprehension and experience of the student. The selections in this book are therefore intended as a body of stimulating material. Though suggestiveness in point of ideas has been the main criterion of choice, these selections will serve well also as models of clear, direct, and incisive modern English. The selections have not been brought together for the purpose of representing the different types of discourse, but simply to set the student to the general task of correct and effective writing. It so happens, however, that these selections will readily serve as a basis for the expository and argumentative writing which, in most colleges, is the fundamental part of the first-year course in writing. Book The Essentials of English Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Essentials of English Composition Classic Reprint written by James Weber Linn and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of English Composition Of making text-books on English Composition there is no end. The author of the work here offered consulted more than fifty, and might doubtless have consulted as many more. Yet he presents no apology for adding to the list. Some are too complicated to be helpful; others too dogmatic to be trustworthy; still others are highly valuable only as works of reference. Most are addressed either to the elementary student, to the proficient, or to the teacher. Diligent search throughout fourteen years' experience in teaching college freshmen classes has brought to the present author's notice not one book which meets the requirements of the students whom year after year he has faced. They ought not, perhaps, to need review of elementary details, but they do need it. They ought, perhaps, to be able to appreciate the finer matters of style, but they are not. This book seeks to give, in small compass, the information and direction which the average boy or girl of seventeen or eighteen, who has had the average training in composition in the grades and the high schools, needs to supplement and enliven his or her ability to write clear English. It is written as much to interest as to insist, as much to stimulate as to command. It gives few rules, and those simple; many suggestions, and those, it is hoped, clear. If it contains one sentence that needs explanation by a teacher, the author has so far failed of his intention.
